SPRING-MOUNTING FOR CAR-TRUCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Fel). 24, 1920.
I Application led December 6, 1919. Serial No. 343.036.
- lcar body due to the recoil of the springs is tothe truck frame.
cushioned by the springs themselves.
` further object 1s to provide a novel and efficient means for securing the spring butts Other objects and advantages will be apn the accompanying drawings wherein -for the purpose of illustration is shown a .preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 1 is a side elevation ofva portion of a' truck showing the spring mounting thereof. i Fig. 2 is a plan view of the spring mounting shown partly in section.
Fig. Bis a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the l attachment of the spring butts to the truck frame, and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective of the outer or free end of the spring.
AReferring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a truck frame provided upon its end with a lower 'Y longitudinally extending portion 11 forrnying a spring support. A'bove the spring sup rtll` is aix/upper longitudinally exten ing portion ofthe'frame 12 forming an overhangingxshoulder. Between the overhanging shoulder 12 and the inner end.v of
the spring support 11 is formed a notch against which a portion of the springs abut.
A leaf spring 13 is provided havmgthe ends of the leaves notched asat 1410 form spacedsections 14.v The-,truckframe l0 is recei'edffbetween Athe lspaci'ad prtior'isy 14. l
A spring ,band or yoke 15' is provided having an aperture which receives the ends of .the spring adjacent the out outportions bottom 16 of the yoke resting upon the up per surface thereof. It will be seen that movement of the springs leaves transversely of the frame 10 is provided against Aby the interlocking engagement of the springs themselves with the frame and also the engagement of the yoke therewith. Vertical displacement of the s rings is prevented by the shoulder 12 and t 1e yoke.
The outer end of the spring or that portion of the leaves which extends the full length thereof is provided with a longitudinally -elongated aperture 19. Secured ro supports 20 forming a portion of the body frame of the car as by vmeans of bolts 2l is a tubular casting 22 having the lower end thereof open as at 23. Slidably mounted within the tubular casting 22 is the second tubular casting 24. A spring 25 is disposed intermediate the lower end 26 of the tubular casting 2l and the upper end 2T of the tubular casting The tubular casting 22 is provided with downwardly extending ears 28 havingmounted therein a transverse bolt 29. A bolt 30 is mounted in apertures formed in the bottom 26-0f the tubular casting 24 and the top 27 of the tubular casting 22 and is provided upon its upper end with a nut 81. The lower end of the bolt 30 extends through the aperture 19 of the spring 13 andis provided in its lower end 'they are illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. llf,
however, an unusual j ar is applied the spring 3 of the spring engages the transverse bolt" 29 vof aleaf springl provided in the buttends slot i9 oit the'spring prevents undue thrustv 'being placed upon the castings 22 and 24;
and also prevents the shock' .from/beingi im? parted to rthe car frame "in a longitudinal direction. ln the rebound action resulting from thefconioression oi the' sirin 2'5`andj the distortion of the spring 13 the-'outer end and the spring' 13 accordingly' cushions such rebound..
size, and arrangement, ,of thevarious parts shown and described, I do not limit myself i to the specific structure herein setiforth, but
may make any, such changes, Without depart-,l ingfrom lthey spiritoii` theginvention, or the scope of the subjoined claims.
