Be itknown that I, JOHAN' H. E. Trien- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hollis, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented, certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile.

Accessories, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to automoible accessories, and has for an object to provide a device which is to be supported upon the windshield to shade the eyes of the driver against strong light which may come from any source directly ahead. 7

Another object of the invention isto provide a device of this character in the natureof a sup iprt to be placed upon the upper edge of t e windshield whereby it may be moved from one point to another, and a shade depending from'the support, for the purpose' set forth.

The free end of the shade is'reinforced with a a metal strip 15 having a ring 16 ateach end.

It will be noted that the free end of'the shade may extend through the opening 11 of the casing and be'pulled out to any dlstance desired. Mounted exteriorly of the casing and upon the ends thereof are a pair of hinge plates 17 and 18, the latter being somewhat longer than the other. Hingedly connected to each plate is a guide rod indicated at 19 and 20.

The upper portion of the casing is extended beyond the diametrical side as shown at 21, and hingedly connected to the longi-. tudinal edge thereof is a clamping plate 22,

springs 23 being provided to urge said clamping plate toward the casing.

In use, the device is placed upon the upper edge of the windshield of amotor vehicle, aeroplane,-etc. The flat side of the casin bears against the rear side of the windshleld, and the clampin against the front side 0 t e windshield. The device is thus securely held against accidental dislodgment, but movement of the casing along the windshield is permitted, so that the shade may be properly positioned to be interposed between the source of light against which the driver is to be protected,

19 and 20 depend from the casing and enter the rings 16, and thus serve to hold the shade agalnst flapping, when the device is not in use, or when it is to be stored or shipped, the shade is permitted'to roll up upon the roller to the fullest extent. the strip 15 partly entering the opening 11 of the casing. The ring 16 it will be noted rides up upon the hinge plates 17 and 18 as shown in Fig. 2. The

19 and 20 may now be folded up toward the casing in overlapping relation, and sprung between a pair of resllient fingers 24 which are secured to the reinforcing strip 15 of the shade.

Thus it will be seen that with this device the driver may protect his eyes against thelate 22 bears against artificial light by merely adjusting the shade or by moving the casing along the windshield.

While -I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various a1- terations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts'without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims. T

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. A device of the character described including a casing, a shade roller mounted therein, a shade Wrapped about the roller and having its free end extended through the casing, a pair of guide members hing edly mounted at the ends of the casing and adapted to depend therefrom, a reinforcing strip on the free end of the shade, rings on the ends of the strip to receive the guide members, said guide members being foldable in overlapping relation when the shade is retracted, and a spring clip on said reinforcing strip to receive the folded guide members.

2. A device of the character described including a casing, 'a shade roller mounted therein, a shade Wrapped about the roller and adapted to be extended therefrom, hinge plates secured to the ends of the casing, guide members hingedly connected to said hinge plate, rings connected to the end of the shade adjacent the rnar ins thereof and ackipted to receive the gui e members and to move therealong from one end of the guide member to the other, said guide members being foldable in overlapping relation when the shade is retracted, the rings in said position engaging around the ends of the hinge plate to permit folding movement of the guide members.
