Description

Y 1. c. KENNEY. MECHANISM SUPPORT FOR TALKING MACHINES.

MECHANISM-SUPPORT FOR TALKING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn C. KENNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scottdale, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful, Improvements in Mechanism-Supports for Talking-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the subject of acoustics, and has particular reference to a novel mechanism support for talking machine cabinets whereby the sounds produced are greatly clarified and, generally improved in tone.
To this end the invention contemplates a cabinet construction, wherein the entire sound reproducing mechanism, including the motor and sound amplifying horn, is mountwhich rests upon a resonant plate and has no other connection or point of attachment with the surrounding cabinet or housing. 1
A- further object of the invention is to provide a simple and ractical construction which is easily assemb ed and readily accesmaking repairs or adjustments to the motor or other operating parts.
With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the description of the invention proceeds, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter 1 more fully described, illustrated andclaimed.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
The figure is a vertical sectional view of a cabinet embodying the present improvements, portions of the cabinet being shown in elevation.
Although the present invention is sus ceptible of embodiment in various styles of talking machine cabinets there is shown in the drawing an upright cabinet structure U which houses the entire sound producing mechanism and operating the motor M. That tion of the cabinet rier element which consists of a fiat table portion 1 having thereon the tone arm 2 and reproducer 3, and also the rotary platen 4 mounted on the motor driven spindle 5 above the top surface of the table, while the said motor llLhoused within a suitable casing, is

suspended from the under side thereof.
This table is provided with the supporting members 6, and also carries. the sound am plifying horn 7 which connects with the tone arm. Therefore, it will be apparent that the entire sound reproducing unit is arranged upon the carrier which comprises the table 1 and supporting members 6, and as will be seen from the drawing the said table and all of its associated parts are absolutely separate and independent from the casing G and have no connection at any point therewith.
Referring now more particularly to the novel and distinctive feature of the invention it will be observed that the entire carrier is seated upon a resonant rest preferably a glass plate 8 the same being supported upon suitable felt, rubber or equivalent cushion elements 9 carried by the vertical corner posts or strips 10 in each corner of the cabinet. By. reason of the fact that the entire sound reproducing mechanism is solely supported on this plate 8 the sounds and tones reproduced by the playing mechanism are greatly. amplified and clarified. And, because of the special mount ing of the resonant plate on the corner strips 10, none of the vibrations of the casing parts are transformed into audible sounds that might otherwise be carried into the reprothat the present invention proposes to provide a simple and practical mechanism support Whichnot only apparatus, but also amplifies and clarifies the sounds, so as to make the rendition of selections more attractive than with the usual cabinet construction.
