Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 20, 1920.
Application filed lviaroh 6, 1919. Serial No. 281,019.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, l/VILLIAM FvROBERT- son, citizen of the United States, residing at Malta, in the county of Phillips and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful In'iprovements in Fence-\Vire Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to fencing and more particularly to the fastening means whereby wire fencing is attached to the posts or other supporting means.
The invention primarily relates to a metal fence post having a lateral opening, a fastening member mounted on the post and having a wire engaging element and securing means cooperating with the post and fastening member and operating by a wedg ing action to firmly grip the fence wire bctween the post and the wire engaging element.
The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, however, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Referring to the drawing hereto attached.
Figure l is a view in elevation of a portion of a wire fence embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail on the line 22 of Fig 1 looking to the left showing the part on a larger scale.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. I is a view similar to Fig. 2 of a modification.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and inclicated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The invention consists of a fence post 1 which as indicated is of angular form, one of the wings being provided with any number of openings 2 for receiving the wire engaging element 3 which as shown are of hook form. It is to be understood that the fence post may be of any construction and provided with. one or more openings 2 according to the number of wire engaging elements 3 designed for each post.
A plate, strip, or like part 4: constitutes elements 3 are shown as hooks it is to be understood that they may have any form so long as they serve the purpose of engaging the fence wire 5 or other form of wire fencing. While the strip or body l is shown as provided with three wire engaging elements 3 it is to be understood that it may carry any number of such elements. The body of the fastening is disposed within the post and against a wing thereof as shown most clearly in Fig. 3. One or more lips 6 project laterally from the body 4iand constitute abutments for fastening-s 7 which act by a wedging action to cause the elements 3 to grip the fence wires 5 and secure them to the post- The lips or abutments 6 occupy an angular position and the outer edges of the fastenings 7 are beveled to correspond with the in clination of the lips 6. Fig. 3. In this manner the fastenings 7 are prevented from lateral displacement. In the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the fastening-s 7 consist of wedges or keys which are forced between the lips 6 and the wings of the posts through which the wire engaging elements 3 pass.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4: the fastenings 7 consist of eccentrics which are pivotally connected to the body 4L and have operating extensions 7". The fastenings 7 operate by a binding action as Will be readily understood.
In the operation of the invention the fence wires are engaged with the hooks 3 of the fastening members after which the securing members 7 or 7' are operated to effect positive movement of the body 4 whereby the wire engaging elements 3 are drawn inward and grip the wires in a manner to prevent displacement thereof.
The foregoing description and the drawing have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in constructionand arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A fence post provided With a plurality of openings in its length, a retaining member at one side of the post and having a corresponding number of wire engaging elements extending through the openings thereof, and wedging means mounted on the said. member and engaging the post to adjust the member laterally and cause the wire engag ing elements thereof to clamp the Wires against the post.
2. A fence post having a lateral opening, a retaining member at one side of the post and having a Wire engaging element extending through the opening thereof, and having a lateral extension and a Wedge at one side of the member and held thereto by the lateral extension thereof and cooperating with the lateral extension and post to move the member laterally to clamp the wire against the post.
3" In combination, a post having a plurality of openings in its length a retaining member at one side of the post and provided with a plurality of wire engaging elements extending through the openings thereof and having a plurality of lateral abutments and Wedges cooperating with said abutments and post to effect lateral adjustment of the memher to clamp the wires against the post.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
