POSITIONING DEVICE FOR EYELET AND HOOK SETTING MACHINES.
Application-filed May 10, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZ F. MUTHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Positioning Devices for Eyelet and Hook Setting Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that type of eyelet and hook setting machines in which the setting device or means connected therewith, is movable and is employed for feeding the material to be operated upon, and more particularly to means for positioning the set ting means in such machines at the end of the feeding movement. Heretofore in the use of this type of eyelet or hook setting machines no means has been provided for positioning and locking the setting means at the end of the feeding movement, and it sometimes happens that at the end of this movement the setting means are not exactly in the right position, in which case the hook or eyelet being set is defective. This is more noticeable in machines where there is lost motion due to wear and other causes.
The main object of my invention is to provide automatic means in machines for setting eyelets and hooks, whereby the punch bar at the end of its feeding movement is positively positioned in the exact location necessary to the setting operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide means of the above character which are capable of adjustment in order to accommodate the device to the adjustment of the length of feed in machines of this character.

My invention consists, briefly, in providing means for automatically engaging and locking the movable part carrying the se ting and feeding means, whether combined or separate, in machines for setting eyelets and hooks, so that at the end of the feeding movement the lock automatically engages the movable part to position the setting device. Means are also provided to maintain the movable part in engagement with the locking means so that if, during the operation of the machine, the movable part overruns the proper length of feeding movement, it will be moved rearwardly into engage- Specifieation of Letters Patent.

ment with the locking means; and additional means are provided for releasing the locking means before the movable part begins its movement toward the starting point, these means being automatically operated at the completion of the setting operation.
In the drawings in Figure l is shown a front elevation of a portion of an eyelet setting machine equipped with a positioning device constructed and operated in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same looking downwardly in Fig. 1.
In the drawings, I have shown my invention as applied to an eyelet setting machine of the type illustrated in Letters Patent No. 686,928, granted on an application of P. R. Glass to which reference may be had for details not herein shown.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a laterally movable frame, having a bearing 6 Within which reciprocates a bar 7 which in the Glass patent machine, hereinbefore referred to, carries a combined punch and setting device not shown in the drawings. The frame 5 is supported and moves on two guide rods 10 mounted in a fixed part 14 of the frame of the machine, having corner extensions 16 bored to receive the rods 10 which are held by screws 18. In the Glass machine referred to, the frame 5 and the punch bar 7 are operated by suitable cams, the, cycle of movements of the same being as follows. At the beginning of the movement, the frame 5 is at its extreme right position on the bars 10, (referring to Fig. 1) at which point the punch bar 7 is moved downwardly to punch a hole in the material, after which it is raised slightly to release it from the work plate and the frame then is moved laterally to the left carrying the punch bar with it, the end of the punch remaining in the hole in the material to feed it. At the end of the feeding movement a lower set (not shown) carrying an eyelet is moved upwardly and forces the end of the eyelet barrel against a setting shoulder on the punch, thereby clenching the eyelet on the material. Upon the conclusion of the setting operation, the punch moves upward freeing itself from the material and the frame 5 moves laterally from left to right, returning to the starting point. All of the foregoing construction is old and well known and is set forth in detail in the Glass patent hereinbefore referred to.
Passing now to a description of the form of positioning device embodying my invention which is shown in the drawings, the means provided for locking the movable frame 5 in setting position comprises a latch 20 pivotally mounted in a yoke 22 ona headed pin 24 held against displacement by a cotter pin 26. The latch has at its free end a spur 28 adapted to engage a part 30 of the movable frame 5 to lock it against lateral movement from left to right. The latch is shown in such locking engagement with the frame in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A spring 32 may be provided to hold the latch downwardly against the frame 5; one end of the spring being bent over the yoke 22 and the otherend over a pin 34 set transversely in the free end or head of the latch. The face of the latter is beveled so that it will ride up over the bevel 35 in the part 30 when the frame is moving from right to left during the feeding movement. The yoke 22 may be secured to a fixed part of the frame of the machine by any suitable means, such as, by being secured to an angle piece 36 which is in turn fastened to the frame by one of the screws 18. Because of 'the fact that most eyelet and hook setting machines of the type referred to herein have provision for regulating the length of the feeding movement in order to determine the distance between the eyelets or the hooks in the work, the yoke 22 is provided with a slot 38 and mav be moved longitudinally on the angle piece 36 by loosening a set screw 40 which normally holds it in position.
For the purpose of holding the frame, while in a locked position, in engagement with the latch, any suitable means may be provided and one such is shown consisting of a helical spring 41 coiled about the guide rod 10 between the part 30 and a part 16 on the fixed frame 14. This spring should be sufliciently strong enough to throw the frame 5 back against the latch when it overruns its setting position.
In order to release the latch at the conclusion of the setting operation, I provide means carried by the punch bar for raising the latch out of engagement with the frame 5. The preferred form of these means as shown in the drawings consists of a bent finger 42 carried by a split collar 44, which is secured and held by a screw 46 on the punch bar 7. lhe collar is adjusted in such vertical position on the punch bar that the finger 42 engages the transverse pin 34 in the head of the latch when the latter is in locked position. (see Fig. 1.) The bent finger is inserted in a vertical hole in the collar so that it may be turned laterally into operative position and when in that position may be held by a set screw 48. Any movement of the punch bar in an upward direction raises the latch and releases the frame 5.
