INVENT DR A. F Frd ussard.
20 BY v ATTORNEY nnrrnn PATENT O E ALBERT F. FRO'USSARD, OF .ST; LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SHOE-POUNDING MACHINE.
Application filed April 16,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. FRoUssaRD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, United States of America, have invented a certain new and useful Shoe- Pounding Machine, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formin part of this specification.
My invention relates to a shoe pounding machine such as is used for forming the soles of shoes and one object of my invention is to provide a machine in which the hammer will be actuated in a straight line and in which the mechanism will be as simple and compact as possible. Another ob ect of my invention is to provide means for ad usting the angle of the shoe hammer so as to apply the blows of the hammer most effectively to the sole of the shoe.
In the accompanying drawings which illustratev one form of shoe pounding machine made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 is a front elevation, Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 11 of Fig. 3.
5 indicates a standard provided with a table 6 to which are secured a pair of bearings 7 Journaled in the bearings 7 is a shaft 8 carrying a loose pulley 9 and a tight pulley 10 for driving the said shaft. The forward end of the shaft 8 is provided with a stud 11 on which a cam 12 isremovably secured by means of a nut 13. In the drawings, the cam 12 is shown as provided with three cam faces. The number of cam faces, however, may be varied to vary the rapidity with which the hammer is actuated. Secured to the table 6 at right angles to the bearings 7 is a bearing 15 in which is slidingly mounted a rod 16 provided on its rear end with a rounded face 17 adapted to coact with the cam faces on the cam 12. The rod 16 is held in position by means of a pin 18 passing through a slot 19 in the said rod. 20 is an arm which is secured to the Specification of Letters Patent.

bar 16 by means of a pin 21. This arm 20 carries an adjusting screw 22 adapted to strike against a lug 23 carried on the bearing 15 and locked in position by means of a lock nut 24:.
27 is a shoe hammer pivotally secured to the bar'16 by means of a bolt 28 and adapted to be locked in its various angular positions by means of a nut 29 on the said bolt 28. Formed in the shoe hammer 27 is a recess 30 to receive the flame for heating the working face 31 of the'hammer. The heating is accomplished by means of a Bunsen burner 32 vertically adjustable in an arm 33 by means of a set screw 34. The arm 33 is pivotally secured to a lug 35 upon the table 6 by means of a wing nut 36 so that the arm 33 may be adjusted to accommodate the burner to the varying positions of the shoe hammer 27.
In using my machine, the sole of the shoe to be shaped is held against the face 31 of the shoe hammer, the force of the blows being regulated by the pressure of the shoe against the shoe hammer. As the shoe hammer is actuated in a straight line the blows are most effectively applied to the sole and the angular position of the hammer may be varied so as to accommodate different positions of the shoe. The amount of movement imparted to the hammer may be varied by moving the adjusting screw 32.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1.' In a shoe pounding machine, the combination with a rotary member, of a cam carried by said rotary member, a sliding member actuated from said cam, and a shoe hammer adjustably pivoted to said sliding member to swing in a vertical plane parallel to the line of travel of the sliding member.
2. In a shoe pounding machine, the combination with a rotary member, of a cam carried by said rotary member, a sliding member actuated from said cam, a shoe hammer pivotally carried by said sliding heating device for the shoe hammer carried by said arm.
3. In a shoe pounding machine, the combination with a rotary member, of a cam 5 carried by said rotary member, a sliding member actuated from said cam, a shoe hammer adjustably carried by said sliding member, a gas jet pivotally mounted to cooperate With said shoe hammer, means for adjusting said jet on its pivot, and means 10 for adjusting said jet longitudinally.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal.
