, CRAN'KING n vroE ronnorononrrns.
To all whom it may'concern: 1
Be it known that I, BERT D. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gallup, in the county of McKinley and State of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cranking Devices for Automobiles, of which the followving is a specification. 1
This invention relates tonew and useful improvements in cranking devices for automobiles and the principal object of the mvention is to provide means for cranking the magneto to send the current into the motor to start the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for sending the current to but one of the cylinders and also to provide means on the drive shaft of the magneto whereby said shaft will be driven in but one direction by the engine.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efiicient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost. I
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding partsthroughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of my invention applied to an automobile.
Fig. 2 is a front view. 7
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view through the coupling gears of the drive shaft.
Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of these gears.
Fig. 6 is a detailview of the insulated disk for the timing device.
In these views 1 indicates the magneto provided with the drive shaft 2 which is connected with the motor by the gears 3. The magneto is connected with a timing device 4 by the wires 5 and said timing device is connectedwith the spark plugs by the wires 6. This timing device is located Specification of Lettersratentf Patented Mar.16,1920. Application filed. September 6,1918. serial mama; I
on a shaft 7 whichcarries a pinion 8 which is connected Wit/l1: the gear 3 .by the pinion 9. The timing device consists of the two insulated. plates 10 carrying'the brushes 11 to which the wires are connected. An insulated disk 12 is located between said plates 10 and this plate carries a brass plate13 of curvedform so arranged as to bridge the gap between one .of the pairs *of brushes I so that when the disk is rotated the circuit will be completed between the brushes in succession so as to permit a spark to pass to each of the cylinders in turn. The drive shaft 2 is formed of two portions, one of which carries the cup gear 14 having an interior tooth 15 and the other carries a disk 16 having a spring pawl 17 thereon. The tooth and pawl are so arranged that when the engine rotates the shaft 2 in one direction the pawl will engage with the tooth and thus actuate the magneto but when the cup gear 14 is rotated in an opposite direction the pawl will simply slip over the tooth.
The means for actuating the magneto by hand to start the engine consists ofa shaft 18 having a gear 19 at its end adapted to mesh with the cup gear 14 to rotate the same and to actuate the magneto. The other end of the shaft is slidably mounted in the dash 20 so that the gear 19 can be moved into and out of mesh with the gear 14. The gears are normally held out of mesh by means of the spring 21. The shaft is provided with a handle 22 by which it may be moved longitudinally. The shaft is rotated by means of a crank 23 located in the dash and having a beveled gear 24 there- A spark will be made in this cylinder as long as the device is actuated. As soon as an explosion takes place and the engine starts the magneto will be actuated by the engine so that the hand device may be thrown out of operative position. I will use a suitable form of priming device to prime the cylinders.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In combination with an internal combustion engine and its magneto, of a twopart drive shaft for the magneto, means for driving said shaft from the engine, clutch means connecting the two parts together, the clutch element on themagneto part of the shaft having gear teeth on its outer periphery, a longitudinally movable shaft, a circular gear thereon engaging with said teeth when the shaft is in one position, means for rotating the shaft by hand and means for moving the shaft longitudinally by hand.
2. In combination with an internal combustion engine and its magneto, means for driving the engine, a two-part drive shaft for the magneto, means for driving said shaft from the engine, clutch means connecting the two parts together, a clutch element on the magneto part of the shaft having gear teeth on its outer periphery, a longitudinally movable shaft, a circular gear thereon engaging said teeth when the shaft is in one position, means for rotating the shaft by hand to actuate the magneto continuously until the charge under compression in a cylinder of the engine is exploded and means for moving the shaft longitudinally by hand to bring the gears into and out of mesh. g
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
BERT D. RICHARDS.
