JAMES 0. JARDINE, JAMES nrcrszrn, nan a. or S'UIYSIMERSIDEPRINCE Enw'ann IsLann, CANADA.
CART-SADDLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES C. JARDINE, Janus Dream, and GEORGE A. BOWNESS, all subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cart-Saddles; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othe-s skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to saddles and more particularly to a cart saddle for connecting the harness to draft animals.
An object of the present invention is to provide a saddle of this character which consists of a plurality of interchangeable parts, so that should any one of the same become worn or broken an unskilled person in the art of saddle making may easily and readily apply a new part to take place of this worn or broken part.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a saddle of this character having its various parts detachable so as to eliminate the use of stitches for connecting the parts as has been herebefore done and also produce a saddle in which the life thereof will be prolonged and one which will be commercially desirable.
With the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the de scription continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1. is a perspective view of the saddle embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section;
Fig. i is a detail transverse section; and.
Fig. 5 is a detail vertical longitudinal section.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in. connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, with the further understanding that while the drawings show a partial. form of the invention, the latter is Specification of Letters Patent.
not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings, but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention.
Like and corresponding parts are indicated by similar reference characters throughout the several views.
The numeral 1 indicates the saddletree which is semi-circular in configuration and has a groove in its upper face for the reception of the shaft supporting straps. The saddle also comprises two detachable sections which may be made of leather, wood, iron, steel or similar material, one of which indicated by the numeral 2 is the cantle section and the other one indicated by the numeral 3 is the pommel section which comprise the pad boards and adapted to be connected to the saddletree and pad boards are a pair of pads .4. These pads each comprise a backing 5 having secured thereto a leather facing 6 which forms a bracket for holding the padding material 7. This facing 6 may be made of leather or any other suitable material and the inner faces of the members 5 are reinforced by means of the metallic cross bars 8 each having threaded openings formed therein. Extendtl'irough the saddletree are the screw bolts 9 and these latter extend through. the backing 5 and the threaded openings ar ranged within the plates 8 for detachably connecting the pads 4t to the saddletree and which also hold the pad boards 2- and 3 in place. The inner edges of these boards 2 and 3 rest within the recess 10 formed within the opposite sides adjacent the lower face of the saddletree and the boards 2 and 3 are connected to the backing plates 5 by means of the screws or similar fastening members 11. The girth band comprises two sections indicated by the numerals 12 and 13 and these sections are detachably connected together by means of the buckle 14, whereas their opposite ends are secured between the pads and the saddletree.
From the foregoing it is obvious that we have produced a cart saddle comprising a plurality of detachable sections so that the various parts thereof may be manufactured separatelyand readily assembled without Patented Jan. 27, 1920.
for detachably connecting said pads to said saddletree said pads adapted to retain said cantle and pominel sections adj acent said saddletree substantially as and for the purl5 pose specified.
In Witness whereof We have hereunto set our hands.
JAMES C. JARDINE. JAMES DICKIE. GEORGE A. BOWNESS.
