A plate 20 secured to the flue plate 2 extends horizontally therefrom and makes close connection with the upper edge of the baffle plate E. The baffle plates C and E incline upwardly in opposite direction with y thrown downward into the lower portion'of the smoke box and is swept forwardlyby the current into the funnel portion 6 of the ash chute. As the products of combustion reach the lower portion of the battle plate E they are directed forwardly and downwardly by the baffle plate D and are caused to sweep across the lower portion of the smoke box and thence upwardly at the front end thereof when they meet the imperforate baffle plate A and are again deflected rearwardly and downwardly, Any sparks or incandescent particles striking the baffle plate A are deflected downwardly into the lower portion of the smoke box whereas the prodvucts of combustion pass through the open- Y traces of sparks to prevent the escape of the "same into the open air.
" TThe baffle plates B and C are constructed any ashes that may tend to accumulate aboveY baflle plates B and C swung to. one side and; the middle section of the baffle plate E either turned aside or removed, the latter result being` attained by having hooks at the upper edge of the middle section engaging openings in an angle iron 21 at the forward edge of the plate 20. Suitable fastening means are provided for securing the movable sec-y tions ofthe baiiie plates, dicated at 22.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersA Patent is Y,

In a steam boiler provided with a smoke box, a depending baffle plate at the inner or rear end of the smoke box and an upwardly and forwardly inclined perforate baffle plate in the forward portion of the smoke box and havmg close connection at its lower edge t with the lower portion of the depending baffle plate and having close connection at its upper forward edge with the front of the smoke box.v

In a steam boiler provided with a smokeY` box, a plurality of baffle plates disposed within'the smoke box and extending transversely thereof and arranged= at various angles, the intermediate baille plates including movable sections to facilitate `access toA the interior of the smoke box for any de-l sired purpose.v

5, In a steam boiler provided with a smoke box, said smoke box having a smoke stack and a blast pipe in line with each other and a screen between the delivery end of the blast pipe and the receiving end of the smoke` l stack, a baille plate in the lowery portion of the smoke box in line with the blast pipe and inolining slightly to the horizontal in an up ward and rearward direction, van imperforatebaille plate inclining upwardly andA rearwardly from the rear portion of the aforesaid baille plate, a perforate baille plate inclining upwardly and forwardly from the forward edge ofthe first mentioned baille plate and other baffle plates between the upper forward edge of the perforate baffle plate and the front of the smoke box.
