A further object is to provide an improved machine in which air pressure is employed to effect absolute seating of the drill in the bottom of the hole to eliminate reciprocation of the drill and prevent cutting or breaking away of the corners of the 'drill.
Another object resides in a live air cushion for the drill in the feeding thereof, so as to effect an automatic feed simulating the firm but yieldable pressure of the manual feed.
Further, the invention resides in the features of construction and the arrangements and combinations of parts described in detail in the following specification and defined in a succinct manner in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein' Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved drill machine constituting the subject matter of the present invention;

Referring more in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the power cylinder in which ilS arranged the impact motor hammer 2 for operating on the drill bit 3. At the front head of the machine, a sleeve at is chambered to receive the hammer and has a reduced forward socket in which the bit is retained. A spacing ring 5 abuts the inner end of the sleeve and seats inthe inner end of a multichamber cylindrical member 6, which conformahly receives the sleeve e and has an internal shoal der 7 against which the latter seats. Surrounding the cylindrical member 6 is the front head or cap 8 having its front wall perforated to receive the collar 9 that is fixedly carried by the bit The rear end of the cap 8 has outstanding perforatedears 10 alined with like ears 11, extending fron the valve 6, for receiving the tie rods 12.
The forward end of the cylindrical member 6 is formed with an annular series of piston cylinders 13 that extend longitudinally of the member and communicate at is screwed into the head over a port 1?. One
of the cylinders 13, preferably the one diametrically opposite port 17., is formed with a second port 18, which communicates through a second head port 19 with the pipe 20, which delivers the fluid to the drill feed-- ing mechanism. in each cylinder a piston 21 is slidably mounted one of which opens and closes the port 18 and thus controls the flow of the live fluid. A drill seating control ring 22 connects the outer ends of the pistons and between this ring and the front wall of head 8 is disposed a floating ring 23 for engagement with the'collar 9 of the bit.

The drill feed mechanism comprises a cylinder 27 which has its rear end closed by a head 28 and its forward 'end closed by a head 29. The head 29 has a supporting disk 30 by which the machine is mounted on a suitable support, not shown. The head 29 receives a clamping ring 31 which clamps a packing ring therein to provide a stuffing box construction for the tubular piston rod casing '33. This casing carries on its outer or forward end a sleeve 34 having a bracket extension 35that embraces the cylinder of the impact motor, being securely connected thereto by the bolts 36. y
The heads of cylinder 27 are connected by tie rods or bolts 37 and upon these bolts is slidable a bracket support 38 having a forwardly extending arm terminating in an upstanding plate 39. This plate is perforated to receive the tie rods 12 that project through the adjacent head 40 of cylinder 1. Between the nuts 41, on the rods 12, and the plate 39 are coiled springs 42 normally holding the latter against the cylinder head and designed to ease the operation and rebound of the machine.
The piston 43, which is operable in cylinder 27, has a tubular piston rod 44 arranged concentrically in the casing 33 and formed at its forward end into a valve casing 45 that is seated in the sleeve 34, as illustrated in Fig. 5. The protruding end of this valve casing is threaded for receiving a cap nut 46. The inner end of the piston rod casing is enlarged and shaped to securely clamp and "hold the piston packing 47 between it and the piston 43.
A rack or toothed member 48 is disposed within the hollow piston rod, being supported therefrom at its forward end by a spider 49, secured to said member, and receiving support at its rear end from a feeding device 50 which is connected thereto.- This device has its stem slidably carried by the cylinder head 28, being resiliently urged forward by the coiled spring 51. The rack tube 48 is provided on its outer opposite sides with a series of teeth or notches 52, those on one side being preferably staggered relative to those on the opposite side thereof.

Fluid pressure is admitted from pipe 20 through the thimble connection 57 (Figs. 9 and 10) and into the valve casing 45, the latter being formed with connecting passageways or by-passcs 58 for connecting the ports of the valve and also enibodying a duct :35) leading to the space between the pistonv rod and its casing. The valve is provided with an inlet port 60 communieating with the duct 59 and an inlet port 61 establishing communication with the space within the piston rod. Both 'inlet ports also serve as exhaust ports when con-' nected by the passageways 58 with the radial exhaust ports 62 and 63 which merge into a common port G4'leading axially through the valvestem and handle .55. A coiled spring 66 encircles the valve stem and urges a tight seating of the valve, at the same time allowing rotation thereof.
In operation, assuming that the drill has just been set and started in its operation The impact motor hammer 2 will drive the drill forwardly, sliding it in its supporting sleeve until the collar 9 has been carried outwardly a fixed distance at which time the piston 21 will have uncovered port 18, the drill seating control ring following the said collar by the live air pressure acting against the pistons 21.
As soon as port 18 is uncovered, live air pressure is admitted into cylinder 27 until the port 18 is again closed by the piston 21. This closing of the port 18 results from the advancing of the drilling machine while the drill itself has been held comparatively still by seating or engaging on the bottom of the hole being drilled. The machine is in a constant state of reciprocation caused by impact of the hammer against the drill and the compressed and will upon expansion, and with the aid of the air pressure, back of piston 43, feed the latter forward upon full stroking of the hammer. The air pressure back of the piston acts as a balance for the impact motor and all of the parts carried by the latter. 7 Thus as the motormoved forward more live air is admitted back of the piston 4t, and the latter thus is at all timesbalanced by air pressure.
Consequently, the drill is intermittently fed and at the same time'is held against its work by the control ring which is constantly held in abutting relation with the collar 9 b5.- the fluid pressure. Thus in addition to theautomatic advance of the machine, the
control ring holds'the drill firmly against -the. botton1 of the hole at all times while I returning the mechanism.

