WALTER WHEAL, 0F WORCESTER, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HEENAN & FROUDE LIMITED, OF MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
MATCH-MAKING- MACHINE.
Application filed May l5, 1917.
To all 'whom t may concer-n:
Be it known that I, WALTER Wma-i1., a British subject, residing at IVorcester, county of Worcester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Match-Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines in Which matches are'made by dipping the match stalks into an igniting composition in a trough or container.
In these machines it is desirable to maintain a lovv temperature, as a rise of temperature is detrimental to the igniting composition While drying or solidifying.
The invention consists in incasing the drums and traveling bands of the machine and connecting the interior of the machine to an air cooler by suitable ducts through which cooled air is forced into the body of the machine and to the revolving cylinder or drum which carries the traveling` belt so that the cooled air is caused to have a cooling action on the dipping trough and the stored composition therein, thus maintaining the composition in the dipping trough and the interior of the machine at a low temperature.
The invention Will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, illustrating an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the machine.
The match machine is of ordinary construction vvith a rotary drum or cylinder A and endless band B by which the matches are carried, a dipping trough C and a fan E which supplies air to the interior of the casing. The particular structure of the drum or cylinder A, the endless band B. the dipping trough C, and/ian E is not controlling as to the features of the invention and may be varied in accordance with Well-known match machine structures embodying an endless band Jfor an obvious purpose.
According' to the invention the drum A .and traveling band B are incased by a suitable covering or casingr H. The covering or casing H is air-tight. except Where an air outlet opening hereinafter specied is located, so that cold air mav be caused to eii'ectually perform its cooling function Specification of Letters Patent.

relat'vely tothe composition applied to the natch tips. Upon the top of the machine, a rotary cooler D and a fan E adjacent thereto are mounted, the cooler being of the prei'erred type shown and described in Il. S. Patents Nos. 1,018,242 and 1,018,243, said air cooler having ducts d (Z cl2 leading therefrom to supply cold air to the interior of the cylinder of the machine.
The air is forced by the fan E into the body of the machine by Way of the ducts (Z and CZ through the fan E which is provided to assist fan E in its function of distributing the air, and into the interior of the revolving cylinder A or by Way of the branch duct cl2 direct from the rotary cooler D, in the latter case the fan E not functioiiing. Dampers (Z3 are placed in the ducts to control the circulation of the cold air and in the rear of the cylinder A a partition a is mounted to control and direct the currents of cold air. It Will noW be clear that if the damper Z3 in the duct d is closed. cool air will still be supplied by the fan E to the interior of the drum A by Way of the duct d2. the outlet from which is in close proximity to the open end of the drum A. It the damper cl3 in the duct cl2 closed, the air will be supplied by the 'fan E by Way of the ducts CZ and d and fan E to the interior of the casing. In either case, the air will escape through the outlet F.
Cold air is thus forced into the machine over the traveling band B. into the cylinder A and over the surface of the stored composition and escaping through an aperture F adjacent to the dipping trough, and maintains the composition throughout the machine at a low temperature.
What I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is :k
The combination with a match making machine involving drum, travelingband, and a dipping trough containinga composition for application to match sticks, of a casing forming an air-tight inclosure for the match making mechanism, an air cooler mounted on the top of one extremity of the casing. a fan on the top of the opposite extremity of the casing for drawing air from the cooler and supplying it to the machine, ducts between the cooler and fan and connected to the interior of the machine adjacent to the drum. and a partition Within the casing in rear of the drum and adjacent to tho dipping tough, the casing having an outlet at one Side close to the partition and whereby theV Cold Currents 0I" air will be folcod into the machine over the traveling band vand into the Cylinder and also over the surface' of the composition in the dipping trough mld escapo through the outlet adjacent to the trough.
