WVncrrn xUer-r, a citizen of: the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, hav invented new and useful improvements in Accounting and Recording Apparatus, oi: which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for keeping and recording accounts, and for addressing, dating, and iiling of customers slips and invoices and the like. It may be used merely for addressing, if desired.
The object of my invention is to provide an apparatus of this kind which is easily and reliably operated with but few nievements on the part of the operator and with a minimum of chances for inaccuracies. One or the objects is to combine an adding machine with a filing cabinet so as to prevent errors which occur in the usual methods of handling such transactions. Another object is to print the name, or address or both, of the person making credit purchases on a credit slip and at the same time rint the total or his purchases thereon. ther objects will appear hereinafter.

On the bottom 2 are the rails el on which the wheels 5 orp the carriage 6 run. The frame or body of the carriage consists of a casting having the ends T and 8, the front 9, the rear 10, and the bott-om 11. The bottom 11 'has the rearwardly projecting lingers 12, on which vertical drawer cases, 13, 141, 1:3, 16, 17 rest, each case being supported on adjacent ngers and standing over the space between such lingers. Near the left hand end of the carriage and just back of the rear end or the cases l locate the four vert'cal posts 20 arranged at the corners of a rectangle and having their tops and bottoms secured in the top 9 and bottoni 2 of the casing. rFliese parts serve as corner guides for the elevator 21 havI ig rollers 22 at its corners bearing against the posts. The elevator has a forward extension 23 located so as to travel up through the space between any two sets of lingers 19 which happens to be over the same. The elevator is secured to the vertical rack-bar by means of a set screw (Fig. rlie upper end of the rack-bar travels up and down through the opening in the :op 3. rEhe lower end or the rack-bar f the cross-head 26 having the arm 9.7 which carries the vertical 'iusher for the galleys of names presently to be described.
bOn the rear side of the carriage 6 are five pairs of vertical guides 29 and between each pair of guides there is a galley plate or name and address carrying plate 30 having vertical grooves in its edges fitting the said vertical guides so that the plates may be guided up and down and securely held in place. Each of the bars 30 is provided with as many horizontal sticks or type-holders 31 as there are drawers in the corresponding series. These sticks contain type 31 (Fig. 15) spelling the names and addresses of the customers to whom the several drawers have been assigned. rlhe names in the several sticks 31 occupy positions on the same corresponding to the positions of the drawers assigned to the customers. rl`he lower ends of the plates 30 may be brought by the movement of the carriage 6 so that any one of them may stand in line with the pusher 28, which, on the raising of the rack bar 24, pushes up whichever plate 30 happens to be over it, this bar corresponding to the series of drawers which have, by the same movement of the carriage '6, been brought over the extension 23 of the elevator 21.
Each plate 30 is provided on its rear face with a series of vertically arranged hooks 30a, and a series of spring hooks 30 arranged opposite the hooks 30. The hooks 30 are secured to the front of the plate 30 and extend through holes 30h. The side of the hooks 30C facing the hooks 30a are beveled. The type-holders 31 are inserted between opposite hooks 30n and 30C by inserting one end of the holder 31 beneath the hook 30EL and then pressing the other end of the holder down on the bevel of the hook 30C, which will be forced away and then spring into the end of the holder when the holder is pressed fiat against the plate 30. The hooks are made wide enough to fill the ends of the holder 31' so that the latter cannot move up or down on the hooks.
The holder 31 is composed of sheet-metal folded in the middle to form a n'kV-shaped member 31a. The lateral members are bent away from each other to form the back portions 311 of the holder. There the lateral members are bent up in the same direction to form the sides 31C, and then bent toward the member 31a, thereby leaving the parallel spaces 31d to receive the necks of the type 31, the type being retained in place by the enlarged portions in the space between the sides and the member 30a. The ends of the member 31L are removed to accommodate the hooks 30L and 30C, which prevent endwise movement of the type.
