Description

B. LA F. HENDRlCKS. AUTO SAFETY LOCKHJG DEVICE. APPLICATlOH mw SEPT. 1s, 1.919.
UNITED STATE AU'I'G SAFETY LOCKING DEVIGE.
essences.
Specification of Letters Patent.
s, 1' .HL ,.l ll (ini ial-lire l Application filed September 16, 1919. Serial No. 324,245.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN L. Hex- BRICKS, a citizen of the United States, rcsiding at Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auto Safety Locking Devices, of which the following is a Specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in looking devices, and it is prinnn rily an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character particularly adapted for use in connection with the operating members of a transmission of the type as employed in connection with the well known Ford automobile, and which device provides means whereby the use of the automobile by an unauthorized person is substantially prevented.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved locking device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. I
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed,
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in plan of a locking device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position, the coact-ing levers being shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of my improved locking device, as herein b lied, with the coacting levers in. ment and the supporting base in section, said figure being somewhat diagrammatic, and,
Fig.- 3 is a view in end elevation of my improved device, as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a plate adapted to be anchoredto the body of an automobile or the like and to one ride of the operating levers, and which plate is provided with a staple or eye 2 to which is engaged an end portion of a hasp 3. The connection of the hoop with the staple 2 is afforded by a slot duced in an end portion of the lump 3 permits an endwise movement of the hasp 3 l 1 nowhich in order to move the same out of the way when not in use. The operating levers comprise a clutchlever, the reverse lever and the. brake lover all moving or swinging substantially in the same direction.
The opposite end portion of the has'o 3 its length, the hasp :3 provided in 1 side portion with a slot (3 extending longitudinally of the hasp 3 and having its end re-- mote from the slot -l. This second 0- slot 6, when the device is ill'lPllGCi in lo position, receives the lever of the ch when the some opposite side vance of the slo 5 p '2 I a which contacts with the i Terrill lever,
the device in locking position said reverse lever against movcma From the foregoing description, it i thought to be obvious that a locking devi e constructed. in accordance with n'iy hr. in tion is particularl; well ll-(lPltl/dtl for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and opera d, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modificatioir 'ithout departing fini principles and spirit thereof, and reason do not wish 0 he understood as limiting myself to tle precise ari. ng and forn'iation of the several parts 1 shown in car ng l practice except as he l A l citing device adapte f to hold a. plurality of lovers arranged a by side and moving r the same general direction other open slot to receive the lever next to the member, said hasp being provided with a lag to engage an intermediate lever to hold the same against movement when the hasp is in looking engagement with the levers received within the open slots.
2. A locking device adapted for use. with a plurality of levers arranged side by side and moving in the same general direction, consisting of a member supported independently ot'the levers, and to one side thereof, a hasp having one end portion slidably and swingingly engaged with the member, the opposite end portion being provided with an open slot, to receive the lever remote from the member, means for looking said lever within the slot, said hasp inwardly of the slot being provided within a longitudinal margin thereof with a second openslot facing in the same direction as the firstnamed slot, said second slot receiving the lever next to the member, the opposite side marginal portion of the hasp in advance of the second slot being provided with a lug to engage an intermediate lever to hold the same against movement when the hasp is in looking engagement with the levers received within the open slots.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature. I
