ARIVLBINDER AND ELEVATING CONTROL-SHAFT LOCK.
Application filed May 2, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES CLYDE HALDE- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Arm-Binder and Elevating Control- Shaft Look, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to drilling machines in which an arm for supporting the drill head is carried upon a vertical column and power means is provided for raising and lowering the arm and has more especial reference to means for clamping the arm in adjusted positions upon the column and at the same time locking the raising and lowering means.
In drilling machines of the character above referred to it is a practice to clamp the arm in different positions upon the column and to unclamp the arm when it is desired to raise or lower it upon the column, suitable power propelled means being provided for the raising or lowering of the drill arm. If through carelessness of the operator the power propelled means for raising or lowering the arm is put into motion while the arm is still clamped upon the column considerable damage to the machine will result.
The object of the invention is to provide means for preventing the power propelled means for raising and lowering the arm from being put into operation during the time that the arm is clamped upon the column; to provide means for locking the power propelled means in the inoperative position when the arm is clampedto the column; and to generally simplify and improve drilling machines.
The objects of the invention may be attained by providing in combination with the usual column and drill arm and elevating screw, an elevating control shaft and means for locking said shaft in the inoperative position when the arm is locked to the column.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 20, 1920.
Serial No. 294,186.
minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
The invention thus set forth in general terms is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a drilling machine embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on an enlarged scale on the line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the clamping arms.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the clamping plates.
Fig. 5 is a section on- Fig. 6 is a cated in the column.
A practical embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the bed of the drilling machine is indicated generally by the numeral 1 and supports the base 2 of the inner column 5*, the usual arm which carries the drilling mechanism being indicated at 4 as slidably mounted upon the outer column 3 and a base cap 5 being shown upon the outer column above the base portion 2.
A suitable drill head 6 is carried by the drill arm and contains the usual drill spindle 7 which is arranged to carry a drill of any usual and well known construction.
The drill arm is arranged to be moved vertically upon the outer column by means of the usual screw shaft 8 and is provided with the usual clamp bearing 9 about the column for the purpose of clamping the drill arm in adjusted positions upon the column.
The threaded shaft 8 is journaled in a bearing 10 in the base cap 5 and in a bearing 11 in the top 12 of the column, said shaft having threaded connection with a threaded bearing in the arm 4 in the usual manner. Suitable means are provided for rotating the screw shaft in opposite directions accomplished in the present instance line 55, Fig. 1. plan view of the gearing lohousing at the upper end of the by providing a gear 13 fast upon the upper extremity of the screw shaft 8 within the top or housing 12. An upright shaft let is journaled inside of the inner column in the usual manner and is rotated by means of suitable gearing (not shown) operated through the power pulley 15. The pinions 16 and 17 are fast upon the shaft 14:, the pinion 16 meshing with the gear 18 which is carried upon a stub shaft 19, a pinion 20 being rotatable with the gear 18. A bell crank 21 is pivoted upon the upper end of the screw shaft 8 and carries a pinion 22 which meshes with the gear 13 and is adapted to be moved into mesh with either the pinion 20 or the pinion 17 this movement being accomplished through the gear segment 23 provided upon One arm of the bell crank and meshing with the pinion 24: which is fast to the upper end of the elevating con trol shaft 25 which is journaled within a suitable bearing 26 in the housing 12 and a bearing 27 in the collar 5 and is provided with a rock arm 28 by which it is operated.
As above stated the drill arm has a bearing 9 around the outer column which hearing is a clamp bearing and is provided with slots 29 at its upper and lower ends, lugs 30 and 31 being provided at opposite sides of each slot 29. Each lug 31 is provided with a vertical bearing portion 32 having therein a vertical half round groove 33 arranged to receive the elevating control shaft 25.
A clamp screw 3% is located through each pair of bearings 30-31, said screw being screw threaded for a portion of its length at each extremity, an adjusting nut 35 being placedupon the extremity of said screw eX- tending through the lug 30 and a set screw 36 being provided through said lug to hold the clamping screw in any desired adjustment.