The extension 23 is directly under the casing 32 on the top 3, into which the case of drawers resting on the extension 23 move when the elevator rises. The casing 32 is placed on the top 3 to contain such portion of any case of drawers as rises above the said top, the front of the casing having a front opening 34 just above the top 3 through which any drawer 18 opposite thereto may move, as shown on Fig. 3. The front of each drawer has a swinging front 35 pivoted to the sides thereof, so that it will, when the drawer has moved forwardly, drop down slightly as shown on Figs..3 and 6 to permit a more ready view of and access to the contents of the drawer'. When the drawers are in normal positions the fronts 35 are supported by the next lower front or by the partitions 19. A projection 36 bent upwardly from the front end of the bottom of each drawer serves as a stop for the slips therein.
rllhe rear end of each drawer has a horizontal swinging dog or latch 37 having a tooth 38 on its left side adapted to catch over the rear wall of the case as shown on Figs. 1 and 7, the casing 32 having a vertical slot 39, through which the ends of the latches o n the drawers move. A coil expansion spring 40 surrounds the dog and is secured to the drawer so as to make it bear against the right-hand side of the catch and push it to the left. The tooth 38 will thereby be moved into locking' engagement with the case 17 when the drawer is pushed entirely in (Fig. 7). The spring 40 is conipressed between the drawer and the case and serves to push the drawer forwardly as shown in Fig. 3, as soon as the tooth of the catch is pushed out of engagement with the associated drawer case.
A casing 41 is provided above the top 3 to contain the galley or name plates 30, when they are lifted above the top 3.
The teeth on the rack bar 24 mesh with the pinion 42 mounted to turn in hangers 42 on the bottom of the top 3. The pinion 43, mounted on the same shaft with the pinion 42, meshes with the pinion 44 secured to 4the square shaft 45 mounted in fixed bearings 46 and 47.
The shaft 45 also supports the pinion 48 which moves with the carriage and slides on the square shaft 45. The pinion 48 meshes with the spur gear 49 carried by the stub-shaft 50 on the carriage 6. The shaft 50 also supports the sprocket wheel 51, over which and the rear idle sprocket wheel 52 the horizontal sprocket chain 53 runs.
rlhe end 7 of the carriage is provided at the top with a pair of horizontal bars 54 just above the sprocket chain and parallel thereto, these bars serving as a guideway for the block 55, which is attached to the chain 53. 0n the block 55 is the vertical stud 56 which extends up through the top 3 and travels in the slot 57 therein to move the carriage backv and forth. The handle 58 is pivoted to the top of the stud 56 so as to have movement to the left.
- The top 3 is provided with asv many branch slots 59 extending forwardly from the slot 57 as there are series of drawers. rlhe naines which are on the galley plates 30 and 'corresponding to the drawers are arranged at the sides of the corresponding slots 59 in the same order and corresponding positions that they occupy in the galley plates. The parts are so proportioned that, when the handle 58 is moved along the slot 57 to any slot 59 and then moved along the latter slot opposite any particular name, the elevator will liftthe corresponding case of drawers until the drawer corresponding'to the naine stands opposite the opening 34 in the case 32, and the corresponding galley plate 30 is raised until the name'thereon corresponding to said drawer stands in printing position before the platen 60 of the printing devices.
Suspended on the links 6l, which are pivoted to the lower side of the top 3, is the horizontal tripper frame 62 having the ingers or bars 63 lying below and tothe right of the branch slots 59, there being as many fingers or bars as there are branch slots. The rear ends of the bars or lingers terminate just forwardly of the main slot 57 so as to be out of the way of the stud 56 and the finger 6d which extends downwardly from the handle 58 and to the right of the stud 56 and stands close Vto the left side of one-of the bars 63 when the handle 58 is in one of the slots 59. The frame 62 has the extension 65 which terminates just to the left of the position in which any dog 37 stands when the drawer which it locks in its casing is opposite the slot 34.
