IMPROVEMENT IN HEEL-TRIMMING MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,944, dated November 12, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES J. ADDY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machine for Trimming Heels, of which the following is a specification:

The Nature and Object of the Invention.

The nature of my invention consists in combining with a cutting-wheel, which has a vertical motion, a jacking device so arranged that in its revolution to bring the diflerent parts of the heel to the action of the cutter it will not cause the shoe or boot to move in a plane, but in a warped surface; thus the heel will be inclined more or less to the cutting-wheel. This is accomplished by having the jack swing on an axis which is at right angles to the axis of the cutting-wheel, the jack also swinging on an axis nearly parallel to the axis of the cutter. The swinging motion imparted to the jack on its right angular axis is governed by a guide so formed as to cause the jack to present the edge of the heel at a varying angle to the cutter. The object of the invention is to cause the shoe to be presented to the cutter in such a manner that the heel shall have the proper angle given to its edges.

Description of the Drawing.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation, a part bein g shown in section.

General Description.

A 13 represents the frame or standard, to which the other parts are attached. H and H are arms fixed rigidly to the standard A B. To these arms the swinging arms 70 K k of the jack L N are pivoted. L, forming one part of the jack, is fixed rigidly to the piece k K k, and has a start, V, attached to it. In the start V a groove is out, which looks onto the guidin g-plate M. This guiding-plate is formed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and serves to cause the jack and the shoe to swing on the axis k k, and thus to present the edge of the heel to the cutter at different angles. N, forming the front of the jack, is pivoted to the part L at n, and is held in position by the link S. This link S is pivoted at L, and hooks onto a stud, It, in the part N, and thus takes the strain of the screw 1? O. The notch, at R, in the lever S, may be extended upward, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, so that by pressing downthe lever an additional strain may be brought to bear on the part N, and thus hold the boot or shoe more firmly. The cutting ortrimming wheel E is hung, by any suitable housings, in the slide 0, which has a free vertical motion. The motion of the slide 0 may be regulated by a lever, weight, or spring but the cutting action of the cutter will be governed by the pattern L at the upper end of L and the deflecting motion caused by the guide M, I

as already described.

To jack a shoe or boot the lever S is raised sufficiently to allow the part N to fall back; then the shoe is placed with its heel against the pattern L; the part N is brought up and fastened by the pin and notchlt, and the screw P O is turned up so as to bring a holding-pressure upon the shoe. To trim the heel the cutting-wheel E is brought to the proper position, and the jack turned so as to present all of the parts of the heel to the cutter. If desirable, a stationary instead of arevolving cutter may be used.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the pattern L with the swinging arm 70 K 70, substantially as described, and for the purposeset forth.

2. The combination of the pattern L and the swinging arm 70 K 76 with the guiding device V M, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. The jack L N R S, constructed substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

4. The combination of the swinging arm k K it, when the same holds the jack, with a cutter, E, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
