Description

E. FARNAM.
SCARECROW.
APPLICATION man mm, 1919.
Patented Jan. 27, 1920.
ELVIN FARNAM, OF Los ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SCABECROW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 27, 1920.
Application filed April 8, 1919. Serial No. 288,490.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELVIN FARNAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scarecrows, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to make a scarecrow, and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a scarecrow embodying the principles of my invention in use.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 8 is a side elevation on the same plane as Fig. 1, and as seen looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 3 in Fig. 4.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view as seen looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 4 in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail showing a modified form of support.
The scarecrow 1 is made in imitation of a large bird, such as a bird of prey and is breast 2. A small opening 10 is formed through the center of the plate 8.
The post 11 is nailed to the body of a tree 12 in a vertical position, a bore 13 is formed from the upper end of the post 11, a pin 14 is driven tightly into the bore 13, and the pin 14 fits loosely in the central opening 5, and the point 15 of the pin extends part way into the opening 10, so that the scarecrow will rotate and. vibrate by the action of the wind.
In Fig. 5 the timber 16 may be mounted in any suitable way. The cord 17 is placed through the opening 10, and a knot 18 formed upon its lower end and the upper end is inserted through the timber 16 and a knot .19 formed upon its upper end, so that the scarecrow may be moved around by the wind to the limits or" the cord 17.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
A scare-crow comprising a body member having a flat top, feathers mounted at their quill ends upon the flat top of the body member and extending outwardly, a plate adapted to cover and clamp down to the body member to hold the feathers and a pivot bearing in the plate adapted to ride upon a pivot extending upwardly through a hole in the body member so that the scare-crow will lie horizontally and flutter in the wind.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ELVIN FARNAM.
