To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HAMMER, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Queens, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Closures, of which the following is a speci-v fication.
This invention relates to the construction of articles of a cylindrical or cup shaped form, and is especially designed for caps or closures for bottles and similar containers.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved form of the side joint or seam, where the cylindrical portion is constructed from a flat blank or strip that is bent around and the meeting edges caused to inter-engage, by means of specially bent portions without the use of external means or members to hold the ends of the strip together.
A further object of this invention is to provide a joint of this character in which the lapping ends are caused to lnter-engage, and in which the raw edges of the end portions of the strip will be concealed.
In the accompanying drawing showing one embodiment ofmy invention, Figure 1 shows the blank for the cylindrical member. Fig. 2 shows the blankwith the end portions bent over. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the blank as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4: shows the finished closure. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the cl0Sure. Fig. 6 shows enlarged the joint, being a partial section on the line' 6-6 of Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 shows enlarged a partial section on the line 77 of Fig. 5.
In Fig. 1, I show the blank comprising a strip 8 having at one end a tongue 9 of less wi'dth'than the blank, and which preferably has the ends 10 and 11 cut obliquely to the end. This tongue is bent over toward the face 12 of the blank, see Fig. 3, to form a channel, for engagement with channel portions on the other end of the blank.
At the other end of the blank is a projection 13 that is doubled over flat against the opposite face 14 of the blank,from the face 12 toward which the tongue 9 is bent. At each end of the double projection 13 are corner portions 15 and 16 that areformed by cutting away portions at 17 and 18 in the blank. These corner portions 15 and 16 are bent over toward the face 14 onoblique lines that connect the edges of the corner portions, as indicated 1n Fig. 2, and these corner portions are at first left offset fromthe face 14 to form channels.
The blank is thereupon bent to a curve on its longitudinal axis tob-ring the ends together, preferably with the 'face 14 outwardly. The bent tongue 9 is caused to engage the edges 19 and 20 of the bent corners 15 and 16 and to extend at its end portions between these corners and the opposite portion of the blank. Thereupon lateral pressure is applied to these meeting arts and the bent tongue 9 as well as the bent corner.

At the middle portion of the joint, as shown in Fig. 6, the tongue 9 is pressed flat against the adjacent portion of the blank; while the projection 13 lies flat against the end portion of the blank on the inner face. Thereby the edge 21 on the outer face of the finished closure will be the bend on the line indicated by the broken line in Fig. 1. On the inside of the closure at the middle portion the bend 22 is indicated by the broken .line 22 in Fig. 1 on which the projection 13 is doubled flatagainst the blank.
As stated the end portions of the bent tongue 9 engage the bent corner portions '15 and 16, whereby the edge 21 of the tongue 9 will engage the corner portions .at the edges 19 and 20. The tongue 9 hasits ends 10 and 11 cut oblique to permit this entrance, and the parts can be so designed that these edges 10 and 11 will engage the portions 23 and 2/1 at the bottomof the bent corners 15 and 16, that will increase the strength of the joint. I
It will be further seen that the edge 8 of the tongue 9, and the edge 25 of the projection 13, may be brought into engagement, as indicated in Fig. 5. From the section of Fig. 6' it will be understood that at the middle line a section would show that at no part is there more than three thicknesses of metal. Where the tongue- 9 engages the bent corner portions, four thicknesses are formed over a small area, at each corner portion,
as shown in Fig. 7.
A structure of this kind is usually employed with an end member or disk 26 suitably secured as by an inter-locking joint, and the blank along one longitudinal edge beyond the corner 15 and the tongue 9, may be used for this purpose, to inter-lock with the end member.
At the other longitudinal edge of the blank, the portion beyond the corner and the tongue may be given a roll or bead 28 to inclose the-raw edge, and for strengthening purpose, as shown in Fig. 4.
As stated,the edge 21 on the outside of the closure, between the top inter-lock, and the bottom bead, is formed by the bend of the tongue 9, that is bent inwardly and therefore the raw edge is entirely concealed.
On the inner face, as shown in Fig. 5, the bend of the projection 13 at 22 conceals the raw edge at the middle portion, while the bends of the corner portions on the lines 23 and 24, conceal the raw edge between the edge 6 and the top and bottom of the closure. By this means a very strong interengagement by integral means is provided, and except at two small areas, only three thicknesses of material is formed, so that the usual bulge caused where a double interlock of four thicknesses is employed, is eliminated.
Closures of this character usually have a corrugated end in the form of a screwthread 27 to engage threads on a bottle.
This thread will include one of the corner' portions but not the other, and extend be-' yond such corner portions. 'These corner portions where the four thicknesses of material prevail, occupy but a small space and do not extend from top to bottom as with the usual inter-locking joint.
What I claim is:
'1. 5. A closure comprising a body formed of a metal strip bent into the form of a cylinder with the ends secured together, such securing means comprising one end of the strip being provided with a tongue having inclined sides which is bent back toward one face to ,form a channel, the other strip end being provided with a projection which is doubled back .against the strip on the opposite face from said tongue bend at the other end, the strip also having corner portions adjacent the ends of said doubled projection that, are each bent down on a line oblique to such end to form open channels on the same face of the strip as the doubled projection, the said tongue end portionsbeing caused to enter beneath said bent corner portions respectively to engage the tongue channel by the inclined side edges of the tongue, said end ortions bein pressed together to form, an mterlocking at side joint, the raw edge of thesaid bent projection and the raw edge of the said projection being I at the top and'at the bottom beyond the said doubled margins, the lower portion of the body being corrugated to form screw threads that cross said doubled margins and which intersect said holding means.
7. A closure cap comprising an end disk, and a body formed of a sheet metal strip bent into the form of a cylinder with the ends lapping, the body being connected at the top with the disk edge, the lower end of the body being beaded, each margin of the lapping ends of the strip being doubled back on the strip and located between the lapping ends with the doubled parts out of engagement, integral holding means between i the lapping body end portions located at the top disk connection and at the bottom beaded edge and beyond the said doubled margins, the lower portion of the body being corrugated to form screw threads that cross said doubled margins and which intersect said holding means, and are free from the beaded portion.
8. A closure cap comprising an end disk, and a body formed of a sheet metal strip bent into the forfn of a cylinder with the ends lapping, the body being interlocked at a the top with the disk margin, one of the lapping ends of the strip being bent back toward one face to form a channel, the othe'r end portion havin its margin doubled back, and provided at t e top and also at the bottom with a hook portion, which bent hook portions are bent oblique to the doubled margin to extend oppositely and which engage respectively the said oblique end ed es of the channel portion, whereby to ho d the body portions together at the top and bottom and prevent relative sliding movement of one end portion on the face of the other end portion in the direction of said channel bend, the body having the lower end beaded, the said hook portion at the top being free from the interlocked disk connection.
9. A closure cap comprising an endv disk,
and a body formed of a sheet metal strip bent into the form of a cylinder with the ends lapping, the bodybeing interlocked at the top with the disk margin, one of the lapping ends of the strip being bent back toward one face to form a channel, the other end portion having its margin doubled'back and provided at the top and also at the bottom with a hookportion, which bent hook portions are bent oblique to the doubled margin to extend oppositely and engage the said channel portion, whereby to hold the body portions together at the top and bottom and prevent relative sliding movement of one end portion on the face of the other end portion in the direction of said channel bend, the bodyhaving the lower end beaded, the bottom of said hook portion being free from the beaded lower end.
