To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH OSTERMAN,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at .the templet.
Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Key- Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in key cutting machines, and has for its object to provide a simple and effective machine of this description by the use of which a key may be accurately reproduced from a blank. I
A further object of my invention is to so construct such a machine that the whole portion of cutting a key blank is performed by simply moving the cutter carrier upward usiilig the key to be duplicated as a templet, 2111C A still further object of my invention is to provide for holding both the key and the blank in an effective manner while giving the templet follower and the cutter free access to the key and the blank.
With these ends in view, myinvention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims. 1
In order that those 'skilledin the art to which this inventionappertains, may understand how to make and use the same I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which v f Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine made in accordance with my improvement, a portion being broken away to more clearly show the construction thereof.

In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 1 represents a table or frame supported upon the legs 2, and projecting upward from this table-are the standards 3 through which passes the rod 4.
' 5 represents a carrier having the slot 6 therein through which-the rod 4: passes in order thatthe carrier may have a limited, longitudinal movement over the table and this slot is enlarged as indicated at 7 at the forward end thereof in order that when this enlargement registers with the rod- 1 the carrier will be held against forward movement by the vibration of the machine. A
thumb screw 8 is threaded through the heel of the carrier so that its inner end passes into the slot 6 in order that the limit of the forward travel of the carrier may be adjustable by the end of said screw coming in contact with the rod 4: as will be readily understood.
9 represents a shaft which is journaled in the bearings 10 and 11 upon the carrier and this shaft has secured upon its rear end the belt pulley 12 and a fly wheel 13, the belt pulley being here shown as adapted for use in connection witha round belt which may receive its power from any suitable source.
Upon the forward end of the shaft 9 is secured acutter 14 the edges of which are beveled as clearly indicated in'Fig. 2, and
the angle of this bevel is intended to be such 16 represents the templet follower which is secured to the head of the carrier by means of the screw 17 passing through a hole 18 formed in the follower, said screw being held in place by the jam nut 19 under which is placed a washer 20. In order that the follower may be accurately adjusted ,to properly aline with the cutter and the posts 21 are set in the head on each side of the follower and have threaded therethrough the thumb screws 22 the ends of dental contact therewith, and a' guard '24 is secured to this housing projecting downward in front of the cutter and as a further protectionthis guard is held in place by operating handle 25.' Mounted upon the table 1 in any suitable manner is a double clamp 26 which consists of a body 27 having a movable jaw 28 adapted, toslide upon the bar 29 and through this-j aw passes the shank 30 of the clamp screw its inner end 31 being threaded into the hole 32 so that when this clamp screw is manipulated by the hand wheel 33 the jaw may be moved upward or away from the bodyas occasion requires. A coil spring 34 is set in the recess 35 formed in the body so as to cause the jaw to move outward when the screw is backed off.
The'body ofthe clamp is. formed therewith, the clamping surface 36 which extends upward above said body and has the corrugations 37 formed therein and the jaw 36 also has a clamping surface '38 extending above the top of the jaw having corrugations 39 therein which correspond with the corrugations 37 for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
A jaw 40'is also adapted to slide upon the bar 29'and the body of the clamp and is manipulated by the screw41 and hand wheel 42 in the same manner as above described in connection with the aw 28 a spring 43 being'lo'cated in the recess 44 for forcing this jaw outward. This jaw is provided witha clamping surface 45 projecting above the top of the jaw having corrugations 46 therein'which register with the corrugations 47 formed in the upper edge of the clamping surface48 of the body 27.
From this description it will be seen that the blank to be cut may be brought into the proper-position relative to'the cutter 14 by being clamped between the surfaces 45 and 48 and the key '50 which is to serve as a templet is brought into proper position relative to the-follower by being clamped between the surfaces 36 and 38 and when so clamped the notches in a standard key will register with the notches 37 and 39 and as the notches 46 and 47 are in alinement with the first named notches the cutter will be permitted tocut into the blank a depth represented by the depth of these notches, which arrangement provides a larger holding surface against the blank and the key by the jaws than would otherwise be the case.-
therein, which latter protects the pin 53 from the side of the carrier, which pin while permitting the free swinging-niovemnt of the carrier within certain limitations prevents it frombeing swung upward to a degree suificient to materially alter the ten, sion of the belt running upon the pulley 12.
