HOG-SCRAPER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL F. NAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hog-Scrapers, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to hog scrapers and has for its object the provision of a new and improved machine of this character in which the number of appliances necessary to completely and thoroughly dehair and polish a hog has been reduced to a minimum.
In a specific form of the invention I utilize a plurality of dehairing devices which in general are disk-like in shape carrying dehairing elements upon one face of the disk. These elements are so placed in the machine that they serve the dual purpose of supporting and dehairing the hog.
My invention further contemplates in one of its forms suitable means for rotating the hog while the dehairing devices are operat ing upon it. These means for rotating the hog may serve at the same time for ejecting the hog from the machine when the dehairing and polishing operation has been completed.
I will describe my invention more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawings. in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved machine;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1, the conveyor element being omitted for the sake of clearness, and
3 is atop view of the machine.
Figs. 4- and 5 are respectively front and side views of one of the dehairing devices.
The machine of my invention comprises a suitable framework having the legs 10 suitably placed adjacent a scalding tank 11. The framework is preferably rectangular and includes the top cross pieces 12 which project to the right, as shown more clearly in Fig. 1, to support certain parts of the mechanism, as will presently appear. Further cross-pieces 13 are placed centrally at the sides of the machine. The framework is also suitably held together longitudinally by Specification of Letters Patent.

angle irons such as 14 and 15. Diagonal end pieces 16 are shown provided to strengthen the machine and to support a channel iron 1? which, as will presently appear, carries the bearings for the dehairing devices.
There are four dehairing devices 18, 19, 20 and 21. These devices include a disk-like structure preferably in the form of a circular casting having depressions :22, and along one of the side walls ofeach of which depressions the dehairing elements 23 are secured preferably by being bolted to the wall of said depression by the bolts 24 1). Each dohairing device is mounted upon a shaft 25, which shaft is carried in suitable bearings provided upon the channel iron 1?. and the extremity of each shaft is provided with a bevel gear 26. These gears in. turn mesh with cooperating bevel gears 27 carried by a shaft 28, which shaft is driven. directly by the pulley 29. In the particular structure herein disclosed the arrangement of the bevel gears 27 is such that two of the dehairing devices rotate in one direction, while the other two dehairing devices rotate in the opposite direction. In this manner the hog is held in its central position and is not carried off by the action of the heaters or dehairing elements carried by the dehairing devices. The hog rests directly upon the dehairing devices. The space between the dehairing devices may be suitably filled in with any suitable material such as a casting or otherwise, not shown herein however. so as to prevent the legs of the animal from falling in between any two dehairing devices. A similar form of such filler plate is shown in my co-pending application Serial No. 236.106, filed May 23, 1918. Adjacent the dehairing devices I provide a conveyer 30 having the angles 31. which conveyer suitably passes about sprockets 32, 33. The sprocket 33 is fixedly secured to the shaft 34, which shaft (Fig. 2) is driven directly from the shaft 28 through the inter position of the sprocket chain 35 and sprocket wheel carried respectively by the said shafts 28 and 34C. The conveyer 30 which rotates in a contra-clockwise direction (Fig. 1) rotates the hog at the same time that the rotating heaters dehair and polish it. The sprocket wheels 32 are suitably monnted upon a shaft 36, which shaft is carried on the lower extremity of the link 37. As this link 37 moves up and down, the path of the shaft 36 is regulatedby its movement within the slot 38. The object of moving the shaft 36 and thus lowering the left hand extremity of the conveyer (Fig. 1) is to permit the conveyer to discharge or eject the hog from the machine after the dehairing operation has been completed. The mechanism which controls this actuation of the left hand extremity of the conveyer will be presently described.
The description hitherto given of the actual means which perform the dehairing and polishing operation will indicate that the rotating dehairing devices not only dehair and polish the hog, but at the same time support it during this operation. It will also be apparent that there is but one gang or set of dehairing devices, by which T mean that there are a plurality of similar and similarly mounted and operating dehairing devices. The words similarly operating however must of course include the relative opposite rotation of the dehairing devices 19 and 20, for instance.

