To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS N. RUssnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-(Jars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Edy invention relates to'railway cars, and it has for one of its objects the provision of a new and improved form of car end structure adapted to be applied either to a new car in the course of its construction or to an old car of either a steel frame or a wooden frame construction. It is one of the objects of my invention to provide in a structure of this type reinforcing and strengthening means for insuring proper rigidity of the end wall of the car. As is wellknown in the railway car art, upon the sudden starting or stopping of a loaded car, enormous stresses are brought to bear upon the ends of the car by the shifting of the load and it is essential that the end walls be very strongly constructed and braced if the car is to be maintained for any considerable time in first class condition. To this end I have used an end-closure member reaching from the top to the bottom of the end of the car, provided with means for reinforcing it in order to secure the maximum strength longitudinally of the car, such reinforcing means being in the form of a rib pressed in horizontal position in the end-closure member near its upper edge, such transversely-extending rib being adapted to strengthen the end-closure structure against bowing outward between its side edges, either in connection with an end-plate or independently thereof. The member is held against bowing outward between its upper and lower edges by a plurality of vertically extending ribs pressed therein adapted to cooperate with the hori zontal rib. It is another object of my invention to improve railway cars in sundry details hereinafter pointed out. The preferred means by which I have accomplished my several objects are illustrated in the accompanying drawings and are hereinafter specifically described. That which I believe to be new and desire to cover by this application isset forth in the claims.

Referring to the several figures of the drawings in which corresponding parts are indicated by the same reference charactors,-
10 indicates the end-sill of a car, 11 the end-plate, 12 the ridge-pole, 13 the purlins, let the side-plates, 15 the side-sheathing, and 16 the floor, all being arranged in any approved manner. As is common in car structures, the end-plate 11 and the horizontallyextending frame parts connected therewith are very firmly braced relative to the end sill 10 and the horizontally-extending frame parts connected therewith. Inasmuch as this bracing means may be of any suitable type, it is believed to be unnecessary to illustrate it herein.
17-18 indicate sheet metal end closure plates arranged side by side transversely of the car having their adjacent edges secured together by a plurality of bolts or rivets. The plates 17-18 are secured to the endsill 10 in the construction shown by means of bolts 19 passing through the end-sill. Each of the plates 17-18 is provided at its outer edge with a flange 20 turned about the side of the car, being secured in position by bolts 21 passing through the side-sheathing 15 and through the portion of the framework adjacent thereto. The plates 17-18 are provided near their upper edges with a strengthening rib comprising the portions 22-23, respectively. The separatelyformed portions of this rib are connected together and reinforced relative to each other by means of a reinforcing bar 24: which is secured in position in the separately-formed portions by means of bolts 25. As is shown in Fig. l, the strengthening rib 2223 is of varying depth, being of a maximum depth at about the middle of the car. In the construction shown the upper ends of the plates 17-18 are secured to the end-plate 11 by means of bolts 26, a plurality of such bolts being used on opposite sides of the rib 22 913. A. facia-plate 27, partly broken away in F 1, is secured to the end-plate l1 overlapping the end-closure plates 1718.
Each of the end-closure plates 1.7-18 is provided With a series of strengthening ribs pressed therein, comprising inwardlydirected ribs28 and outwardly-directed ribs 29 in alternate position whereby a corrugated surface is produced as shown in l ig. 2.

So far as I am aware, I am the first in the art to provide an end-closure plate extending from the top to the bottom of the end-closure structure, having pressed in its upper end a transversely-extending strengthening rib which is adapted to cooperate with vertically-extending strengthening ribs pressed in such plate for stiifening and strengthening the end structure, and iny claims are to be construed accordingly.

3. A box-car end-sheet adapted to extend from top to bottom of the car-end frame and having a horizontal stiffening rib formed integrally in it adjacent one of its ends and having a multiplicity of side-byside vertical corrugations extending sub stantially from said horizontal rib to near the other end of the sheet, said rib and corrugations substantially filling the body of the sheet and tapering oif into the plane margins thereof.
