Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
C. C. TAYLOR, OF DELAFIELD, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVED BUCKET FOR WATER-WHEELS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 13,366, dated July 31, 1855.
ino all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, C. C. TAYLOR, of Dela field, in the county of Vaukesha and State of ViscOnsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vater- Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of wheel. Fig. 2 is a top view of issue-bed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line @c .fr of Fig. 2, looking toward the periphery of the wheel, showing the shape of bucket and adjustable water issue.
Similar characters of reference in the several figures denote the same part.
My invention has reference to the class of wheels known as percussion and reaction wheels; and it consists in constructing the bucket of a double inclined plane for bottom, and widening from top to outlet, so as to make the ou ter side of the bucket a conical surface, the upper inclined plane being perpendicular to the bottom of the water issue for receiving the percussion of the water under the most favorable circumstances.
The details of construction, operation, and advantages will be readily understood from the following` description and reference to the drawings.
Ais the wheel, the 'buckets Bof which are constructed upon the concentric rims a and I), the former constituting the inner faces of the buckets and the latter the mere connec` tion for the upper portions of the buckets; l, bucket having its bottom made up of the two inclined planes e and d, and swelling outward at the outside by the conical surface c,
' the opening widening from the top to the ou tlet of the bucket; C, bed containing water issues, and within which the rim b moves, as shown in Fig. 3; D, water issue, the bottom f being perpendicular to the portion e of the bucket. The top h of the issue is secured to the rim E and movable toward the bottom f by the movement of said rim or plate, the position shown in Fig. 3 permitting the greatest capacity of issue; E, rimor annular plate, to which the upper portions h of all the issues are secured and capable of movement under guides by means of the rack r, and a pinion operated from above or in any other suitable manner, this movement of the plate E causing the approach to or recedence from the bottoms f of all the portions h of the issues.
The operation of my improved wheel is as follows: The capacity of the issues is first regulated to the amount of power required by moving the plate E, the manner in which the space between f and h would be changed being exhibited in Fig. 3. The water passes to the bucket, as shown by arrow l, impingng upon the portion e with direct percussion and passing from the bucket, as indicated by arrow 2, when it favors rotation in direction of arrow 3 by reaction. After the water strikes e the centrifugal force due to rotation carries a portion of the water outward into the conical part c of the bucket, upon which it reacts on leaving the wheel, and adds greatly to the reactive power of the wheel.
The advantage of this wheel consists in obtaining the best possible action from percussion and an increased effect from reaction due to the peculiar form and construction of the buckets.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Swelling the outer portion of the bucket into a conical surface c, as described, and combining the same with the double inclined plane e d, substantially as and for the purposes specied.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
C. C. TAYLOR.