An annular enlargement 37 is formed upon the clamping screw intermediate its extremities and arranged to be located with in the socket 38 formed upon the outer side of the lug 31. By adjusting the adjusting nut 35 to the desired point and tightening the set screw 36 the proper tension permanently desired upon the clamp bearing 9 about the'column may be obtained.
In order to clamp the clamp bearing 9 tightly upon the column in any adjusted position and at the same time clamp the elevating control shaft against rotation a clamping plate 39 is mounted upon the outer extremity of each clamp screw, each clamping plate 39 being provided with an inwardly disposed rib 40 arranged to contact with the lug 31 and with a half round bearing portion 41 which engages the elevating control shaft.
A clamping lever 42 provided with a threaded barrel portion 43 is threaded upon theextremity ofeachof the clampingscrews .tion, raising the arm t upon the column.
and engages the outer surface of the adjacent clamping late 39. Each of the clamping levers is provided with a stop lug 4.4 arranged for engagement with a suitable portion of the arm in order to limit the downward movement of the lever.
When the clamping levers 42 are operated to release the clamp bearing 9, upon the arm, and also the elevating control shaft 25, the operating lever 28 may be moved to the right rocking the shaft 25 sufficiently to move the bell crank 21, through the pinion 24 and gear segment 23, a sufficient distance to bring the pinion 22 into mesh with the pinion 20, this being the position of the parts shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing. The gear 13 will then, through the chain of gears above described, be rotated, rotating the screw shaft 8 in the proper direction to cause the arm 4: to move downwardly upon the column 3, the drill carried thereby being operated in the usual manner.
l/Vhen it is desired to clamp the arm in any adjusted position upon the column the operating lever 28 is rocked to the left to disengage the pinions 22 and 20 thus stopping the rotation of the screw shaft 8. The clamping levers are then moved into the clamping position drawing the lugs 30 and 31 together, tightening the clamp bearing 9 around the column and clamping the elevating control shaft 25 between the bearing portion 29 and the clamping plates 39. This is the position of the parts shown in Fig. 1
of the drawings.
It will thus be seen that it will be impossible to put the elevating and lowering mechanism into operation while the parts are thus clamped as the operating lever 28 which controls the operation of the elevating and lowering mechanism cannot be moved until the clamping levers 42 are moved into the unclamped position.
It will be noted that the clamping and unclamping of the clamp bearing 9 about the column and the clamping plates upon the elevating control shaft are simultaneous, both parts being clamped or unclamped by the same movement of the clamping levers.
When it is desired to elevate the arm a the operating lever 28 is moved to the left a sufficient distance to bring the pinion 22 into mesh with the pinion 17, thus rotating the screw shaft 8 in the opposite direc- In Fig. 6 is illustrated the means of clamping the outer column upon the inner column, the outer column being arranged to be clamped in any adjusted radial position upon the inner column by means of the 001- umn clamp bolt 15, which is constructed similarly to the clamping bolts 34: and is located through the lugs 46 and 47 formed upon the base cap 5 ofthe outer column. An annular. enlargement 4:8 is formed interme- 13o diate the extremities of the clamping bolt and designed to be located within a socket 49 formed in the outer face of the lug 47.
Both extremities of the clamp bolt are screw threaded, an adjusting nut 50 being threaded upon one extremity and bearing against the outer face of the lug 46 while the column clamp handle 51 is threaded upon the other extremity of the bol awasher 52 being preferably interposed be tween the clamp handle and the outer surface of the lug 4:7.
The nut 50 is adjusted sufliciently to draw the lugs t6 and 47 together, tightening the base cap 5 of the outer column 3 upon the inner column 5 ust sufiiciently to allow the outer column to be rotated upon the inner column. In order to clamp the outer column in any adjusted radial position upon the inner column the column clamp handle 51 is operated, drawing the lugs 46 and 4-7 still closer together and clamping the base cap 5 tightly upon the inner column 5. A set screw 53 similar to the set screw 36 shown in Fig. 2 is provided in the lug 46 and arranged to bear upon the column clamp bolt 45 to pre vent movement of the same after it has been properly adjusted by the adjusting nut 50.
I claim- 1.
