Be it known that l, BENJAMIN O. FANS- LOW, a citizen of the United States, residing in l/Vhite Plains, county of lVestchester, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Check-Protecting Machines, of which the following is a description.
Hlhe invention relates to new and useful improvements in check protecting machines, and more particularly to a machine of the type-known as check writers.
An object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type which. is strong, durable, compact and easily operated, and wherein the various parts are positively held in proper timed relation to each other.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type, wherein the printing wheel is mounted in a cross head reciprocating in a vertical plane, and wherein the printing wheel is turned for bringing any desired row of type in printing position by means of a shaft mounted independently of the cross head, and also wherein means is provided for locking the printing wheel when disconnected from. A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above character with a gage member for controlling the feeding movements of the check, which. member is mounted independently of the cross head and which is locked independently of the printing wheel by means operated with the cross head, that the printing wheel and gage member can not possibly turn and get out of proper timing relative to each other when the p ting wheel is disconnected from the operating means.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a pair of guides which are adjustable on the bed of the machine relative there to and to each other for guiding the cheek through the machine, which permits the check being centered anywhere in the machine relative to the printing position,
With the above objects in view, and others which will be detailed during the course of this description, my invention consists in the parts,features, elements and combinations thereof hereinafter described and claimed.

The foregoing detail description will onile the mode of oifieration to be readily unlcrstood: When the knob 20 is turned the nintinguvheel is turned and simultaneously herewith the feed controlling gage-member it), this being a movement preliminary to printing and feeding and for the purpose of se ing' the proper type-block in position to operate with the platen and the proper gage-shoulder or projection of the gage member in pro position for engagement with the controlling arm 65 oi the feeding .mechanism.
