DANIEL E. SIPEIGHER, 0F URBANA, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE CYCLONE MANUFAC- TUBING COMPANY, OF URBANA, INDIANA;
GHICK'FEEDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1920.
Application filed March as, 1919. Serial No. 285,727.
fl '0 all who 21bit may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL E. Srmormn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Urbana, in the county of Wabash and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Chick-Feeders, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to poultry feeders and has for its object to provide a device of this character especially designed for feeding chicks, which shall be of such improved and simplified construction as to permit it to be economically produced.
.s-rnother object is the provision of a feeder especially designed for the use of small chicks, it is provided with an entrance open ing over which is arranged a guard preventing access of larger chicks to the feeder.
With these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds the invention comprises the novel features of construction, accompanied by elements and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described in the following specification and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the improved feeder,
Fig. 2 represents a fragmental transverse sectional view on the lines 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 represents a fragmental horizontal sectionalview on the line 3--8 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 represents a fragmental horizontal sectional view on the lines fhl of Fig. 2,
Fig. 5 represents a detailed section through the binding strip prior to the application of pressure thereto, and
Fig. 6 represents a fragmental plan view of the end wall blank.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numerals 5 indicate companion end members constructed of solid sheet metal of such thi kness as to lend requisite strength and rigidity to the feeder and which are provided along the upper and vertical edges with inwardly directed supporting flanges 6 and 7. A cover constructed of Wire screen of adequate mesh is arranged between the end members 5 and is bent to provide the top and side portions 8 and 9, respectively. which abut the end members 5 and underlie the flanges 6 and 7.
Headed split pins or rivets 10 are inserted through apertures of the flanges 6 and 7 and through the interstices of the screen covering 9 and circular plates 11 are slipped over the split terminals of the pins to prevent withdrawal of the latter through the screen.
The covering 8 is constructed of screen affording interstices of such a size as to permit certain types of seed to fall therethrough and the lower edges of the side members 9 are boundby a strip of metal 12 which is doubled along a longitudinal line to provide a member substantially U-shaped in cross section embracing the edges of the side wall and secured thereto by turning the edge of the screen back under a depending flange 13 carried by the outer portion of the strip 12. In this manner the edges of the binding strip and side portions 9 are rigidly interlocked and secured against separation and the terminals of the strips are extended beneath the flanges 7 at the ends of the end members 5.
One end member 5 is formed with an entrance opening 14: permitting access of the chicks to the feeder and the material of the end wall lying contiguous to the opening 14k is bent inwardly as at 15 to form a support for a substantially U-shaped guard member 16 which is secured thereto by rivets 17 or similar substantial means and is disposed in a vertical position to restrict the size of the opening and prevent entrance of large chicks.
What I claim is:
l. A chicken feeder including a top and side and end walls, one of the end walls provided with an entrance opening, the material of the end wall contiguous to the open. ing bent inwardly at right angles, and a guard secured to the inwardly bent portions to prevent large chicks from entering the feeder.
2. A chicken feeder including a top and side and end walls, one of the end walls provided with an entrance opening, the material of the end wall contiguous to the upper and lower edges of the opening bent in wardly at right angles and a U shaped guard secured to the inwardly bent portions to prevent large chicks from entering the feeder.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
DANIEL E. SPEICHER.
