Such devices have hitherto consisted of a lift valve or turning plug having their seats made integral with the discharge pipe, or connected directly thereto by screw threads or other means, a screw cap being located at the lower end of the discharge pipe by which means any leakage through the valve will be retained in the discharge pipe, which extends below the tank and in many. instances below the car sills, to permit the application and removal of the screw cap or toattach a hose to draw of]? the contents. In the event of an accident to the tank car, such'as derailment of the car, or the shifting of the tank on the underframe or other causes, the discharge pipe, which, as stated before, projectsbelow the bottom of the tank, is liable to become damaged or broken, in fact these pipes are frequently broken, and breakages cause the valves to unseat with a consequent leakage and loss of contents of the tank, and should the tank contain lading of an inflammable nature. there is an additional. risk of damage and loss by fire.
An object of this invention is to make an arrangement of tank valve, valve seat and discharge pipe which will avoid the disadvantages above referred to and still be s1mple and inexpensive.
A furtherobject of this invention 1s to construct and apply the discharge pipe to the tank in such a manner that'in the event of the discharge pipe being accidentally bent or broken, the valve and seat,- and their positions relative to each other, will not be disturbed, with the result that the contents of the tank will not be permitted toescape from the tank as the result of such accident.
Another object of the invention is. to provide a discharge pipe and screw cap entirely separate and independent from the valve and valve seat, but so arranged that there is no difference in the operationfrom devices in which the parts are integral.
' Another Ob ect of the invention is to provide an arrangement of the discharge pipe,
valve seat and valve in which, when the discharge pipe gets broken, leakages through the valve can be collected by putting a cap or plug at the lower end of the valve seat, or a hose may. be attached to the lower end of the valve seat to draw off the contents of the tank and thus make the tank serviceable until a new discharge pipe can be provided, all of which greatly add to the safety of transportation and to facilities for discharge of lading.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters refer to like parts, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portionof the interior of a tank provided with the valve,
valve seat and discharge pipe of this invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on'thev longitudinal center line of the tank, showingthe valve, valve seat and discharge pipe. Fig. 3 is a cross section of a portion of the tank taken through the valve, valve seat and -discharge pipe,and Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on the longitudinal center line of the tank, showing the application of this invention to a different type of valve and valve seat.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, 1 indicates portion of the plate forming the shell of the tank, whichmay be of cylindrical or any preferred shape and carried on the usual under-frame and wheeled trucks.

valve 5 in any preferredmanner, said stem extendingupwardly through the interior of the-tank and equipped with suitableoperat in means. 11 indicates the discharge pipe w-ich is shown as having a' taperlng portion 12, provided with a flange 13, by which it is secured to the tank .plate 1 by any suitable means. At its lower end it is rovided with a portion 14 having a screw t read .15 formed therein by means of which the screw cap 16 is secured to the end of the discharge plpe.
The downwardly extending portion 6 of the valve seat member 3 is preferably provided with a suitable screw thread 17 with which the cap member 16 is adapted to engage, so that in the; event of the discharge pipe 11 being broken, the cap member 16 can be applied and forma tight seal to prevent loss of any lading which may leak past the valve and seat.
- Further in the event of .breakageof the discharge pipe, a hose coupling may be attached to the screw threaded portion 17 ofthe valve seat member 3, thus enabling the contents of the tank to be drawn off. and the tank to be made serviceable until a new discharge pipe can be applied.
Fig. 4 shows in section the application of this invention to another type of valve and valve seat, the valve being provided with an upwardly extending guide portion 18 adapted to be guided in an upwardly extending cage-like portion 19 of the valve seat. This valve seat also is provided with a cap member 20, and spring 21. which are intended to assist in retaining the valve on its seat. The lower portion of the valve seat member is furnished with a screw threaded end and. cap, as described in connection with the construction shown-in Figs. 2 and 3.
' It will be readily observed tliat in the construction just described there is no direct connection whatever between any portion of the discharge pipe and the valve seat, and that in the event of the discharge pipe being broken, such breakage will not be,
likely to affect the valve and seat.
I do not limit the invention, however, to the use of the two types of valves and valve seatsshown in the drawings-as it is plain that any other types may be used without de a-rting from my invention.
Vhat I claim is:
1. The combination with a tank of a discharge opening in the bottom of said tank, a va ve seatmember and valve for closing said opening, said valve seat member being secured to the outside of said tank, and a discharge pipe, separate from and independent of said valve seat member, secured to said tank independently of and inclosing said valve seat member. said valve seat member extending into said discharge pipe.

The combination with a tank, of a discharge opening inthe bottom of said tank, a valve seat member and valve for closing said opening, and a discharge pipe, separate from and independent of said valve seat member, secured to the outside of said tank independently of and inclosing said valve seat member, said valve seat member extending into said discharge pipe. 3. The combination with a tank of a discharge opening in the bottom of said tank, a valve seat member and valve for closing said opening, said valve seat being secured to the outside of said tank, and a discharge pipe, separate from and independent of said val've seat member, secured to' the outside of said tank independently of and inclosing said valve seat member, said valve seat member extending into said discharge pipe.
4. The combination with a tank of a discharge opening in the bottom of said tank, a valve seat member and valve for closing said opening, said valve seat being secured to the outside of said tank, and a discharge pipe, separate from and independent of said valve seat" member, secured to the outside of said tank independently of and surroundseat member, said valve seat member extending into said discharge pipe.
(5. The combination with a tank of a discharge opening in the bottom of said tank, a valve seat member'and valve for closing said opening, a cap for closing said valve seat member, and a discharge pi e secured to said tank independently of an inclosing said valve seat member.
