PULLEY BIM. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. I2, 1918.

` tain new UNYIEDY PATENT OFFICE.
PETER R. EKLUND, 0F LITTLE SWAN, MINNESOTA.
rULLEY-RIM Application yfiled September 12, 1918.
To all whom it may concern.'
Ee it known that I, PETER R. EKLND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Swan, in the county of St. Louis land State 'of Minnesota, have invented cerand useful `Improvements in Pulley-Rims, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pulleys, and more especially tofthose employed for belting and the like; and the object of the same is to produce an improved detachable rim applicable to an ordinary pulley for enlarging its size and without necessarily removing the pulley from its shaft.
A further object is to provide means for preventing the rim from slipping on the pulley.
A further object is to provide an improved joint in the periphery'of the rim.
Yet lanother object is to produce a device of the character which is extremely cheap and easily operated.
Details are set forth in the following specification and claims. lReferring to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of an ordinary pulley with this improved rim applied,
.Fig 2 is a detail showing the lap joint hereinafter referred to,
Fig. 3 is a section of the upper half of Fig. 1, on the line 3-3 thereof.
The ordinary pulley is herein shown as made up 0f a hub H, spokes S, and a rim R; and this pulley is adapted to be fastened on a shaft not shown, and in time will become so firmly fastened thereon and perhaps rusted in place that it will be eX- tremely diflicult to remove it. Let us assume now that it is desired to increase the size of this pulley: need immediately rises for a rim which can be applied to the pulley without removing it from its shaft, and my invention supplies that nee-d.
Referring more especially to the numerals on the drawings, 1 designates an inner rim, 2 are spokes radiating therefrom, 3 is an outer rim at the outer ends of the spokes, and 4 is packing as of rubber or leather between the inner rim 1 and the rim R of the ordinary pulley. The outer rim 3 is shown as made in two Vmembers preferably arched slightly on their outer faces, as shown, hingedly connected with each other as at 5 at one side, and detachably connected Specification of Letters Patent.

at a point directly opposite. The means for attaching the ends at the last point consists in turning them inward into ears 6 and running a bolt 7 through the ears. The riin itself may have a lap joint as shown at S in Fig. 2, or the ends of its parts may abut directly as shown at the top of Fig. 1.
The inner rim also is in two parts, and these parts are detachably connected by forming them at their extremities with outturned ears 16 and running bolts 17 through the-se ears in pairs as seen. The points of connection between the twoparts of the inner rim are directly in line withthe hinge and the point of connection between the two parts of the outer rim. lVhen this improved rim is to be applied to a pulley. all bolts 7 and 17 are loosened and perhaps removed, and the parts of the outer rim are turned on their hinge 5 ntil the parts 0f the inner rim are separated a little so that they can be passed over the rim R of the pulley fast on the shaft. Then the bolts are applied and tightened up, and if a lap joint is employed as at 8 in Fig. 2, there will be no appreciable interruption to the periphery of the outer rim. If an ordinary joint is employed as seen at the top of Fig. 1, a little crack may occur at this point, especially if the inner rim does not nt with great accuracy around the rim Rof the pulley. In order to avoid this crack. and in order also to prevent the inner rim 1 from slipping on the rim R, l preferably interpose packing as indicated at 4f, which packing may be of rubber, leather. or the like. If this packing be compressible, it permits the tightening up of the bolts 7 and 17 even to such an extent that the inner rim embeds and compresses the packing slightly. I have spoken of spokes S within the main pulley, but the latter might be solid. In fact lay no claim 'whatever to the structure of the pulley itself,v as my invention lies wholly in the rim.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions,et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invenof the outer members at one side, and means for drawing the ends together at the other side so as to cause the inner rim to closely surround and clamp ksaid soft face of the pulley. Y
2. The combination with a pulley havingv a soft face; of a pulley rim comprising inner and outer two-part rim members, the parts being respectively connected with each other by spokes, a hinge connectingthe ends of the outermembersat one side, inturned ears on these members at the other side, and a bolt through said ears for drawing them together and clamping the inner rim around the soft face of the pulley. v
3. The combination with a pulley having a soft face; of a pulley rim comprising inner and'outer twopartrim members, means connecting the respective parts together, a
nhinge connecting the ends of the outer members at-one side, and means for drawing the ends together at the other side so as to cause the inner rim to closely surround and clamp said soft face of the pulley.
Il. The combination with a pulley having a soft face; of a pulley rim'coinprising inner and ,outer two-part vrim members, means connecting the respective parts to each other,
a hinge connecting the Vends ofthe ',outei" members at one side, inturned ears on the members at the other side, and-a bolt through said ears for drawing them together and.
clamping the yinner Yrim around the soft faceof the pulley.
In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature
