PATRICK VINCENT BRIVILL, 0F PAQURTTE STATION. ONTARIO, CANADA.
Application lcd July 25,
ytains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in rural mail boxes, and has for an object to provide a mail box embodying a mounting of novel construction and arrangement by means of which it is supported for movement into and out of extended position, means further being provided for opening the lid when the box is moved to extended position and for closing the lid and return` ing the whole to its retracted position when released.
IVith the above and other objects of simi` lar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure l is a top plan view of a mail box constructed in accordance with the invention and in retracted position,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Fig. 8 is a top plan view showing the box in extended position,
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of what is shown in Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the signal and its related mechanism.
Referring now more particularlyl to the accompanying drawing, there is shown an upright or post 5 which is anchored in the ground in any desired manner and has secured upon its top a plate 6. Pivoted to the plate at one edge thereof for horizontal swinging movement is one end of an arm 9, the other end of said arm having attached thereto a horizontal platform or bar 10.
Mounted upon and secured to the bar'lO is a mail box 11 provided with a peaked lid 12 which is hinged to the box as indicated at 13. One end of the platform carries a handle 14, While the other end extends beyond one of the end walls of the box and is provided with a bearing bracket 15. Rotatably mounted in the bearing 15 is an upl Specincatlon of Letters Patent.

right shaft 16 carrying at its upper end a or signal 17 and having fixed to its lower end a pinion 18. Slidably mounted in guides 20 carried by the platform 10 is an actuating rod 21 provided at its end adjacent the handle 111 with a finger receiving eye 22 and formed at its opposite end with a rac-lr engaging the pinion 18 to actuate the same and in turn rotate the signal `shaft to move the flag l? into and out of signaling position as the rod 21 is moved in opposite directions. In order that the lid 12 may be swung to open position as the box is moved to extend forwardly from the upright as illustrated in Fig. 2, there is pivoted to said lid one end of a rod 24, the other end thereof being connected by a universal pivot 8 with the other edge of the plate 6. Thus by grasping and pulling forwardly on the handle 111 the mail carrier may bring the box within convenient reach for the collection and delivery of mail matter, the lid being at the same time opened as will be readily understood.
If mail to be deposited in the box the carrier will insert his finger through the eye 22 when grasping the handle and move the actuating 4rod 21 so as to dispose the flag 1'? in signaling position. As it is desirable to return the box to its normal or retracted position out of the path of vehicles passing along the road, there is provided a relatively strong coil spring 25 which is connected at one end to the box proper and at its other end to the lid 12. Thus when moving the box to extended position, the spring 25 will be placed under tension by the opening of the lid 12 and will by reason of its contractile tendency serve, when the handle 141 is released, to retract the box and its related mechanism and at the 'same time to close the lid 12 as will be readily understood.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a supporting plate, a main arm mounted on a vertical pivot at one edge of the plate to swing only in a horizontal plane, and a secondary arm loosely pivoted at the other edge thereof to swing and also to rise and fall; of a box rigidly carried by the free end of the main arm, and a lid hinged to the box and pivoted to the other end of the secondary arm.
2. The combination with an upright support having a top plate, a main arm mounted on a vertical pivot at one edge of the plate,
and a secondary arm looseiy pivoted at the In testimony whereof I aiix my signature other edge thereof; of a. box rigidly carried in the presence of two witnesses. by the free end Of the malin arm, 2L
to one edge of the box and pivoted to the 5 other end of the secondary arm, a spring Witnesses:
throwing the lid normallyl closed, and a M. P. H. LEDDY, handle on the box. W. JAMESON.
