To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. Booz, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vanburen, county of Grant, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Pulling-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts. The object of this invention is the construction of an oil well puller or derrick which will operate with perfect efi lciency and satisfaction, and yet which is readily collapsible so that it can be easily handled and can be loaded in the side door of a 36 box car. Such derricks heretofore have required one or two flat cars for shipping the same, on account of their great length.
The full nature of this invention will be more fully understood from the accompanying drawings and the following specification and claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front ele vation of such device in operating position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a transverse section on the line et of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the derrick in collapsed condition for being shipped. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the mast by itself. Fig. 7 is a plan View of the intermediate section of the derrick frame by itself. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the lower portion of the said derrick frame by itself.
The derrick consists of three parts, the mast 10, the lower end of which telescopes in the intermediate portion 11 of the derrick and the lower part of said intermediate portion is mounted in the upper part of the lower portion 12. The lower portion 12 is relatively wide and has a base 14: which rests upon the ground and two uprights 15 with a pair of cross bars 16 at the middle and another pair of'cross bars 17 at the upper end thereof. The cable 20 extends from the windlass mechanism 21 which is mounted on the lower part of the portion 12 of the derrick and extends over the pulley 22 at the top of the mast and down to the well 23,
The intermediate portion 11 of the derrick is formed of two uprights spaced from each other to receive the mast 10 and connected at the upper end by the cross bars 26 and by cross bars 27, 28 and 29 intermediate the ends and between which the mast is mounted. When the mast is elevated, as shown in Fig. 1, its lower end is supported by a gate 30,2125 in such construe tions heretofore in use. When it is desired to shorten or collapse the derrick the gate 30 is withdrawn and the mast 10 descends to the position shown in Fig. 5. If desired said inastis telescoped by the cable 35 which is connected with the upper part of the intermediate portion of the derrick by the bolt 36 and extends down about a pulley 37 at the lower end of the mast and up over a pulley 38 near the top of the intermediate portion 11 of the derrick at the other side of the mast and down to a Windlass 38 mounted in the lower portion 12 of. the derrick and actuated by handle 40.
The lower end of the intermediate portion 11 of the derrick is and must be securely mounted to the lower portion 12 thereof. It is secured in place by the spikes 41 passing through the bars 16 and 17 of the lower portion of the derrick and the uprights of the intermediate portion of the derrick. But to enable the structure to stand the terrific strain to which it is subjected brace bars 42 are secured to the upper ends of the uprights of the lower portion 12 of the derrick and extend down, and are secured to the under side of the uprights of the intermediate portion of the derrick, as shown in Fig.
5. Therefore, the downward strain of the structure comes upon the ends longitudinally of the uprights of the portions 11 and 12 of the derrick.
The invention claimed is 1. An oil well pulling apparatus includ ing a derrick consisting of three parts, a relatively wide lower part having lateral uprights, cross bars connecting the upper ends of the uprights, cross bars connecting the uprights between their ends, an intermediate part of the derrick extending into the lower part of the derrick to the intermediate ci'oss bars thereof, means for securing the intermediate part of the derrick to the cross bars of the lower part of the derrick, means connecting the lower ends of the intermediate part of the derrick to the upper ends of the uprights of the lower part of the derrick, and a mast adapted to telescope in the intermediate part of the derrick.
