To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT V. BnA uAN, a. citizen of the United States, resldlng at Pittsboro, Hendricks county, and State of Indiana, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Pig: Brooders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to pig broodersand its principal object is to provide means whereby the young breeding pigs Wlll be protected from injury by the sow, and also to provide a, convenient construct on atfording suificient warmth for the plgs during cold weather and obtalnlng a circulation of heated air that will serve to keep the compartment dry.

WVith these objects in view, my invention is embodied in preferable form in the construction hereinafter described and lllustrated in the accompanying drawings.

In these drawings, the View is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a building embodying the invention.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a suitable building, room or compartment in which are adapted to be received a sow and her litter of pigs. In one end wall 2, of this compartment is mounted a casing 3, preferably attached to the outside of the wall and constituting a heater carrying chamber. In this casing is suitably mounted a heater 4, consisting of a liquid hydrocarbon burner or a heater supplied with gas, coal or other fuel. This heater is adapted to warm the air in the chamber 3, and a pipe 5, leads from the upper end of the casing into the main chamber 1, where it is provided with longitudinally spaced and downwardly directed exit branches 6, which are adapted to direct the heated air from the casing downwardly into a limited space adjacent the end of the main chamber. These branch pipes extend into openings through a horizontal deflector and heat retaining shield 7, which preferably extends against or closely adjacent to the rear end wall of the main compartment at one end and at its other end abuts against a vertical guard and partition wall 8, which extends to within a short distance of and comparatively near the floor of the main compartment and is spaced above the latter sufliciently to permit the small pigs to pass under the same, but to prevent the passage of the sow from the main compartment to the limited chamber9, formed bysaid partition wall and the rear end; wall of the compartment. The vertical partition wall is vertically slidable and ad justable by means of guide cleats 10, and clamping, nutsll, in order to enable the height of the partition to be regulated to accommodate it to sows of different sizes. The partition wall also extends above the level of the horizontal shield in order to protect the sow from the branch pipes. The chamber 9, eonstitutesa heated chamber, the heat in which will serve to protect the small pigs 5 in cold weather. In the ordinary breeding of pigs it has beenfound that'in cold weather, the pigs'will be attractedto the empty nest or bedding of the sow for the purpose of obtaining the warmth imparted thereto by' the body of the sow when lying down, and when the sow again lies down she will frequently crush and kill or injure the small pigs. In ordinary breeding, the loss from this cause sometimes amounts to as much as fifty per cent. of the litter. With my invention, owing to the fact that the pigs will seek the warmest spot in cold weather, it will be seen that they will be attracted over toward the heated, separated, limited chamber in the end of the compartment, in which chamber they will be effectively protected from the sow.

Leading from the front end of the main compartment 1, to the bottom of the heater carrying casing, is a cold air conveying pipe 12, adapted to draw the cold air from the front part of the chamber to the heater and thus maintain a circulation of the air and provide for the heating of the main chamber throughout.

Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim is 1. A pig brooder comprising a main chamber, an exterior adjacent heater, a brooding chamber within the main chamber and on a level with the same formed of a horizontal member, and a vertically adjustable guard having an opening along the floor level, and means for heating the brooding chamber to a higher degree than the main chamber.

2. A pig brooder comprising a main chamber, an exterior adjacent heater, a brooding chamber Within and on a level with the main chamber formed of a horizontal memher, and a vertically adjustable guard, and means for bringing heat from the heater-to the brooding chamber, said heat passing through the opening under the adjustable guard into the main chamber.

3. A pig brooder comprising a main chamber, an exterior adjacent heater, a brooding chamber within the main chamber and on a level with the same formed of a horizontal member, and a vertically adjustable guard having an opening along the floor level, means for bringing heat downwardly from the heater into the brooding chamber, the said heat passing through the opening under the adjustable guard into the main chamber, and means for returning air from the main chamber to the heater.

A pig brooder comprising a main chamher, an exterior casing adjacent thereto and containing a heater, a brooding chamber within the main chamber and on a level with the same formed of a fixed horizontal heat retainingshield, and a vertically adjustable guard forming an opening along the floor level, pipes connecting the heater casing with the top of the brooding chamber allowing the heat to pass downwardly from the top of the said brooding chamber and out under the opening below the adjustable guard and into the main chamber.

A pig brooder having an inclo'sing structure forming a chamber, a heater casing exterior of said chamber, a heater in said casing, a vertically adjustable vertical partition mounted in said chamber and of less height than the height of thelatter and adapted to be adjusted from the floor thereof a distance to permit small pigs only to pass under, a horizontal heat confining and deflecting shield extending from one end of said chamber to said vertical partition and forming in conjunction with the latter a limited area capable of admitting the small pigs only, and heat conducting pipes leading from said heater casing and passing downwardly through the deflecting shield to direct the heated air downwardly within said limited space;