To prevent the cutter from being loweredi sufliciently to cut into the clamp I provide an adjusting screw 54 which is threaded into the underside of the carrier its lower end being adapted to bear against the table, and in order that the carrier may be held rigid as to sidewise movements guide posts 55 project upward from the table upon each side thereof, said posts being intended to fit snugly against the finished surfaces 56 formed upon the sides of the carrier.
In practice the objects of my improvement will be obviously as follows y The key to be duplicated is firmly secured between the surfaces 36 and 38 and the blank to be cut is likewise firmly secured between the surfaces 45 and 48 as before described when the follower is brought over the key the operator by manipulating the carrier causes said follower to travel in light contact with the notched edge of the key which will cause a corresponding movement of the cutter over theupper edge of the blank cutting notches in said *blankexact duplicates of the notches in the key and this process may be carried on in steps as for instance the cutter may be drawn across the blank with the follower not quite in contact with the key so as to cut a portion of the metal of the blankaway and by repetition of this movement bringing the follower into final contact with thekey preventing undue strain to both the cutter machine and throwing less bur on the blank.
My improved machine not only cuts a blank in exact duplicationbut a key which is used as a templet and the operation may be performed in a fraction of a minute representing great efiiciency and economy of time. i V j The follower asclearly shown in Figs. ;6 and 7 has its lower end ofi'set and the bottom Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. In a machine of the character described, a table, a carrier mounted upon said table so as to have a swinging, sliding movement, a shaft j ournaled. upon said carrier, means for revolving said shaft, a cutter carried by one end of said shaft, a double clamp having two sides of clamping surfaces one in a higher plane than the other the surfaces in the higher plane adapted to clamp a blank and the surface in the lower plane adapted to clamp a pattern key and a follower secured to the carrier and adapted to travel upon the pattern key.
2. In a machine of the character described, a table, a carrier mounted upon said table so as to have a swinging, sliding movement, a shaft journaled upon said. carrier, means for revolving said shaft, a cutter carried by one end of said shaft, a double clamp having two sides of clamping surfaces one in a higher plane than the other the surfaces in the higher plane adapted to clamp a blank and the surfaces in the lower plane adapted to clamp a pattern key, a follower secured to the carrier and adapted to travel upon the pattern key, and means for limiting the swinging and sliding movement of the carrier.
3. A key cutting machine comprising a Y table, a pair of standards projecting upward from said table, a carrier having an elongated slot therein, a rod passing through V the pair of standards and said slot, means for adjusting the working length of the slot, a shaft journaled upon the carrier,
means for revolving said shaft, a cutter removably secured to the forward end of the shaft, a housing for partially inclosing said cutter, a follower adjustably secured to the carrier, means for clamping a pattern key, and a blank in operated position relative to said cutter and follower.
4:. A key cutting machine comprising a table, a pair of standards projecting upward from said table, a carrier having an elongated slot therein, a rod passing through the pair of standards and said slot, means for adjusting the working length of the slot, a shaft journaled upon the carrier, means for revolving said shaft, a cutter removably secured to the forward end of the shaft, a housing for partially inclosing said cutter, a follower adjustably secured to the carrier,
means for clamping a pattern key, a blank in operated position relative to said cutter and follower, and means for limiting the downward swing of the carrier.
5. In combination with a key cutting machine, a double clamp consisting of a body and two jaws, means for adjusting said jaws, two pairs of clamping surfaces, each pair being in a different vertical plane, and corrugations formed along the upper edges of said clamping surfaces.
6. In combination with a key cutting machine of the character described, a carrier, a follower, a screw for attaching said follower to the carrier by passing through an opening in said follower, and means for adjusting said follower.
7. In combination with a key cutting machine of the character described, a carrier, a follower, a screw for attaching said follower to the carrier by passing through an opening in said follower, and two posts set upon each side of the follower, a thumb screw threaded through each of said posts, and adapted to bear against the sides of the follower for adjusting the latter.