The hogto be dehaircd is taken from the scalding tank 11 and is deposited upon a siutable cradle which cradle is pivotaily supported by the hanger 40. This hanger carries at its upper entren'iity a roller L1 to guide it in its 'ravel within the slot 42. A link is also pivotally united to the hanger and is united at its opposite extremity to a hoisting rope it. These hoisting ropes are suitably arranged and pass over a plurality of sheaves 45, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3, the extremities of the ropes being fastened to framework 46 carrying the second set of pulleys or sheaves. The framework 46 is moved to the right or left (Fig. 1) as it is desired to raise or lower the cradle 39. It will be seen that a very slight movemeir of the frame work 4C6 causes a movement many times multiplied of the cradle 39 due to the paticular arrangement of the pulleys. -he framework L6 forum part of an eccentri strap 17 which cooperates with the eccentric 4:8. The eccentrics 48 are mounted upon the shaft 49 and this shaft is periodically actuated whenever it is 'desired to introduce an undehaired hog into the machine. The shaft l9 also carries a cam 50, which cam, as will presently appear, controls the up and down movement of the shaft 36. Thus, whenever the shaft 49 is rotated. the con veyer is lowered to discharge the hog from the machine at the same time that the cradle 39 is raised to introduce afresh hog into the machine. The runway or slot a2 is provided in a casting 51, suitably carried by the fran'iework of the machine. This casting likewise carries two rollers 52 and 53 to assist in guiding the hanger it) as it moves from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 to its dotted position as shown in the same figure.
In order to operate the shaft 1 provide a sprocket wheel 54:. which through the agency of the chain is driven from the sprocket wheel 56. This sprocket wheel 56 on the shaft 3% is adapted for connection with said shaft through the agency of the coupling 57. This coupling 57 is controlled by the handle 58. Thus whenever the dehairing operation of a hog within the machine has been completed the operator directs the handle 58 to the right (Fig. 3), whereupon the left hand extremity of the conveyer 30 (Fig. 1) is low red at the same time that the cradle 39 is raised to deposit a fresh hog into the machine. The conveyer 30, as already explained, is continuously operated both when the hog is being" discharged and when it is in the machine, as this conveyer serves to rotate the hog while it is being dehaired. The cam 50 cooperates with a suitable roller 52*, which roller is carried by an arm 60 pivoted in the framework of the machine at 61. The arm 60 at its right hand extremity (Fig. l) pivotally supports the link 37. The shape of the cam 50 is such that immediately the handle 58 is operated, the left hand conveyer extremity is lowered to discharge the hog. The conveyer remains in that position during about one-half of a revolution of the shaft a9, whereupon it is replaced in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and remains that way during thelater revolution of the shaft 49. It will be understood that but one complete rotation of the shaft 49 is needed for introducing and discharging hogs. During the first half of the revolution of the shaft 19 the cradle 39 is being raised and it is some time during" the latter half of the revolution of the shaft -29 that the cradle 39 reaches the dotted position shown in Fig. 1. at which time it deposits a hog into the position where it may be dehaired by the dehairing devices and rotated by the conveyer.
From this description the nature of my invention will be readily clear and it will be apparent that the illustrations and descriptionanerely set forth one form of carrying out my invention. Various modifications may be made without departing from its spirit, all within the scope of the appended claims:
1. In dehairingmachine of the character described a plurality of dehairing devices each operating upon the carcass in a circular path and an inclined conveyer. said dehairing devices and conveyer being mounted in manner to support said carcass between them during the dehairing operation.
2. In a dehairing machine of the character described, a plurality of dehairing devices'each operating upon the carcass in a circular path, said dehairing devices being mounted in a manner to support said carcass during the dehairine; operation, certain of said dehairing devices rotating relatively in opposite directions.
