IMPROVEMENT IN TREADLES FOR SEWlNG-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY 0. SMITH, of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved SewingMachine Treadle, of which the following is a specification:
This improvement consists in the application of athird or additional slipper to a sewing-machine treadle, in such a manner that an alternate motion may be had of the feet of the operator, if desired, and which may be readily disconnected, if desired, so that the ordinary treadle may be used without it, whereby the operator can at pleasure change the manner of working the feet, giving rest to the muscles, and permitting a change in movement which renders the labor less fatiguing.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of a sewing-machine table having my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same with one of the table-legs removed.
A represents a sewing-machine table, having the=ordinary double slipper B attached, with pitman O and crank-shaft D. Upon the treadlerod E I attach a third or additional slipper, F, the bearings of which are directly under the ball of the heel; and to the toe of said slipper F is attached a cord, G, which passes over a pulley, H, secured to the under side of the table-top, and passes down and is attached to a hook, t, on the pitma-n O, by an adjustable swivel, k, on the opposite end.
By the introduction of the third or additional slipper an easy alternating motion of the treadlesis obtained, and at little additional cost, and which does not require the removal or alteration of the common treadle. The change from the alternate motion is easily and readily made by simply unhooking the cord G from the pitman O, which arrangement adapts the treadle to be used in either manner at pleasure.
I claim The combination of the slipper F, cord G, pulley H, and adjusting-swivel i with the pitman (J and treadle 13, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
. H. 0. SMITH.