66 is an adding machine of any desired make having the usual keys 67, andthe usual operating handle 68, the usual total wheels 69, and the feed rollers 70 and 7l for the double record strips 72 and 73, wound from the reel or roll 7 5 onto the reel or roll 74. 76 is the ordinary carbon printing ribbon on the adding machine and 77 is an additional carbon ribbon parallel with and back of the ribbon 76. 78 is the carbon halfor copy `of the customers invoice slip, which shows the articles lpurchased and their prices, written out by the storekeeper or clerk when the purchases are made, the writing being made on an original slip provided withl a carbon back which makes a copy on the customers carbon slip in a manner well known. The original slip 79 (Fig. l) is kept in the customers proper drawer 18 except as hereinafter stated.
A pair of cams 8O are attached to the yoke 8l so that, when the yoke is rocked by the handle 82, the cams will spread the rollers 70 and 7l in order that the customers slipl 78 may be dropped between the rollers and also between the ribbons 76 and 77. The slip drops down till it rests on the stop 83.
84 represents the printing bar for the prices orP the items purchased and 85 the platen for causing the prices on the bar 84 to be printed on the strips 72 and 73, and the customers slip. The actuating means or the various printing wheels, ribbons, strips, and platens are well known and the presence of these various elements are indicated conventionally merely to denote their presence without attempting to show completely their actual construction or their connection with other parts.
`When a customer makes credit purchases, the salesman writes the items and the prices on a sales slip beneath which is a duplicate slip. The back of the sales slip, hereinafter called the original slip, is carbonized or a carbon paper is inserted between the two slips, so that the customers slip will contain a copy of the items and prices which have been placed on the original slip. The clerk detaches the original slip and puts the duplicL te or customerls slip between the feed rolls 7 O and 7l, between the inking ribbons 76 and 77, and upon the rest 83, which he is able to do by moving the handle 82 and thereby separating the rollers. The handle 58 is moved along the slot 57 until it comes in line with that slot 59, along which the customers name is found. rl`his movement of the handle moves the carriage 6 along the rails 4; until the case of drawers containing the customers drawer comes beneath the casing 32, and until the galley plate 30 bearing the customers name comes beneath the casing al.
Thehandle 58 is moved along the said slot 59 until the pointer 86 is opposite the customers name on the index. By this movement or the handle, the said drawer case is moved up through the top 3 and into the casing 32 until the customers drawer i8 stands opposite the opening 34:, and the said galley plate 30 is moved up through the top 3 and into the casing Lll until the customers name stands opposite the platen 60 which the usual total wheel platen extended so to lie oppositeany elevated galley plate.
The handle 58 is moved to the left which causes the finger 6a to move the trippingframe 62 to the right, whereupon the end of the extension 65 pushes the dog 37 on the customers drawer to the right until the tooth 38 is moved out of engagement with the drawer casing. The spring 40 surrounding this dog is then free to expand. He also places on the slip the total of former purchases, if any, not paid for, asdisclosed by the top slip in the said drawer, and then causes the total to be printed on the slip. 17. ln a machine of the class described, in combination a plurality of groups of check receptacles; a carrier to elevate any one group of the said receptacles; a variably set member to predetermine the group of receptacles elevated by the carrier; said member having a second variable setting to predetermine the extent of elevation of a group of receptacles whereby a certain receptacle is moved to operating position.

In a machine of the class described, in combination a plurality of groups of check receptacles; a carrier to elevate any one group of the said receptacles; a variably set member to predetermine the group of receptacles elevated by the carrier; said member having a second variable setting to predetermine the extent of elevation of a group of receptacles whereby a certain receptacle is moved to operating position; and means associated with the variably set member for releasing the receptacle in operating position, whereby the said receptacle can move to a position to receive a check.
19. In a machine of the class described in combination; a table having a series of slots therein; and indices adjacent thereto; a variably positionable manipulative member movable in the said slots adjacent the indices; a group of check receptacles; and operating devices associated Withithe said member for moving the group of receptacles to thereby select one receptacle therefrom corresponding to the particular graduation of the index adjacent the variably set member; means associated With the Variably set member to release the said selected receptacle; and means to thereafter move the l0 said selected receptacle to a position to receive a check.