3. In a dehairing machine of the character described, a plurality of dehairing devices each operating upon the carcass in a circular path, said dehairing devices being mounted in a manner to support said carcass during the dehairing operation, and means for rotatingthe carcass during the dehairing operation, the carcass being supported only by the dehairing devices and the means. i
4. In a dehairing machine of the character described, a plurality or" dehairing devices each operating upon the carcass in a circular path, said dehairing devices being mounted in a manner to support said carcass during the dehairing operation, certain of said dehairing devices rotating relatively in opposite directions, and means for rotating the carcass during the dehairing operation.
5. In a dehairing machine of the character described, a plurality of dehairing devices each operating upon the carcass in a circular path, said dehairing devices being mounted in a manner to support said carcass during the dehairing operation, means for rotating the carcass during the dehairing operation, and means for actuating said means to eject the carcass from the machine.
6. In a dehairing machine of the charac ter described, a plurality of dehairing devices each operating upon the carcass in a circular path, said dehairing devices being mounted in a manner to support said carcass during the dehairing operation, certain of said dehairing devices rotating relatively in opposite directions, means for rotating the carcass during the dehairing operation, and means for actuating said means to eject the carcass from the machine.
7. In a dehairing machine of the character described, a plurality of dehairing devices each operating upon the carcass in a circular path, said dehairing devices being mounted in a manner to support said carcass during the dehairing operation, means for rotating the carcass during the dehairing operation, means for actuating said means to eject the carcass from the machine, and means operable during the ejection of a carcass for introducing another carcass within the field of operation of said dehairing devices.
8. In a dehairing machine of the character described, a plurality of dehairing devices each operating upon the carcass in a circular path, said dehairing devices being mounted in a manner to support said carcass during the dehairing operation, certain of said dehairing devices rotating relatively in opposite directions, means for rotating the carcass during the dehairing operation, means for actuating said means to (ijGIJ the carcass from the machine, and means operable during the ejection of a carcass for introducing another carcass within the field of operation of said dehairing device.
9. In a dehairing machine of the character described, a plurality of dehairing devices each operating upon the carcass in a circular path, said dehairing devices being mounted in a manner to support said carcass during the dehairing operation, and means operable simultaneously for discharging a carcass from the machine and introducing another carcass into the machine.
10. In a dehairing machine of the character described, the combination with dehairing devices adapted to support a carcass at their ends, of a conveyor operable to rotate the carcass, and means for actuating said conveyor periodically to discharge the car cass from the machine.
11. In a dehairing machine of the character described the combination with a plurality of dchairing devices, of a cradle adapted to support a carcass and carry it into the field of operation of said dehairing devices, a guide for the cradle and means for actuating said cradle, said means including a series of compound pulleys and an eccentric.
12. A hog dehairing machine having a plurality of dehairing devices having deha-iring elements operating in a substantially circular path of contact on the surface of the carcass throughout the entire travel of said dehairing elements. said dehairing devi es being mounted so that the carcass rests thereon.
18. A hog dehairing machine having a plurality of dehairing devices provided with elements operating in a circular path of contact on the surface of the carcass, the center line of the carcass being in substantial coincidence with the axis of rotation of said dehairing devices, said dehairin devices being mounted so that the carcass rests thereon.
14. A device of the character described comprising a framework, dehairing mechanism mounted thereon, a scalding tank, a curved guideway extending from the tank to the framework and a cradle movable on said guideway for transferring a carcass from. the tank to the dehairing mechanism.
15. A. devi e of the character described comprising rotatable dehairing devices positioned with their faces at an angle and adapted to support a carcass resting against said faces and an inclined conveyer located adjacent said devices and adapted to support and rotate the carcass resting'against said faces.
16. A device of the character described comprising two sets of rotatable carcass supporting devices having fiat supporting faces positioned at an angle to each other, one of said devices having dehairing elements secured thereto.
17. A device of the character described comprising a rotatable carcass supporting and dehairing member positioned With its active face at an angle to the vertical and an endless chain conveyer adapted to support and rotate the carcass against the face of the member.
18. In a device of the character described comprising a conveyer and a dehairer each positioned at an angle to the other so as to CARL F. NAYER.
