IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-CLEANING MACHINES.

Specification formiiag part of Letters Patent No. 132,927, dated November 12, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, GRANVILLE 0. SMITH and CHARLES T. STORY, of Boston, of the county of Sufl'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful or Improved Machine for Cleansing Carpets; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which Figure 1 is a top view; Fig 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section; and Fig. 4, a transverse section of it. Fig. 5 is a flatwise section of its air-induct and the air regulating and directing guides thereof.

In such drawing, A denotes a hollow drum, arranged to revolve within a cylindrical case, B, furnished with an educt, O, as shown. The said case has two doors, D E, to corresponding openings in its periphery, they being arranged, as shown, with reference to the flat air induct F. The hollow drum has its periphery foraminous, and is provided with openings through one or both ends, the drum being arranged within the case concentrically, with its shaft G supported in suitable bearings and extended through one end of such case. The lower door may be furnished with counterbalancing weights, connected with cords a a, leading over pulleys b b arranged in the posts 0 c of the frame H, for supporting the machine. Theinductisfurnishedwith an openingthrough its top, and a door, d, thereto, as shown, and the induct at its inner end is to extend nearly if not entirely across the rotary drum, around which and upon its foraminous periphery a carpet, while being cleansed, is to be stretched and be held thereon by suitable means. The induct narrows from its front to its rear end, where it is open to receive the educt of a fanblower or other machine for blowing a powerful blast or current of air into said induct. At the inner mouth of the induct is a deflector, I, which is hinged to the mouth. Such deflector may be furnished with a spring for forcing or keeping it down, or upon or nearly in close contact with the carpet, and it should also have a hand-lever, 0, so connected with it and applied to the induct as to enable such deflector, by means of such lever and manual power applied thereto, to be raised to different inclinations, or a horizontal position, as occasion may require, to distribute the blast of air upon the carpet. Within the induct are two movable wings .or guides, K K, they being arranged as shown, and each at or near its rear end being pivoted to the induct so as to be capable of being swung or movedtoward and from its axis. Each of such wings or guides extends from the top to the bottom of the induct or the air-passage thereof, they being intended to concentrate more or less and direct upon any part or parts of the carpetexposed to its action the current of air when flowing through the induct.

By means of either or both the guides the current may be made to act all at once upon any portion of the width of the carpet,'or entirely across it. The two guides should be provided with means of enabling them or either of them to be moved within the induct, as occasion may require. Such means may be springs to move them backward, and cords or lines to draw them forward.

With this machine the dust is driven from the carpet by the current of vair driven through the meshes of the threads, such dust with the air passing out of the case by the educt, from whence it may be discharged to a convenient place or reservoir, which may be outside of the building in which the machine may be situated. The door openings and doors of the case are to enable a person to gain access to the foraminous drum for the purpose of applying and fixing a carpet to it or removing it therefrom after it may have been cleansed.

We claim- The combination of the induct F and one or more deflectors or guides, I K, applied thereto or arranged therewith, as set forth, with the foraminous drum A and the case B furnished with an educt 0, all being substantially as explained, and to operate as represented.
