Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS STONE, OF OARBONDALE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, 'WIL- LIAM SCURLOCK, AND NELSON W. GRAHAM, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT |.N enviar-vimEnel-iEs.l
Specification forming part of Letters VPatent No. 133,902, dated December 10,1872.
To all whom t may concerm.
Be it known that I, THOMAS STONE, of Oary bondale, in the county of Jackson and State ot' Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Pipe-.Wi-encli, of which the iollowing is a specilication:
Figure 1 is a side view of 'my iluprovedpipewrench. Fig. 2 is a detail cross-section of the saine 'taken through the line x m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts. T Y
M y invention has for its object to furnish an improved pipe-Wrench, simple in Construction, convenient in use. and effective in operation, being,` readily adj us-ted to various-sized pipes, and holding the pipe iirnily; land it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts ot' the wrench, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the stationary jaw, which is made slightlyconcave or curved upon its face, and hnsteeth formed upon `its face, as shown in Fig. 1. B is the movable jaw, the face of which is curved outward or made. slightly convex. :is shown in Fig'. 1, to cause it to clamp` the pipe more iirxnly when in use as power is applied toit. The base oi' the movable jaw B is slot-ted, ns' shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to receive and slide upon thev shank C of the stationarj,Y jaw A when adjusting the wrench for di'erent-sized pipes. The slot in the movable jaw B, through which the shank or stein C passes, is made longerthan the breadth ofthe shank G, as shown in Fig. 2, and in dotted lines in Fig. 1, to allow the said jaw to play upon the said shank to tighten or loosen the Vgrasp ofthe Wrench upon the pipe when using the wrench. Upon the outer side ofthe movable jaw B is formed a short arm, D, the end of which is pivoted o'r hinged to the end of the vscrew E, which passes through a 4guide or keeper, F, formed upon or attached to the hand-piece G ofthe wrench. Upon the screw E is placed a milled nut, H, which enters a 'notch in the. edge of the stem or shank C, so that when the said nut is turned the screw E, and with it the movablejaw B, may be moved back and forth to adjust it to different-sized pipes. To the hinged end ot' the screw E'is attached or upon it is formed zt collar or keeper, I, through which the stein or shank C passes, to hold the end of the said screw E close up to and canse it to move back and forth parallel with' the stem C.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 'Patent- The within-described pipe-wrench, consisting ot' the handle G, keeper F, stem C, curved jaw A, slotted and curved jawpiece B, hinged arm D, keeper I, screw E, and nut H, al1 as shown vand set forth. Y
THOMAS STONE. Witnesses:
