Be it known that I, SAMUEL C. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vlflilliamsport, in the county of lVashington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil- Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
In the construction of crank cases for the crank shafts of' engines, Compressors, etc., difiiculty has been experienced in providing for the efficient lubrication of the cross-head, or wrist-pin, at the upper end of the casing, the devices heretofore employed being unsatisfactory because they result in too free lubrication of the parts, or not enough, or a lubrication that is not constant and reliable.
T he purpose of my said invention is to provide a construction of lubrication means for wrist-pins at the upper end of crank cases which will be dependable and eic'ient in operation at all times, all as will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,

of any usual or appropriate construction and require no special description herein.
Secured to the under side of the journal box, on the lower end of connecting rod E, I attach a casing 10 of substantially the form shown in Fig. 3. Said casing is formed with a bracket 11 with apertures 12 for attaching bolts. An oil pipe 13 extends from a connecting nipple 111 on said casing 10 to an oil hole 15 at its upper end leading into the wrist-pin bearings. Said oil pipe 13 is attached to the connecting rod E by means of brackets 16 and 17 as shown.

The lower end of the casing 10 is formed with funnel-shaped oil receiving mouths 18 connected by ports 19 with a central perforation 20 connecting with the nipple 14 and the oil pipe 123. Said ports 18 are n ormally closed against discharge by the ball valves 21 which open and permit the oil to be admitted from the entrance openings 18 to the oil pipe 13, but close against the return movement of the oil.
In operation as the crank B revolves the 'head carrying casing 10 revolves with it and as it passes through the oil in the lower part of the crank casing the pressure against the ball valve 21 will operate to lift the same and permit the oil to pass into the oil pipe 13 and be forced upward and fed into the oil hole 15 for lubricating the wrist-pin. When the crank is revolving in one direction the oil will be taken in through one opening 18 and when in the other direction through the other-opening, as will be readily understood.' By this means it will be seen that the oil is positively and constantly fed to the wrist-pin and without the necessity of using splashing devices that will unduly agitate the oil or unduly lubricate the upper end of the crank casing.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. rIhe combination with a crank casing, a connecting rod and a wrist-pin bearing, of a chamber carried at the lower end of the connecting rod having valved openings at opposite ends communicating therewith, and a conduit leading from the chamber to the wrist-pin bearing.
