gnoentoa fife/Q 611 HARRY J. PENN, OF MADISON, NORTH CAROLINA.
TOBACCO-EXTRACTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 27, 1920.
Application filed July 1, 1919. Serial No. 307,882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY J. PENN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Rockingham and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Tobacco-Extractor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tobacco plug extractors and has for its object the provision of an implement whereby a plug of tobacco may be removed from the box or container in which it is packed without loosening the remaining contents of the box. The device being designed particularly for the convenience of retail salesmen. Considerable difliculty is often experienced in removing plug tobacco from the boxes in which it is packed, due to the compact condition in which it is necessary to press the plugs to retain the moisture in the tobacco, and many expedients are resorted to in order to loosen the tobac o to be sold and at the same time leave the balance undisturbed, it being common practice to loosen the sides of the container, which not only renders the same unlit for future use, but permits the air to enter and dry out the tobacco, which is objectionable.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a tobacco container with the invention shown in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a top view of a portion of the extractor.
" 4 is a transverse section.
big. is an end elevation.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference the numeral 1 designates a tobacco box and 2 the plugs of tobacco therein. The device forming the subject of this invention comprises ashank 3 of stout wire stock. having at one end a ring 4: to form a handle for mani ulating the implement and at the other end is provided with a hook 5.
The shank 3 is flattened for a portion of its length as indicated at ('3. The flattened portion and the hook at its base are of the same thickness. the hook on its rear face tapering to the end as indicated at 7 and sharpened to a cutting edge 8; at its-forward edge.
In using the device the hook is inserted under the plug as shown in Fig. 1, the cutting edge 8 being forced between the edge of the plug and the box until the rear face of the hook is located back of the plug to be extracted, a quarter turn of the handle moves the hook to a vertical position back of the plug which is then easily removed from the container by a pull on the handle.
Insertion of the tool is rendered comparatively easy, due to the arcuate sharp edge of the hook, which readily cuts under the plug.
The cost to manufacture this device is so inexpensive that one may be included with each box of tobacco without materially increasing the cost of the tobacco, and the merchant will always be supplied with a convenient and practical means of removing tobacco from its container.
What is claimed is.
1. A device for extracting tobacco plugs from a container, comprising a shank provided with a laterally projecting hook the forward edge of the hook being sharpened to a cutting edge.
2. A device for extracting tobacco plugs from a container comprising a shank provided with a laterally projecting hook said hook having a forward arcuate cutting edge.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, 'I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HARRY J. PENN.
Witnesses CLARA GREENE, MYRTLE HELMs.
