Application filed March 4, 1919. Serial No. 280,634.
This invention relates to attachments for carburetors and more particularly to a filter attachment for separating impurities from the gasolene so that the sediment and other objectionable matter will be prevented from entering the carbureter when gasolene is supplied thereto.
The invention further aims to provide an improved filter which will contain a quantity of gasolene and a number of screening elements arranged to obstruct the passage of the impurities when the level of the quantity of gasolene rises in the filter so that the gasolene which is supplied to the carbureter will be free of any impurities.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation of the device constructed in accordance with my invention and showing its application to a oarbureter.

Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which like numerals of reference indicate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, the filter comprises a cylindrical container 1 which is considerably elongated as shown and has both ends closed by removable caps 2 and 3. The removable bottom cap 2 is provided with a pet cock 4 which may be opened to drain the contents of the container. Near the upper end of the container is a branch pipe 5 projecting from one side and adapted to be connected by means of a coupling 6 to the supply pipe 7 which leads to the carburetor 8. At the opposite side of the container, at a point considerably below the branch pipe 5 is an inlet port 9 which is in communication with a feed pipe 10, the latter being provided with a valve ll by which the supply of gasolene may be governed.
An annular flange or shaft 12 is provided on the interior of the container 1 at a point above the port 9 but considerably below the opening leading into the branch pipe 5, and this shelf supports a filter element designated in its entirety by the numeral 13. This filter element consists of a plurality of screens 14 arranged in superposed relation and adapted to fit snugly within the container 1. Each screen is provided with a central aperture through which a screw threaded rod 15 is extended and the latter has mounted thereon, a number of spacing blocks 16 which serve to hold the screens in spaced relation. The blocks 16 are mounted so that they may be readily removed for removing the screens when desired. The upper end of the bolt is provided with a ring 18 which may be grasped when the cover 3 is removed so that the entire filter element may be removed from the container. The lower end of the rod or bolt is provided with a removable retaining nut 19 which binds against the lowermost screen and maintains all of the screens in their properly spaced relation.
In operation when the device is attached to a carbureter as shown, the gasolene will be fed through a pipe 10 into the container 1 which will fill with gasolene until the level rises high enough to permit the gasolene to flow through the branch pipe 5 and the supply pipe 7 into the carbureter. When the level of gasolene reaches the lowermost screen, any impurities floating on the gasolene will be prevented from rising any farther and it will be obvious that the plurality of screens will prevent any sediment or other impurities from rising above the uppermost screen so that the gasolene supplied to the branch pipe 5 will be in the best possible condition for being fed in to the carbureter. By having a quantity of the gasolene always in the lower portion of the container 1 the sediment has an opportunity to settle to the bottom and the lower portion of the container, therefore, acts as a trap for the heavier particles of sediment. This trap may be readily cleaned by removing the cap 2.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the preferred or approved form of my invention. I desire it to be understood that I may make such changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials dimensions et cetera, as may prove expedient and tall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A filter of the cha acter described, comprising a cylindrical container having an in let and an outlet communicating with the interior of the container in different planes, whereby one is disposed above the other, a straining element comprising a plurality of superposed screens arranged in the space between the inlet and outlet openings, a central rod extending through the said screens and equipped with spacing elements interposed between the screens and mounted on the said rod whereby the said screens will be held in spaced relation, means mounted on the rod to bind the spacing elements against the screens whereby they will be rigidly held in properly spaced relation, and means to maintain the said screening elements in position between the said openings in the container.
