Description

1. y. wlcKsTnoM. ROAD SCRAPER.
APPLICATION FILED AUGJ i919.

JOSEPH H. WICKS'IROM, OF BERESFORD, SOUTH DAKOTA.
ROAD-SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1920.
Application filed August 1, 1919. Serial No. 314,767.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. WICK- s'rRoM, a citizen of the United States, re'
siding at Beresford, in the county of Union and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Scrapers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and igures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in road working machines, and especially in the provision of a scraper convertible for use into a conveyance with runners for carrying material of different kinds.
The invention comprises various details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form apart of this application, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view showing the use of the device as a road scraper.
F ig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. l.
VFig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing my machine reversed and mounted to be drawn on runners.
F ig. i is a detail perspective view of one of the runners, and F ig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numerals:
l and 2 designate parallel blades of the scraper which are preferably set at slight inclinations to have a drawing cut when used. The blades are fastened to the opposite angled edges of an intermediate plate 3, preferably made of metal, the ends of which are contracted and project beyond the ends of the cutting blades. Hooks 4 are fastened to said projecting ends and to which a pulling chain 5 is adapted to be connected. The runners are designated by numeral 6 and have angled ends 7 which are bolted or otherwise secured to the blades.
When the apparatus is used as a road scraper, it will be noted that the plate 3 will serve as a bottom for a shallow receptacle upon which stones or other weighted material may be placed to hold the scraper to its work, and in Fig. 3 I have shown the apparatus inverted in which the blades form the side walls for a box adapted to contain stone, designated by numeral 8, or other commodity, as for instance material to be mixed for use in road making.
Suitable end pieces, detail of one of which is shown in Fig. 4, have angled ends 10 fastened to the sides by riveting or otherwise, in the manner shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, said ends, however, being dispensed with when the device is utilized as a scraper.
By the provision of an apparatus embodying the feature of my invention it will be noted that a convenient apparatus is provided which will serve its purpose for various kinds of road making, such as scraping the road, and when the apparatus is reversed may be used for holding road material, or as a receptacle for mixing concrete or other material, the runners serving as a. convenient means whereby the apparatus may be drawn from place to place.
What I claim to be new is:A
l. A road making apparatus consisting of scraper blades, a plate having opposite longitudinal edges angled and fastened to the faces of saidV blades intermediate the opposite edges forming the bottom for a receptacle to hold material, runners having bent portions, said runners being fastened at their ends to the oppositely disposed blades.
2. A road making apparatus consisting of scraper blades, a plate having opposite longitudinal edges angledand fastened tothe faces of said blades intermediate the opposite edges forming the bottom for a receptacle to hold material, runners having bent portions, said runners being fastened at their ends to the oppositely disposed blades, the ends of said plate being contracted and projecting beyond the ends of the blades, and a pulling chain adapted to be connected to said ends.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
JOSEPH H. WICKSTROM.
