CHARLES G. OVERMYER, OF-HARTFORD CIT-Y, INDIANA, "ASSIGNOROF ONE-HALF TO SAMUEL J. FARRELL,OF HARTFORD CITY, INDIANA.
' GASTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1920.
- Application filed July 2, 1919. Serial N0.-308,163.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHA'RLns 'Gr. OVER- MYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford City, in the county of Blackford and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Caster, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvement in furniture slides or shoes to be used in connection with furniture having hollow legs, in place of the ordinary caster or roller now 1n common use.
The principal object of this invention is the provision of securing means for the slide whereby the same may be rigidly but detachably held within its socket in the leg.
A further object of the invention is to provide a securing means separate and independent of the slide, to permit of replacement of the securing means when the same becomes broken or damaged.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the detail of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1. is a sectional view showing a table leg with the preferred form of my slide secured thereto.
Fig. 2. is a side elevational View of a slide with the securing means attached.
Fig. 3. is a detail view of the securing means.
Fig. 4. is a horizontal sectional view of a slide, with a modified form of securing means attached.
Fig. 5. is a side elevational view of the modified form of slide, and
Fig. 6. is a detail view of the securing means employed with the modified form.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, 5 indicates the shank or body of the slide, which is constructed of suitable material, but preferably glass.
The shank 5 is provided at one end with a head, or surface engaging portion 6,
which as shown has rounded corners 7 to facilitate the sliding oftthe caster over the surface on which the same is supported.
As shown the upper portion of the head 6 is provided with a cup 7 for the reception of powder or liquid destructive to insect life. Adjacent the upper edge of the shank 5, is provided a radial groove 8, said radial groove being in communication with the vertical groove 9, which grooves form seats for the securing means to be hereinafter more fully described.
The securing means which is fitted in the grooves 8 and 9, includes the curved body 11, one end thereof terminating in a depending, longitudinally curved arm 12, the extreme end 13 of said arm 12 being curved outwardly to permit the same to move freely over the base of groove in which the same is supported.
In the modified form of my invention, I have shown a slide including a shank 14 having a head 15 which also has curved edges 16 to permit of easy sliding. In this form the shank 14 is provided with a radial groove 18 adjacent its upper edge, which groove, being in communication with the vertical groove 19 formed in the side walls of the shank 14, said grooves forming seats for the modified form of securing means.
The modified form of securing means, shown by Fig. 6 of the drawing is formed of resilient wire and includes the curved body 20, and integral longitudinally bowed leg portions 21, terminating in outwardly curved portions 22.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when. the securing means is in position on the shank 14c of the slide, the bowed or curved portions 21 of the leg portions eX- tend beyond the periphery of the shank 14, to grip the walls of the socket in which the slide is positioned.
on one end of the shank, and resilient means positioned in the grooves for securing the slide within a socket.
2. In combination with a socket, a furniture slide including a shank having a radial groove adjacent one of its ends, longitudinal grooves communicating with the radial groove, and a securing means including resilient legs, positioned in the grooves, for frictionally engaging the walls of the socket, and a head on one end of the shank.
3. In a furniture slide shoe, shank having grooves formed therein, a surface engaging head on one end of the shank, se- 7 curing means including a curved body por tion, and depending curved resilient leg portions the lower ends of the leg portions being curved to provide groove engaging portions, and said securing means being positioned in the grooves of the shank.
In testimony'that I claim the foregoing -as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the
