To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSIAS FRANK S uY'rn, a citizen of the United States, residmg at Springview, in the county of Keyapaha and distant from the gate, so that the gate can be readily opened and closed, by a person in a vehicle without necessitating the occupant of the vehicle leaving the same to operate the gate.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved gate arranged to slide transversely across the road-way, and having an improved means for sliding the gate so that the same can be operated from a point distant therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved gate arranged to slide transversely across aroad-way and mounted upon a pivoted balance or shifting beam, the inclination of which is adapted to be varied so as to slide the gate across the roadway to open and close the gate.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved means for operating the balance or shifting beam for sliding the gate, and having improved means for loosing the beam against movement dur- 40.

A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved gate of the above character, which is durable and eflicient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
WVith these and other objects inview, the invention consists inthe novel construction, arrangement and. formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described,
claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof in which:

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein vsimllar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 generally indicates the unproved device which includes the gate 2 having the upper rail 3, the lower rail 4, and the end bars 5, and the intermediate panels or bars 6. The upper rail 3 extends rearwardly from the gate for a distance the length ofthe gate and extends at an incline [to the lower rail 4, for a purpose which will hereinafter more fully appear, and this upper rail. 3 has the lower surface thereof rounded and fitted in the grooved peripheries of the rollers 7 rotatably carried by the arms 8 secured to the terminals'of and pro ectmg laterally from the balance or shifting beams 9, which has the downwardly eX- tending supporting arm 10 secured to the central portion thereof. The gate 2 is arranged to slide transversely across the roadway and a gate post 11 is mounted on each side of the roadway and one of the posts is provided with a keeper 12 for receiving the outer end of the gate, when the gate is in its closed position, so as to prevent distortion or lateral movement thereof. A third post 13 is mounted in spaced relation to the gate posts 11 and in direct alinement therewith.
' The balance or shifting beam 9 is mounted intermediate the post 13 and the inner posts 11 and has the lower end of the supporting arm 10 pivotally secured to a standard 14, as at 15. The balance or shifting beam 9 is, as clearly shown, free to swing on the pivot 15, and when the inner end of the same is swung downwardly, the gate will be normally held in closed position owing to the inclination thereof, but when the outer end of the beam is swung downward and the inner end of the same raised, the gate will roll on the rollers 7 carried by the balance beam and across the roadway. The standard 1-1 extends a considerable distance above the posts 13 and 11 and supports a pulley 16 at the upper end thereof around which is trained the pull rope 17, which has one end thereof extended to a post 18 and trained around a pulley 19 carried by the upper end of the same. The post 18 islocated at one side of the gate post 11 and has the terminal thereof provided with a hand grip 20, whereby the rope may be readily. grasped by a person desiring to actuate the gate. The pull rope 17 has a branch rope 21 connected thereto adjacent to the pulley 16 and this-branch rope extends to a post 22 positioned on the opposite side of the gate post 11, and the branch rope is trained around the pulley 24 carried by the post 22 and is provided with a hand grip 25, whereby the same may be readily actuated.
The posts 13 and. the inner post 11 are provided with angle bracket arms26 to form stops for the terminals of the balance or shifting beam 9, so as to prevent the beam from swinging beyond a predetermined point on its pivot. The outer sides of the gate posts 13 and 11 are provided with latches 26 which are pivoted at their upper ends on pivot pins 27. The lower ends of the latches are bent at right angles, as at 28, and are arranged to engage the'upper surface of the terminals of the balance beam to hold the same against movement on its pivot.
The inner uprights 5 of the gate 2 are extended above the upper rail 3 and are provided with a guide eye 29, through which is threaded the lower terminal of the pull rope 17 and this terminal has its lower end secured tothe weight end 30 of the operating lever 31, which is pivoted intermediate its ends to the extended portions'of the uprights 5. The free end of the lever 31 extends toward and engages the latch 28 and the lower end of this latch is provided with a curved portion 32.
In operation of the improved device,
when it is desired to open the gate one terminal of the pull is pulled downwardly which-in turn will raise the weight end 30 of the lever 31 and force the inner end thereof downward and thrown the latch 28 out of engagement with the upper surface of the balance or shifting beam 9. The latch 28 is forced outrof engagement with the upper surface of the balance or shifting beam 9 owing to the curvature of the latch at the lower end thereof, and further movement of the pull rope forces the free end thereof into engagement with the balance beam,
which locks the balance beam and gate together, and upon further movement of the pull rope, the gate and the inner end of the balance beam are raised so as to lower the outer end of the balance beam. \Vhen the outer end of the balance beam rides below post 13, the same will swing over the upper surface of the outer end of the balance beam and hold the balance beam in this position andthe gate will then slide across the road on therollers 8 into open position. When the gate is in its fully opened position, the inner end of the lever 31 is in direct alinement with the latch 26 pivoted to the post 13, so that when it is desired to close the gate, it is merely necessary to pullon the rope 17 and actuate the lever 31, which'will move the latch 26 out of engagement with the outer end of the balance beam and raise the beam and gate and allow the same to swing to its closed position. The free .end of the upper rail 3 of the gate 2 ispreferably provided with a counterweight 35 so as to permit the balance beam to be readily swung on its pivot when the gate is in its closed position. The inner end of the balance beam itself may be also provided with a weight 36, so as to balance the weight of the gate when the same is in its closed position and thus facilitate the swinging of the-balance beam. The upper surface of the balance beam is provided with upwardly extending lugs or ears 37 adjacent each end thereof and form abutting meansfor the inner end of the lever 31 so as to prevent movement of the gate 2 until the balance beam has been locked in position by one of the latches 26.
The lower end of the gate 2 carries a latch 37 having the downturned end 38 which is adapted to engage a bar 39 carried by the 'inner post 11 and this latch prevents accidental movement of the gate when the same is not being operated. m
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that an improved gate is provided, which is so constructed as to be operated at a point distant from the gate so as to eliminate the-necessity of the occupant of a vehicle leaving the vehicle to open and close the gate.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment. is the most ellicient and practical; yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize that various minor changes in details of construction, proporby said gate and arranged to engage either one of the latches to move the same out of engagement with the balance beam, and means operatively connected to said lever to swing it to release the latch, tilt the beam on its pivot and slide the gate along the beam.
2. In a device of the class described, a balance beam pivoted intermediate its ends, a gate slidably mounted upon said balance beam, means for normally holding the balance beam against movement, a. lever carried by said gate arranged to engage said means and move the same out of engagement with the balance beam, and means for 15 swin ing the balance beam on its pivot, as and tor the purpose specified.
