To all whom t may concern Be` it known that I, citizen of the United Walker township,
ARTHUR E. 'IEALLa States, residing 1n in the county of Kent. and
i State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Phonographs, ot which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to phonographs; and an object thereof is u phonograph improved in various eatures` of construction; a further object is to provide a phonogra h havingl improved resonantqualities; a urther object is to provide l sutiiciently strong and igid but nevertheless vibratile under the action of sound waves: a further object is to provide in a phono- "graph an improved sound amplifier; a fur ther object 1s to provide in such an am plifier a plurality of branches so disposed interrelatively that the sound waves issuingY therefrom intersect and blend; a further objectis to provide a phonograph wherein the vibratile outer Wall of the phonograph forms a wall of the amplifier; a further ob- 'ject is to provide an amplifie]I having a middle and side branches; a further obect is to provide an improved valvc'for governing the volume of sound. issuing from the anipliiier; a further object is to provide an improved counterbalancing device for the hinged cover of the cabinet.
These and any other objectsl hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in. the structure hereinafter described and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in Which:-

In the embodiment of the invention chosen for illustration by the dravings and for detailed descri tion in the body of this specification, the p ionograph has a cabinet or casing circular (or substantially so) in horizontal section. |The record support or turntable 9 abovf` the partition liis rotated by suitable means (notshown) in the chamber 10 below the partition.- The swingable tone arm 11 carries suitable sound reproducing means (not shown) and communicates through a sound passage 12 in the partition with the horn .or sound amplifier which comprises a vertical member 13 and branches leading therefrom through orifices 14. 15,` 16 respectively. The middle branch 17 has side Walls 18. 19. and the outer or side branches 20, 21 have ,inner Walls 22. 23 respectively (see Fig. 2). :their outer walls being parts of the curved vouter wall of the cabinet itself. The mutually adjacent Walls 19. 22 and 18, 23 of the lside branches andv of the middle branch are in nonparallel relation y spaced apart by the spaces 24, 25. The lower section 5`ot` the cabinets outer wall has an opening 26therethrough, which may he lilled by a preferably removable |grille 2T, through which opening the sound waves pass from the phonograph. It will be seen (particularly in Fig. 2) that theY side branches of the amplifier curve towardyeacll other toward their mouths. so that the sound Waves issuingfrom all the branches intersect and blend at the mouthsrof the branches. This provision has the effect of modifying' and softening the tone which leaves the instrument and strikes the ear.
The upper Walls 28 of the side branches curve upwardly (as particularly shown in Figs. 1 and 4) so that the sound therein gradually Widen towar their mouths in a vertical direction and also in a horizontal direction as seen in Fig. 2. It will be seen that the walls of the ampliiers branches. as Well as the walls 29, 30 contain-| passages S5 and are respectlvelv having a lever arm 33 for swmguig il la located in the mam or vertical porion of the amplifier.
