To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. NICHOLS, a SllbJGCt of the King'of Great Britain, r'esiding at St. Louis, in city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new Other objects and advantages will be apparent throughout the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of mydevice and wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a boat embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan View thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig.- 1, and 1 Fig. 4 is an enlarged section showing a slightly modified form.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings the numeral 10 indicates a T bar, having the cross bar of the T arranged downwardly. The ends of the bar 10 are bent upwardly to form the stem and stern post of the boat. 1 1
The sides of the boat are formed from a die-shaped sheet of metal 11 provided at its bottom and ends with the flanges 12 adapted to coa-ct with the stem portion of the T bar. These flanges 12 are of the same depth as the stem portion of the T bar and engage the head of the T upon its upwardly disposed surface.
At the upper edges, the side members 11 are provided'with flanges 13, which flanges as clearly shown in Fig; 2 are widest at the waist of the boat and contract toward the stem and stern post thereof. Plates 14: are
provided having horizontal flanges 15 adapted to be secured to the flange 13 of the sides 11 by means of welding or the like. In the form shown in Fig. 4, these flanges are secured together by means of rivets, 16. The plate 14 is widest at the waist of the boat and tapers upwardly toward the stem and stern post thereof, the bottom edge of the plate being secured to the side members-as at 17 by welding or the like.
It will be seen that an air space 18 is formed by the plate 14 flanges 13 and 15 of the side members 11 and that these air spaces have their greatest depth at the waist of the boat. The plates 14 are slightly concaved as at 19.
It will be seen that tilting of the body brings the air spaces into contact with the water and that the greater the angle of tilt the greater amount of air surface which is provided for contact.
As many changes are possible in shape, size and arrangement of the various parts shown if possible without in any manner departing from the spirit of the invention, I do not limit myself to the specific construction herein shown but may make any such changes without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of, the subjoined claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a boat, a keel portion comprising an inverted metallic T bar having its ends-bent upwardly to form the'stem and stern post of the boat, and side members each formed of a single sheet of metal and having a vertical flange of the same length as the vertical portion of said T bar, said flanges engaging the upper side of the head of the T and the sides of said vertical portion and being secured thereto by welding horizontally disposed flanges on the upper edges of said side sections and plates adapted for attachment to said flanges and to said side sections to form an air pocket.
2. In a boat, a keel portion comprising an inverted metallic T bar having its ends bent upwardly to form the stem and stern post of the boat, and side members each formed of a single sheet of metal and having a vertical flange of the same length as the vertical portion of said T- bar, said flanges engaging the upper side'of the head of the T and the sides of said vertical portion and being sehers, said side plates having their lower edges secured to the outside of said side members, said side plates being widest at the waist of the boat and tapering upwardly to the stem and stern.
3. In a boat, a keel portion comprising a metallic bar having one end bent upwardly tov form the stem of the boat, and side members formed of sheets of metal and having Vertical flanges, said flanges being secured to said metallic bar, horizontally disposed flanges on the upper edges of said side members, and plates adapted for attachment to said horizontally disposed flanges and to said side members to form an air pocket.
