BENJAMIN MARSHAL WARD AND I-IIRAM GENTRY SMITH, OF FAYETTEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
FIRE-BASKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
Application filed April 26, 1919. Serial No. 293,014.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that We, BENJAMIN MAR- SHAL l/VARD and HIRAM GENTRY SMITH, citzens of the United States, and residents of Fayetteville, in the county of Cumberland and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire Baskets, of which the following is a spec1- fication.
This invention relates to what is commonly known as a fire basket and aims to primarily provide a device of this nature which may be readily assembled and knocked down.
The invention further aims to provlde a device which may be applied to any hearth and removed therefrom at will without the aid of any mechanics. It is further aimed to construct a fire basket conforming generally to the contour of the conventional hearth, so that the same may be pleasing to the eye and be more readily applicable to hearths of various dimensions. q
Figure 1 illustrates an assembled new of my fire basket,
Fig. 2 shows specifically the construction of the bottom,
Fig. 8 is a section along the lines a-a of Fi 1 Fig. 4: is a view of the front piece of the basket,
Fig. 5 an illustration of one of the side members,
Fig. 6 anotherassembled view along the lines b-b of Fig. 1.
In these drawings it will be noted that 1 designates the front piece provided with integral down curved lugs 3 extending outwardly from its side edges. The front piece is further provided with lugs 1 adjacent its lower edges and extending inwardly at right angles therefrom. It will be noted that bars 5 are provided in the front piece 1, through which the fire in the basket may radiate its rays. Side pieces 6 are also provided with rods 5 and are further formed with openings 8 through which engage the lugs 3, and are equipped with integral legs 2 at their ends for supporting the fire basket.
The rear wall is in the nature of a back ing plate 9 provided with openings 11, it
is of less length than the front wall and is equipped with lugs similar to the lugs 4, with which the front wall is provided. A bottom 12 equipped with spaced bars and forming a grate and having rearwardly converging sides 13, is adapted to rest upon the lugs 4: of the front piece 1 and the rear wall 9.
To assemble the basket all that is necessary to be done is to slip the lugs 3 through the openings 8 of the side pieces, whereby a rigid four-wall structure will be formed and to then drop the bottom plate 12 so that it rests upon the lugs 4:. To knock the basket down this procedure is merely re versed.
It will be noted that this basket is entirely self-contained and removable at will and that by virtue of the flaring construction of the bottom plate 12 the same accommodates itself to the conventional hearth and presents a great improvement in this latter feature over fire baskets of previous construction in that fire baskets of square construction might abut with their rear wall against the side walls of the hearth and thus not permit the placing of the basket sufficiently far back in the hearth. Further this construction adds to the appearance of the hearth, in that the side bars of the bottom piece 13 will extend approximately parallel to the side walls of the hearth and thus present the appearance of having been especially constructed for the hearth.
We claim A fire basket including a front, a rear, and side walls, the side walls having openings therein, the front and rear walls having lugs projecting from their ends, said lugs having downturned ends, said lugs passing through the openings of the side walls and engaging the side walls whereby to secure the front, rear and side walls together, and a bottom wall supported within the aforesaid walls, and at the lower ends thereof.
BENJAMIN MARSHAL WARD. HIRAM GENTRY SMITH.
