WILLIAM P. KRAnsE, OE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS; .essIGNoR 'ro MUMFORD MOLDING MACHINE COMPANY, OE CHICAGO', ILLINOIS,` A CORPOEATON or NEW JERSEY.
Application filed .Tune 26, 1916.
To all whom imag concern.-
Be it known that WILL-IAM I). a citizen of the United Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plunger-Guide Construction, of which the following is a specification. j
This invention relates to improvements in plunger guide construction, and more especiallyv to that type of molding machine in which a plunger or piston reciprocates in a cylinder. The main object is to provide, such machines, j means v y KRASE, States, residing at in combination with for guiding the reciprocal movement of the plunger, such means being adjustable to compensate for wear, and also functioning to lubricate the plunger member in its move ment.
Another object resides in the provision of a plurality of plunger guiding means, each of which is separately adjustable, so that as one portion of the machine wears more than another, the greater wear may be readily compensated for, thereby7 insuring proper centering of the plunger member and the allied mechanism. These and other objects of the invention will be more fully set forth and described in the following specifica-tion and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through a machine embodying my invention, the table thereof being shown in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section, taken along the line 2*2 of Eig. 1.
Eig. 3 is an elevation of one of the guiding` members in position; and
Eig. 4c is a perspective view of the same disassembled.
Like numerals refer to like elements throughout the drawings .in.whioh 10 indicates the base of my machine, upon which is suitably mounted and attached a cylinder 11. in which the plunger 12 is arranged to reciprocate, said plunger carrying the mold table 13. This general type of machine is a plain jolt machine embodying therein what is lmown as the Mumford-Huggins val've construction, illustrated and described in Patent No. 1,167,511, of January 11, 1916.
It is not believed to be necessary to describe the valve mechanism herein, as the saine forms no component part of the present invention.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 20, 1920. Serial No. 105,997.
' vided,`the same being constructed with peripheral flanges or collars 1l and arranged for attachment to the collars 11b by means of the studs or bolts 15, as shown in Fig. 2. These guiding members project into the cylinder 11, and abut against the flattened surfaces 12l of the plungers, shims to an)7 desired extent being interposed between the flanges 14a and the collars 11b. The guid ing members la are centrally apertured and hollowed out, as indicated by numeral 14th, and the cavity so provided is filled with fibrous material, suoli as waste felt, or the like, indicated by the numeral 17, the saine being compressed to a suitable degree. A filler opening 14C is provided, in which is threaded a plug lil", having an aperture 14e therethrough, this .aperture being normally closed by a. plug lati. Either the opening 14C or the aperture 14e may be utilized for pouring oil or other lubricant into the cavity 1l, to saturate the fibrous material which bears against the surface of the plungers and maintains the same in a constantly lubricated condition.
In the functioning' of the apparatus shown, as wear takes place it may be compensated for by removal of one or more of the shims, and consequent advancing of the guiding plugs or members, and, as often happens in this art, when the center of gravity of the load carried by the table 13 does not coincide with the axes of the plunger unequal wear results on different surfaces of the plunger, rendering it advantageous to provide individual adjustable guiding mem1 bers for the purpose of compensating for such unequal wear. This separate compensation renders it possible properly to center and maintain in centered position the plunger. At the same time the construction a'bove described maintains the plunger in lubricz-ted condition.
Cil
It will bev obvious that my invention is susceptible of numerous modications or im provements, and I do not wish to be restricted to the form shown or described beyond the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In molding apparatus, in combination with a cylinder and plunger reciproca ble therein, a plurality of separately adjustable guiding means adjustable relatively to said plunger and bearing thereagainst.
2. In combination With a cylinder having a reciprorable plunger therein, separately adjusting guiding members lying against said plunger, and lubricating means carried by each of said guiding members.
In combination with a cylinder having a reciprocable plunger therein7 independently adjustable guiding members bearing against said plunger and lubricating means ,carried by said guiding means.
4L. In combination with a cylinder having a plunger reciprooably mounted therein, separately adjustable guiding members carried b v said cylinder and bearing against said plunger, and shims inserted between said guiding members and cylinder.
5. In combination, a cylinder, a plunger reciprocably mounted therein, said cylinder being provided With side apertures, and guide members inserted through said apertures and bearing against said plunger.
6. In combination, a cylinder, a plunger reciprocably mounted therein, said cylinder being provided with side apertures, iianges surrounding said apertures, and guide members inserted through said apertures and bearing against said plunger, said guide members being secured to said flanges.'
7. In combination, a cylinder, a plunger reciprocably mounted therein, -said cylinder being provided with side apertures, hollow guide members passing through said apertures into engagement with said plunger and being movable to provide for adjust-I ment oi' said plunger, and lubricating means in said hollow guide members and in contaet with said plunger.
In testimony whereof, I have subscribed my name.
IVILLIAM P. KRAUSE. IVitnesses JAMES T. LEE, PHILETUS WV. GATES.
