KOSTANTYN BABECKI, G1? -WINFIELl), NEW YORK.
TOBPED 0-GUARD Application filed. September 27, 1918.
Z '0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, KosrANrriv BABEOKI, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at lVinfield, county of Herkimer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and usef'tl improvements in Torpedo- Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ship fenders and particularly to types adapted to be used in warfare.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a novel construction of hull and a traveling band circumjacent thereto,
adapted to receive the impact of a torpedo,
or like under-sea missile, so as to conduct the same away without doing damage.
A further object is to provide means which completely envelop the hull of the ship at the water line thereof and, due to their constant movement, render the ship invulnerable.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1, is a'side elevational view, showing a conventional type of ship, indicating the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3, is an enlarged fragmentary trans verse view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In Fig. 1, a conventional type of ship 10, is shown, the same being provided with all the usual appurtenances and paraphernalia for navigation and propulsion.
Formed in the hull 14., of the ship, at the water line and extending there below, is an encircling recess or channel 15, the same having a water tight partition 16, extending circuitously around the entire hull.
Secured upon the outer wall or hull 14, of the ship, at spaced intervals, are a plurality of tubular brackets 18, arranged in pairs at the upper and lower edges of the channel 15, and slidable therein are plungers 19, having extending stems or rods 20, encircled by coiled compression springs 21, the springs abutting at one end against the closed outer end of the brackets 18, and at their other end against heads 23, secured to the plunger rods 20.
Mounted to rotate in the heads are spin- Specification of Letters Patent.

dies the same extending vertically from one head to another and fixed upon the spindles are rollers 25.
Also mounted upon the outer surface of vhe adjacent wall 16, are other fixed brackets 8, in which are rotatably engaged vertical rollers 29, similar in all respects to the rollers Supported upon suitable brackets 30, at the bow and stern of the ship, are other vertical spindles 31, carrying band wheels 32, the diameter of which is substantially equivalent to the distance between the peripheries of the rollers 25 and 29.
These band wheels are driven by mechanism (not shown), carried on board the ship so as to be constantly rotated, and passing over the band wheels, on one side of the ship, at the front and rear thereof, is an endless flexible netting 35, making contact with the peripheries of the rollers 25 and 29 respectively, so as to cause the netting to move circuitously and continuously rearward alongside the hull of the ship, thus affording a movable netting, completely encircling the ship, except at the bow and stern.
Arranged at the bow and stern, are slidable plungers 38, pressed normally outward by coiled compression springs 39, and carried at the extremity of the plunger rods, 38, are angular armor plates 40, presenting an obtuse angle 41, at both ends so that if the projectile should strike directly at the front of the vessel it will be caused to shear laterally and engage with the traveling netting 25, the springs 39, permitting the armor plate to move inwardly toward the vessel under the force of a blow or pressure applied from an external source.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a protective device for ships has been disclosed which is entirely capable of performing the function described.
Having thus described my invention what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
in a ship fending device, in combination with the hull of a ship having a channeled recess at the water line and extending therebelow, brackets extending outwardly from the inner vertical wall of the recess, other brackets extending outwardly from the hull of the ship, rollers carried in all of said brackets, band wheels rotatably mounted at the stem and stern upon each side of said ship, said hand Wheels being adapted to rotary motion and continuous flexible nettings on each side of the ship passing over said band Wheels at the rear of the ship to the band Wheels at the front and over said rollers, said nettings moving rearwardly over the rollers on the hull of the ship and toward the front over the rollers Within said channeled recess, and torpedo deflecting means at the bow and stern of said ship, 10 substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have afi'lxed my signature.
