Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 24, 1920.
Application filed October 3, 1919. Serial No. 328,271.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM Frsous, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alma, in the county of Harlan and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Veterinary Forceps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved veterinary forceps, being particularly designed for delivering sows, and has as one of its principal objects to provide a device of this character which may be readily introduced and manipulated for obtaining a'secure hold upon the young.
The invention has as a further object to provide a device wherein the jaws thereof may be adjustably clamped together and locked in adjusted position.
And the invention has as a still further object to provide a device wherein after the jaws have been clamped together and locked against separation, the outer end of the clamping member employed may be grasped and pulling strain exerted thereon for removing the young without affecting the adjustment of the jaws or causing the separation thereof to release the young.
Other and incidental objects will appear hereinafter.
In the drawings: 7
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the elements of the device disassembled.
In carrying the invention into effect, I employ a main jaw 10 provided with a. shank 11 having a post 12 upstanding therefrom at the outer end of the shank. As particularly shown in Fig. 2, the jaw is preferably formed from a length of suitable resilient wire looped upon itself to provide the jaw with the strands of the wire brought into overlapping abutting relation and secured together to form the shank. At the outer end of the shank, one end portion of the wire is bent upwardly to form the post 12 while the other end portion of the wire is provided with a loop bent about the first end portion at the base of the post. As will be observed. the jaw 10 is dished somewhat or is curved inwardly toward its free end with respect to the shank. In connection with the jaw 10 I'provide a companion jaw 13. Like the jaw 10, this jaw 13 is also formed with a shank 14 at the inner end of which is provided a loop or eye 15. The jaw 13 is also preferably constructed from a length of suitable resilient wire looped to provide the jaw and the strands of the wire brought into overlapping abutting relation and secured together, one end portion of the wire extending beyond and being bent about the other end port on thereof providing the eye or loop 15. The jaw 13 is also longitudinally curved inwardly toward its free end with respect to the shank 14. In connection with the jaws I employ a combined clamping and locking member therefor. This locking member is also preferably formed from a. length of suitable resilient wire and is provided at its inner end with a split ring or loop 16 from which extends a shank 17. Adjacent its outer end, the shank is bent upon itself to provide a series of loops 18 adapted to selectively receive the post 12 while at the outer end of the shank is formed a finger receiving loop 19.
In use, the jaw 10 is first inserted and positioned when the jaw 13 is then inserted and positioned over the jaw 10. The jaws being arranged to engage the young as desired, the loop 15 of the jaw 13 is sl pped over the post 12 so that the jaws will thus be held against relative longitudinal movement. The ring 16 of the combined clamping and locking member is then fitted over the outer ends of the shanks of the jaws when said member is manually shifted forwardly-along said shanks. This forward movement of the member will, of course. result in clamping the jawslO and 13 in engagement with the young when one of the loops 18 is, as shown in Fig. 1. slipped over the post 12, when the jaws will be locked against separation. Consequently, by thus engaging the finger loop 19, a pulling strain may be exerted through the combined clamping and looking member upon the device for removing the young. A series of the loops 18 is employed so as to provide for locking the jaws in diflerent clamping positions of adjustment since the tension which it is desirable to bring to bear upon the jaws will vary in different instances. It will accordingly be seen that I provide a particularly simple device for the purpose set forth while, at the same time, the devicewill. in use, prove thoroughly effective.
in clamped position.
2; A device of the character describedineluding companion jaws having shanks respectively provided at their outer ends with means for connecting the jaws, and a combined clamping and-locking member shiftable along the aw shanks for clamping the jaws together and provided with means to coact with said first mentioned means upon one of the jaws for locking the jaws in clamped position, said member being adapt,-
- ed to provide a handle for exerting a pulling strain "upon the device.
3. A device of the character described including companion jaws one provided with apost and the other provided with means to coact with said post for connecting the jaws, and a combined clamping and locking member shiftable along the jaws for clamping the jaws together and provided with means to coact with said post'for locking the jaws in clamped position.
4. A device ot the character described in cluding companion jaws provided one with a post and the other with means to coact clamped position.
5. A device of the'character described including companion jaws provided one with a post and the other with means to coact with the post for connecting the jaws, and a combined clamping and locking member shiftable along the jaws for adjustably clamping the jaws together and having a shank bent to provide a series of loops adapted to selectively coact with said post for locking the jaws in adjusted clamped position.
6. A device of the character described including companion jaws respectively provided with means for connecting the jaws, and a combined clampin and locking member shiftable along the aws for adjustably clamping the jaws together and provided with means to coact with said first'mentioned means upon one of said jaws for locking the jaws in adjusted clamped position;
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
