Coon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Strafford and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in g'l'illClG-IS and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with metal edged tools, such as scissors or the like and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the grinding element is mounted for rotation and is driven through the 'medium ofa motor.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a base which rotatably supports a grindingelement together with a wort holder adjustaloly supported by the base.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a work holder together with a removable member coacti'ng with the work holder to facilitate the protection of the required bevel upon the cutting edge upon the blades of scissors or other tools.
Furthermore. it is an object of the inven tion to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a base provided with means whereby it may be readily clamped to a suitable support to gether with a rotatable grinding element supported iy the base and driven through the medium of a motor and wherein said grinding element has a braking means coacting therewith for regulating the rotation thereof.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and a"- rangement of the several parts of my improved grinder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise nore convenient and advantageous for use as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a grinder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through my improved grinder as herein dis closed;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. at is a view in perspective of the main work support or extension carried by the slide as herein included.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings B denotes a base or block of predetermined dimensions and configuration and which has suitably secured to its under surface the bracket 1 substantially L-shape in form and threaded through the free end portion of the foot of said bracket 1 is a clamping screw By this arrangement it will be at once self-evident that the base or block may be readily and conveniently anchored to a suitable support in accordance with the occasions of practice.
The opposite end portions of the base or block B are provided with the upstanding wings or end members 3 and suitably secured to the inner face of one of said wings or end members 3 is a gear 4- driven in a conventional manner through the medium of the sprin 5.
S denotes a shaft rotatably supported by the wings or members 3 and positioned therebetween and said shaft is provided. with a gear 6 in mesh with the gear 4 whereby said shaft is driven through the medium of the gear 4 Onev end of the shaft S is provided at its axial center with a reduced trunnion '7 which seats within a recess produced in the inner face of one of the wings or members 3 and said shaft at its opposite end and at the axial center thereof is provided with a socket 0r recess 8 which receives an end portion of a pin 9 movably insertible through the second wing or member 3.
Pivotally engaged as at 10 with the inner face of one of the wings or members 8 is an end portion of a brake arm 11 and hingedly connected with the opposite end portion of the brake arm 11 is a second brake arm 12. Opposed faces of the arms 11 and 12 are provided with registering recesses 14 adapted to receive an end portion of the shaft S and it will at once be se1fevident that by imparting relative movement to the brake arms 11 and 12 the rotation of the shaft S through the medium of the gear 4 may be readily regulated. Loosely disposed through the free end por tion of the arm 12 and in threaded engage ment with the arm 11 at its pivoted end portion is the clamping screw 15 or the like whereby the desired coaction of the arms 11 and 12 with the shaft S may be effected.
Fixed to the shaft S is the grinding wheel G and the upper surface of the base or block B at a point below the wheel G is provided with the transversely disposed groove 16 in which is arranged the slide 17. Secured to the slide 17 is an end portion of an upwardly directed arcuate arm 18 terminating in the outwardly directed extension 19 and which extension 19 serves as a support for the work. It will be self-evident that by proper adjustment of the slide 17', the work upon the extension or support 19 may be properly engaged with the wheel G to readily compensate for the wear of the wheel G. The outer end of the extension or support 19 at opposite sides thereof is provided with the inwardly directed lips 20 underlying the extension or support 19 and which is adapted to receive an arm of the auxiliary work support A. The support It as herein disclosed comprises two arms 21 converging toward their free ends and which have their inner ends connected by the intermediate portion When the support A is not in use one of the arms 21 is engaged with the lips 20 to position the support A below the extension 19. hen it is desired to employ the support A the arms 21 are engaged with the lips 20 in a manner to position the second arm 21 above the extension or support 19 and which -results in said second arm being inclined downwardly toward the wheel G so that the proper bevel may be formed on the edge of the tool upon which the wheel G is operated. The use of the support A is of particular advantage in sharpening the blades of scissors.
The spring 5 is adapted to be wound up by the cran 23 or through the medium of any other means which may be employed with convenience and facility.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a grinder constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susseptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason 1 do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a base provided with upstanding members, a shaft rotatably supported by said members, means for rotating the shaft, a grinding element fixed to the shaft, a slide engaged with the base, a work support carried by the slide, and an auxiliary work support removably engaged with the first named work support, the auxiliary work support including an arm inclined downwardly toward the grinding element when said auxiliary work support is in working position upon the first named support.
2. A device of the class described comprising a movable grinding element and work support positioned adjacent thereto and provided with inwardly directed lips underlying said support, and an auxiliary work support consisting of two converging arms connected one to the other, either of said arms being engaged with the lips of the first support for holding the auxiliary support in either working or inoperative position.
