ELECTRIC SWITCH,
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar, 16, 1920,
Application filed April 2, 1917. Serial No. 159,368.
use the same.
This invention relates to an electric switch, an object of the invention being to provide a switch which will have its live terminals so protected that a person cannot accidentally place the fingers upon said terminals. I
Another object of the invention is to provide a switch which will have the connecting blades entirely removed from the terminals so that they will not be in any way connect ed therewith when the switch is open.
Another object of the invention is to provide an inclosure for the switch which will prevent it from being tampered with when in use and which may be locked with an ordinary padlock either in the open or the closed position of the inclosure as may be desired.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.v
.An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawings in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout, but we are aware that there may be modifications thereof.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the switch. with the cover open and the terminal guard removediherefrom for the purpose of illustration.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the switch on a slightly larger scale than Fig. 1, showing the terminal guard in place, and the cover partly broken away.
Fig. 3 is. aview of the switch looking from the left of Fig. 1 in edge elevation, the switch box being in section and a portion of the cover being broken away for the purpose of illustration.
The numeral 1 represents a shallow box having an ear at 2 with a hole toreceive the hasp of a padlock. A hinge at 3 connects the box 1 with the cover 4, said cover having a lug projecting at 5,'which lug is provided with a hole which registers with the hole in the lug 2 when the cover is closed. Within the box is mounted a well known form of double pole switch carried by a block 6. The'block 6 is suitably connected to the box with screws 7 and 8 and it has inlet contact points 9 and 10 to which the inlet wires 11 and 12 are connected ina well known fiber 17 the sides of which are turned down as indicated at 18 to rest on the bottom of the box at each side while the upper edge thereof is turned upwardly as indicated at 19 in order that it may be connected with the box by means of the screws 20 and 21. This fiber cover has two slots 22 and 23 therein to allow the knifecontact blades 24 and 25 (which are suitably secured to an insulating block 26 carried by the cover 4) to pass through when the cover is closed, and when said cover is closed the terminals 9 and 13 and 10 and 14 are connected together.
On the upper portion of the box there is a hole 28, the object being to provide means whereby the adlock 29 may be used to lock the switc and cover open if desired, since when the adlock is inserted in said hole 28 it will e impossible to close the cover because'the cover fits the base snugly and cannot pass over any enlargement such as the hasp of the padlock. When the switch is closed, the padlock may be inserted through the holes in the two lugs 2 and 5, and the switch cannot be tampered with until the person who has the key removes the padlock. v
In orderto hold the cover shut without the necessity of looking it, a spring 30 is fastened within the lower end of the box, and it'has a knob 31 connected thereto which is adapted to release the spring from the cover when it engages the hole 32. The
switch block is of common porcelain type having holes for the screws 7 and 8, a depression 33 and a slot 34 to receive a securing screw 35.
