FANNIE DE GRAFF, OF IL'WACO, WASHINGTON.
WAFFLE-IRON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
Application filed April 19, 1919. Serial No. 291,256.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, FANNLE DE GRAFF,
quirement of extreme heat.
Another obj ect. is to construct a waflie iron which is designed to be lifted bodily and turned with very little exertion.
With the foregoing and other objects in.
view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a waflie iron constructed in accordance with this invention and shown in closed position, parts of the handle being, broken out,
' Fig. 2 is a similar view with the iron shown open, and
Fig. 3 is an edge view with parts broken out.
,In the embodiment illustrated, the waflie iron 1 constituting this invention is composed of two cooperating sections 2 and 3, which may be of any desired configuration, being here shown circular. These sections 2 and 3 are hingedly connected at 4 and provided at diametrically opposite points with handles 5 riveted or otherwise rigidly secured thereto and which are preferably made about twelve or fourteen inches long, although obviously their length may be varied. These handles 5 are so arranged that when the sections 2' and 3 are closed they will overlap as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, so that when grasped by the cook the sec tions will be held in closed position.
Each section has a batter chamber 6 surrounded by an upstanding flange 7 and havmg on its inner face a pattern in cameo, said pattern being of any desired configuration, here shown in the form of a star with diamond shaped elements 8 distributed thereover.
Surrounding the batter chamber 6 is an extension trough 9, here shown annular which is designed to catch any batter overflowing from chamber 6 or which may be dropped from the spoon while said chamber is being filled. This trou h 9 has an upstanding flange 10 aroun its outer edge and when the sections 2and 3 are closed the edges of these flanges abut as is shown clearly in Fig. 3..
These sections are preferably made as light as possible and hence the preferred m terial is aluminum, although iron may be used and molded as thin as is ossible so that the irons may be readily 1i ed by the handles 5 for turnlng or transportation.
The outer flat faces of the sections 2 and 3 are designed to rest on the top of a stove in a manner similar to a frying pan but are preferably provided with spacing ribs 11 so that the heat will be evenly distributed throughout chamber 6. The rib 11 here shown is in the form of a star, but obviously it need not necessarily be of this configuration.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advanta es of the construction and of the method 0 operation will be readil apparent to those skilled in the art to whic the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A waffle iron comprising two members having up-standing side walls at the perimea batter chamber proper with an upstan ing ribaround its outer edge, a catch trough outer face of the iron from its support to 10 formed between said rib and said up-standinsure uniform cooking of its contents.
ing side walls of the member and surround- In testimony whereof I aflix my. signature ing said chamber on the innerface of said in presence of two Witnesses. member, a Spacing rib 011 the Outer face Of MRS each of said members, the outer faces of said members being fiat throughout their entire Witnesses:
area except for said spacing rib to provide E. M. LANDIs,
for the uniform spacing of all parts of the Mrs. H. E. THOMAS.
