TELEPHONE-RECEIVER HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
Application led September 10, 1919. Serial No. 322,856.
VT 0 all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SnuPsoN, a citizen of the United States, residmg at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Telephone-Recelver Holders, of which the following 1s a speeli'ication. p
This invention relates to an appliance for telephones, and particularly pertains to a receiver holder.
In answering a telephone it often occurs that both hands are required, and. as o ne hand is necessary to hold the receiver 1nconvenience arises. It is the principal object of the present invention, therefore, to provide a simple attachment for telephone receivers which will permit the receiver to be held to the ear without the use of either hand and without permanent fastening to the party using the telephone.`
The present invention contemplates the use of a U-shaped shoulder member adapted to be secured to the small end of a tele hone receiver and acting as a support for t e receiver when the U-shaped member is resting upon the shoulder and the end of the receiver is resting against the ear of the party listening.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a view in elevation, illustrating the preferred form of the invention as applied to a telephone receiver, a fragmentary portion of which is here shown.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the parts disclosed in Fig. 1 further indicating the pivotal action of the rest.
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation showing a modified form of the invention as applied to a telephone receiver and indicating the position of the receiver when in use.
Fig. 4 is a view in plan, showing the modified form of the invention.
Referring more particularly -to the drawings, 10 indicates a telephone receiver of conventional design and having the usual enlarged end 11, upon which binding posts 12 and 13 are positioned. Mounted around the cylindrical portion of the receiver, adjacent to the end 11, is a clamping ring 14 forming a part of the present invention. This ring, as used in the preferred form of the invention shown in igs. 1 and 2, is
fitted with outturned ears 15 for receiving a set-screw 16 by which the ring may be securely fastened around the receiver.
Upon diametrically opposite sides of the ring pivot members 17 and 18 are fixed. The member 18 is externally threaded to receive a lock nut 19, while the two pivot members are provided to engage frame straps 20 and 21. These straps are identical in formation `and extend outwardly over diametrically opposite sides of the receiver, being pivoted at theirl inner ends to the members 17 and 18. The outer ends of the straps 20 and 21 are outturned and conform with an arcuate rest member 22. This member may be formed of metal and is preferably provided with a pad surface 23, corrugated or otherwise abraded to prevent slipping when it is resting upon the shoulder of the user.
Reference being had to Figs. 3 and 4, a modified form of the invention is shown in which a single piece of metal is used to provide an annular fastening member 24 through which the body of the receiver may be secured and which member is continued with a neck portion 25, the lower ends of which separate to form a semi circular shoulder rest 26. In Fig. 3it will be noted that the neck is bent so that the telephone receiver will be held in a proper angular position when the shoulder rest is in place.
In the operation of the present invention either form of the device may be applied to a telephone receiver, and as will be recognized will not interfere with its use nor prevent it from being hung upon the ordinary receiver hook.
In the preferred form of the device the receiver may be set at any angle desired by swinging upon its pivot members 17 and 18 and thereafter locking the ring 14 by the locking nut 19. In the modified form of the invention this adjustment is permanently made bv the bend in the neck 25.
When the receiver is used, the operator rests the enlarged portion 27 against the ear and laces the rest upon the shoulder. The weig t of the receiver will thus be disposed upon the shoulder and due to the inclination of the receiver will remain in position while allowing the operator the use .of both hands. Thus it will be seen that the structure here disclosed is quite simple in construction and inexpensive, both as to labor and material, and that the device .may be readily applied to telephone rece1vers now in use for furnishing simple means by which the receiver may be suplported without depriving the operator of t e use of both hands.
While I have shownthe preferred form of my invention as now known to 'me, it will be understood that various changes in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be made by those skilled in the art Without departing from the spirit of the invention as-claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A telephone receiver holder formed of a single strip of resilient metal, a central portion of which provides a loop embracing the shank of a telephone receiver, and the opposite ends of which extend outwardly and in a plane at an angle to the plane of ,the loop for providing a saddle adapted to be positioned over a shoulder of an operator.
2. A telephone receiver holder formed of a single stri of resilient metal, a` central portion of w ich provides a loop embracing the shank of a telephone receiver, and the opposite ends of which extend outwardly and in a plane at an angle to the plane of the loop for providingv a saddle adapted to be positioned over a shoulder of an operator, and clamping means passing through the member at a point adjacent the loop by means of which the holder is rigidly secured to a telephone receiver.
In testlmony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' CHARLES F. SIMPSON.
