FOOTWEAR Specication f Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 24, V1920.
Application led November 6, 1918. Serial No. 261.336.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, SYLvEsTER DAVIDSON FAIRWEATHER, a subject of theKing of the United Kingdom of GreatBritain and Ire# land, and residing at Newburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Footwear, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in footwear and consists in the formation of a boot or shoe in such wise that the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe, all the toes.
themselves, the outer part of the sole of the foot, and the heel, shall rest on one plane, parallel to the surface on which the sole of the boot or shoe rests; the heel and the forward portion of the sole of the boot or shoe being co-planar and the intermediate portion of the inner side part of the foot-supporting surface of theboot or shoe being proximate conformity with the arch at the inner side of the foot. i
In a boot. orshoe so formed the heel por-V tion and the sole portion which supports the ball of the foot are of practically the same thickness and may be comparatively7 rigid. The intermediate arched'portion of the `sole under the arch of the foot should possess ay The sole and metallic spring may7 if de? sired, be curved to iit the anteriortransverse arch of the foot; such additional. curvaturev is not necessary, however. Y
For the purpose ofthe present specification the term sole is employed to include any leather which underlies the arch of the foot; in practice the upper leather may be brought under the arch when great iieXibilityis desired, the actual sole leather being cut narrower accordingly.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention as embodied in av boot, Figure l is an elevation of the inner aspect of the left boot. Fig. 2 is a vertical.v
section of the outer side of the saine.v Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the arched portion of the sole,
As shown inthe drawings the heel portion l and the sole portion 2' on which rest the toes and the ball of the foot Vare co-planar and l-of practically the same thickness so that the metatarso-phalangeall joint of the big toe, all the toes, the outer part of thesole of the foot Vand the heel shall rest in one Vplane parallel to the ground. 3 vdenotes the `4L denotes the spring above referred to. The
innerA edge of the boot or shoe is preferably straight so that the big toe may be inline with the `inner side of the arch. l
Footwear suoli as described and shown may be of leather or of any other suitable material, with or without theincorporation of spring met-al reinforcement.
What I claim is l. A boot or shoe formed as described and having alfoot supportingsurface for. the metatarso-phalangeal joint of the big toe,v the toes themselves, the outer part of the sole of the foot, and the heel all in one plane which is parallel to the tread or outer surface of the sole of the boot or slice, the 'tread surfaces ofthe heel and the forward portion of the sole of the boot or shoe being coplanar, and the intermediate portion of the inner side part ofthe shoe being arched or curved in approximate conformity with. the arch at the inner side of the foot 2. A boot or shoe formed as described and having a foot supporting surface for the metatarso-plialangeal joint of the big toe, the toes themselves, the outer partof the sole of the foot and the heel all in one plane which is parallel to the tread or outer surface of the sole of the boot or shoe, the tread surfaces of the heel and the forward portion of the sole of the boot or shoe being coplanar, and the intermediate portion of the inner side part of the shoe being arched or curved in approximate conformity with the arch at the inner side ofthe foot,`combined with an arched metallic spring curved to conform to the arched portion of the sole so as to reinforce the same.
In testimony whereof vI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. Y v
SYLVESTER DAVIDSON FAIRWEA'IHER. Y
