Specification of Iiettersriatent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Application filed October 29, 1919. Serial No. 334,183.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR V. DE COSTA, a citizen of the United States, and-resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys or ornaments; and has for its object to provide a transparent, hollow body containing a fluid and a float, the same being strong and durable as well as attractive in appearance and may be easily manufactured at comparatively slight cost, to be used more particularly as a toy for children.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims:
Tn the accompanying drawings:
The figure is a sectional view of the device showing the general construction of the same.
In my improved construction of a transparent, hollow, spherically-shaped body 1 preferably form the same in halves 10 and 11; the half 10 being preferably of a size a little smaller than that of half 11 so that at its meeting edge 12 it will fit tightly into the corresponding edge 13 of the other half '11.
Both halves are preferably formed of transparent celluloid, Xylonite', isinglass, or other suitable material and these halves are formed commercially one smaller than the other and by interlocking the corresponding edges of the different halves and cementing these edges with a transparent adhesive the ball isrendered practically round, and ow ing to the double thickness of the stock about its center, is rendered very strong and durable and will resist breaking when thrown about upon the floor.
' any possibility of leakage.
I do not wish to be restricted to forming the body in spherical shape as the same may be made in the form of a barrel, egg or any other desired shape.
The device is extremely simple and practical in construction and by my improved method of connecting the two halves together at their middle the ball is made extremely strong and durable and provides a very attractive toy.
I claim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a transparent hollow body formed in two halves having their meeting edges reinforced and hermetically sealed, said body containing a liquid and a float.
2. As an article of manufacture, a transparent hollow celluloid body formed in two halves, the edges of one half fitting into and being cemented to those of the other half providing a doubly thick strengthening circumferential band, said body containing liquid and a float.
3. As an article of manufacture, a transparent hollow spherical celluloid body formed in two halves, one of said halves being made smaller than, the other, the edge of the smaller fitting tightly into and being cemented to that of the larger half, providing a doubly thick circumferential reinforcing band, said body containing liquid and a float.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ARTHUR V. DE COSTA.