In a drill feeding machine, a cylinder, an impact motor hammer therein, a drill, a sleeve supporting the latter. a head for the cylinder through which the drill e);- tends, a ring encircling the drill and arranged within the head for limited movement to hold the drill against its work, a collar fixed on the drill against which the ring abuts, and fluid pressure means yieldably urging the ring forwardly.
4. In a drill feeding machine. a cylinder, an impact motor hammer therein, a drill, a sleeve supporting the latter, a head for of the drill and at the,
cylinder through which and pneuthe cylinder through which the drill extends, a ring encircling the drill and arranged within the head for limited movement to hold the drill against its work, a plurality of chambers, means for supplying air pressure thereto, and pistons operable in the plural chambers for moving the ring forwardly.

In a drill feeding machine, a cylinder. an impact motor hammer therein, a drill, a sleeve supporting the latter, a head for the cylinder through which the drill ex tends, a ring'encircling the drill and arranged within the head for limited move ment to hold the drill. against its work, a multi-chambered membe' arranged within the head about the sleeve, the chambers of said member opening forwardly and having radial ports leading from their rear ends. said member also having a peripheral groove connecting the ports, and pistons operable in the chambers of said member to move the ring forwardly.

In a drill feeding machine, a cylinder, an impact motor hammer therein, a drill, a sleeve supporting the latter. a head for the the drill extends. a ring encircling the drill and arranged within the head for limited movement to hold the drill against its work, a multi-chambercd member arranged within the head about the sleeve, the chambers of said member opening forwardly and having radial ports leading from their rear ends, said member also having a peripheral groove connecting the ports, pistons operable in the chambers oi said member to move the ring forwardly, and a fluid pressure inlet in the head communicating with the groove of the member.

In a drill feeding machine, a cylinder, an impact motor hammer thereima drill, a sleeve supporting the latter, a head for the cylinder through which the drill extends, a ring encircling the drill and arranged within the head for limited movement to hold the drill against its work, a multi-chambered member arranged within the head about the sleeve, the chambers of said member open-' said member also impact motor carrying the same, and a feed mechanism for the drill comprising a cylinder, a hollow piston head reciprocal in the cylinder and having a hollow piston rod terminating in a valve casing. a valve in the latter for ccmtrolling the admission of fluid pressure through the piston rod into the cylinder, means connecting the motor to the piston rod for simultaneous movement, and a casing sin'rounding the piston rod and communicating atits inner end with the cylinder in advance of the piston head, said valve casing having a port controlled by said valve and leading to the space between the piston ,rod-and its inclosing casing, said piston rod-casing having a port establish ing comm mication betw en said space and the interior of the cylinder in advance of the hollow piston head.
10. In a drill feeding machine. a drill, an impact motor carrying the same, and a feed mechanism for the drill comprising a cylinder, a hollow piston head reciprocal in the cylinder and having a hollow piston rod terminating in a valve casing, a valve in the latter for controlling the admission of fluid pressure through the piston rod into the cylinder, means for locking the piston step by step, and means operable by the valve for rendering the locking means 1noperative.

an impact motor carrying the same, and. a feed mechanism for the drill comprising a cylinder, a hollow piston head reciprocal in the cylinder and having a hollow piston rod terminating in a valve casing, a valve in the latter for controlling the admission of fluid. pressure through the piston rod into the cylinder, a toothed member in the cylinder,
a pawl carried by the piston and engaging the toothed member to hold the piston head against returning, and means connecting the piston rod to the motor.

In a drill feeding machine, a drill, an impact motor carrying the same. and a feed mechanism for the drill comprising a cylinder, a hollow piston head reciprocal in the cylinder and having a hollow piston rod terminating in a valve casing, a valvein the latter for controlling the admission of fluid pressure through the piston rod into the cylinder, means supporting the motor from the piston rod, a rotatable toothed member telescopically related to the piston head and disposed in the cylinder, a pawl carried by the piston head for engaging the teeth of the toothed member, and means for rotatfeeding fluid pressure to the teeding mechanism and ing the tooth member to bring its teeth from engagement by the pawl to permit return movement of the piston head.

In a drill feeding machine, a drill, an impact motor carrying the same, and a feed mechanism forthe drill comprising a cylinder, a hollow piston head reciprocal in the cylinder and having a hollow piston rod terminating in avalve casing, a valve in the latter for controlling the admission of fluid pressure through the piston rod into the cylinder, means for supporting the motor from the piston rod, a rotatable toothed member telescopically related to the piston head and disposed in the cylinder, a pawl carried by the piston head for engaging the teeth of the toothed membe', and a key rod operable by the valve and slidably connected to the toothed member to rotate the latter and thereby disengage its teeth from the pawl.