For the purpose of preventing wear on the frame 5 where the latch engages it, a washer 50 may be provided and locked in position on the rod 10 by means of a collar 52 inserted between the two topmost parts of the frame 5. The washer 50 and collar 52 move with the frame 5 as a part thereof.
The operation of my device is as follows: When the latch has been adjusted to conform to the position of the frame 5 during the setting operation, which, of course, is determined by the length of feed to which the machine is adjusted and the other adjustments such as the collar on the punch bar and the finger in the collar have been made, the device is ready for operation. As the frame 5 moves from the punching position to the setting position, that is, from right to left, referring to the drawings, the part 30 first engages the beveled face of the head of the latch which rides up over the bevel 35 and on top of the part 30 until the frame 5 reaches the end of its feeding movement or the setting point when the latch is forced downwardly by the spring 32 into locking position. If by chance the frame goes beyond this point, the spring 41 forces it back against the latch. During the feeding movement, the punch bar travels horizontally with no vertical movement but at the conclusion of the setting operation, it is raised whereupon the finger 42 elevates the latch to free the frame 5 for its return movement.
It is to be observed that the operation of my device is simple and positive and that the moving part of the machine is positioned accurately so that imperfect settings, due to lost motion or other causes, are obviated and perfect settings assured.
The simplicity of the adjustment for changes in the length of the feed is another advantage of my device which contributes to economy of time.
It is to be understood that my invention is not to be limited to the precise construction herein shown and described as it may be embodied in various other forms of construction all within the purview of my invention.
What I claim is 1. In an eyelet or hook setting machine, the combination of a laterally movable frame carrying a punch bar, means for locking said frame at the end of its feeding movement, means for holding the frame in engagement with said locking means and means for releasing the locking means by the upward movement of the punch bar.
2. An eyelet or hook setting machine having, in combination, a laterally movable frame carrying a vertically reciprocating punch bar, means for locking said frame at the, end of its lateral movement, means for holding said frame in engagement with said locking means and means carried by said punch bar for releasing said locking means when said punch bar is moved upwardly.
3. An eyelet or hook setting machine havii g, in combination, a frame, a vertically reciprocating punch bar mounted on said frame, said frame being laterally movable to feed the material to be operated upon, means for locking said frame at the end of its feeding movement, means for holding said frame in engagement with said locking means and means for releasing said locking means when said punch bar is moved upwardly.
4. An eyelet or hook setting machine having, in combination, a frame, a reciprocating punch bar carried by said frame, said frame being laterally movable to feed the material in the machine, a latch for engaging and locking said frame at the end of the feeding movement and means for releasing said latch when said punch bar is moved upwardly.
5. An eyelet or hook setting machine having in combination, a frame, a reciprocating punch bar carried by said frame, said frame being laterally movable to feed the material in the machine, a latch for engaging and locking said frame at the end of the feeding movement, means for holding said frame in engagement with said latch and means for releasing said latch when said punch bar is moved upwardly.
6. An eyelet or hook setting machine, having, in combination, bodily movable feeding means, a latch for engaging and for locking said feeding means at the end of the feeding movement and means for releasing said latch.
7. An eyelet or hook setting mach ne, having, in combination with means for punching a hole and setting an eyelet therein and bodily movable means for feeding the material of a latch for engaging and for looking said feeding means at the end of the feeding movement and means for releasing said latch before the next feeding movement.
8. An eyelet or hook setting machine, having, in combination with means for setting an eyelet, means for holding the material in which the eyelet is set and bodily movable means for feeding material of a latch for locking said feeding means at the end of the feeding movement and means for releasing said latch.
9. An eyelet or hook setting machine, having, in combination with means for setting an eyelet and bodily movable means for feeding the material in which the eyelet is set of a latch for engaging and for locking said feeding means at the end of the feeding movement, means for holding said feeding means in engagement with said latch and means for releasing said latch.
10. An eyelet or hook setting machine, having, in combination with means for setting an eyelet and bodilv movablemeans for feeding the material in which the eyelet is set of a latch for locking said feeding means at the end of the feeding movement, a spring for holding said feeding means in engagement with said latch and means for releasing said latch.
11. An eyelet or hook setting machine, having, in combination with means for setting an eyelet and bodily movable means for feeding the material in which the eyelet is set of a latch for locking said feeding means at the end of the feeding movement, a spring for holding said feeding means in engagement with said latch and a finger in engagement With said latch for releasing it; said finger being operated by a movable part of the setting means.
12. An eyelet or hook setting having, in combination, frame, a reciprocating punch-bar carried by said frame, a latch for locking said frame at the end of its lateral movement, a spring for holding said frame in engagement with said latch when the latter is in a locking position and means for releasing said frame.
18. An eyelet or hook setting machine, having, in combination, a laterally movable frame, a reciprocating punch-bar carried by said frame, a latch for locking frame at the end of its lateral movement, a spring for holding said frame in engagement with said latch when the latter is in a locking position and a finger carried by said punchbar for engaging said latch and for releas ing said frame when said punch is raised.
14. An eyelet or hook setting machine having, in combination, a frame, a reciprocating punch-bar carried by said frame, said frame being laterally movable to feed the material being operated upon by the machine, a latch for locking said frame at the end of its feeding movement, means for holding said latch in engagement with said frame, a spring for holding said frame in engagement with said latch and a projecting finger carried by said punch-bar for releasing said frame from said latch.
