MULTIPLE-BLADE TYPE-MOLD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 7, 1918. Serial No. 238,731.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN SELLERS BAN- CROFT and AMos L. KNIGHT, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiple-Blade Type- Molds; and we do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention relates to improvements in type molds, such as those adapted to be used in connection with typesetting machines and has forv its general objects to produce a mold capable of castinga variety of type sizes, such a mold being conveniently provided with dimensioning and ejecting mechanism in the form of a plu rality of blades, certain of which can be connected for operation while the remaining are locked in closed, inoperative position, the blades preferably being arranged side by side; to produce a mold for casting type composed of portions at right angles to each other, such as type having a vertical body portion and a horizontal face bearing overhang or platform portion, a mold of this kind being povided with dimensioning and ejecting mechanism having action or effect upon both the body and the overhang portion of the type. More specifically the invention has for its purpose to produce an overhang or platform type mold having a main mold blade of type shoulder height and a plu rality of supplemental blades slidable on a reduced portion of one of the type blocks of the mold, the supplemental blades aiding in the formation and ejection of the platform part of the type while the main blade is concerned with the formation and ejection of the body of the type. Proper adjustment of the supplemental blades make it possible to produce types of a variety of point sizes, the body portion of the type, however, being unvarying in point size. Further objects and purposes of the present invention will be hereinafter pointed out or will otherwise appear in connection with the following description of the embodiment of the inventionshown in the accompanying drawings in which line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the mold blades and their adjusting devices, certain of the stationary parts of the mold being shown broken away and insection,
Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the mold substantially on line 4:4t of Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is a detail lan view showing the mold blades and thelr adjusting devices, a part of the mold blade shoesbeing broken away.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing some of the stationary parts of the mold in separated relation,
Fig. 7 is a vertical cross section substantially on line 77 of Fig. 1, and.
Figs. 8 and 9 are perspective views of two sizes of types produceable from the mold.
The mold chosen to illust-ate an embodiment of the invention is of a type well known as manufactured by Lanston Monotype Machine Company and comprises generally a base block having a nozzle opening for the admission of molten type metal to the mold cavity, a water base and squaring block, stationary type or side blocks forming twoside walls of the said cavity, a mold blade movable between said type blocks and forming with its forward end another side wall of said cavity, a cross block movable in a path at right angles to the path of movement of said blade and forming the fourth side wall of the cavity, gate blocks and a jet pusher.
A mold of this type is conveniently operated when employed as part of a type casting machine of the kind, for example, disclosed in the United States patent issued to J. Sellers Bancroft, No. 625,998, dated 30th, 1899. This machine operates the mold blade and the cross block in timed Patented Jan. 20, 1920.. I
sition and the way is free for the type to be pushed into the type carrier or other device forming a part of the mechanism for discharging the type upon the galley of the machine.
The drawings show a mold of the general kind discussed above and embodying the present invention but they include no part of the casting machine and connections thereof, which, it is to be understood, are required for the successful commercial operation of the mold. The base plate or block 8 is a flat plate adapted to be secured to a suitable casting machine and is provided with a nozzle opening 9 for cooperation with the casting mechanism of said machine. Secured to the top of the base plate along the front A edge thereof is the abutment 10 carrying the shoe 11 adjustable by means of the set screws 12. This construction as well as that of the cross block 13 and gate blocks 14:, 14:, slidable on the base plate and between the shoe 11 and the type blocks to be hereinafter described, and of the gate pusher 15 (Fig. 2) and its cam 16 is similar to that of well known molds and need not be further described here: it will be understood also that the whole mold structure shown has many of the features and characteristics of the structures set forth in prior patents such, as for example, that to Amos L. Knight No. 1,219,956, dated March 20th, 1917, and which will be at once recognized by those skilled in the art.
Also mounted directly on the base plate 8 is the water base and squaring block 17, the general shape of which is best shown in Fig. 6. The upward extensions 17 17 of the squaring block 17 form a channel between them in which the small type or side block 18 is located but which it does not com pletely fill; it leaves a space between it and the extension 17 for the main mold blade as will be described hereinafter.
The small type or side block 18 has a portion 18 adjacent the mold cavity, the height of which is reduced so as to be substantially low quad high and a lower supplemental blade supporting portion 18"; the block is secured to the squaring block 17 and to the base block 8 by screws 19, (Fig. 4.) through the bottom of the base block; it is also secured to the extension 17 of the squaring block by screws 19 (Fig. 4) through screw holes 19 (Fig. in the squaring and small type blocks. When the screws 19' are drawn tight the type block 18 will be spaced from the extension 17 suflicient to allow of a sliding fit between the block 18 and the extension 17, of the type shoulder high main mold blade 20 the bottom of which slides upon the squaring block 17. The mold blade stop 21 is secured by screws to the side of the extension 17 and has a reduced. end projecting into an elongated aperture in the mold blade; the end walls of the aperture are adapted" to come into contact with said reduced end of the stop at the extremes of the forward and rearward movements of the mold blade so that the stop 21 serves to limit such movements.
The large type or side block 22 is secured to the squaring block 17 and the base block 8 by screws 28 through the bottom of the base block, and to the extension 17 of the squaring block by screws through the screw holes 24; (Fig. 6) in the squaring block and the said type block. One vertical face of the large type block forms a-fcontinuation of the end wall of the extension 17 which contacts with the mold blade 20 and so itself contacts with and guides said blade. Another vertical face of said type block 22, which face is at right angles to the face previously mentioned, is in line with a corresponding face of the small type block 18 and with said last mentioned face forms a guiding slide for the cross block 13. It will now be seen that the mold cavity side walls are formed by the two type blocks, the cross block and the forward end of the mold blade: the jet cavity is located between the mold cavity and the nozzle opening 9 and is formed by walls of the squaring block 17, the two gate blocks 14:, 14 and the end of the gate pusher 15.
The large type block 22 is provided with a type shoulder high portion adjacent the cross block, a stepped portion, 22 slightly lower than the height of extension 17 (see Fig. 7) and an intermediate portion 22 the latter serving to support the shoe 25, cured to the step 22 by screws 26 through the holes 26 (Fig. 6).
Held against lateral movement between the shoe 25, the type block portion 22 and the extension 17 of the squaring block 17 but slidable in a direction at right angles to the blade 20 is the controllingslide or member 27 for the main mold blade 20 and the series of supplemental blades 20, 20",
20, 2O, 20 and 20 The main blade 20, as
the cut down portion referred to and is provided with an elongated aperture, said last mentioned portion engaging with the top surface of the cut down portion of the lower section, leaving a vertical wall to engage with. said gaging surface 28.. 'When the lower blade is moved inwardly, the gaging surface 28 will come against the downs Wardly extending portion of the upper blade 20 to carry said upper blade with the lower blade to correspondingly vary the size of the upper portion of the mold.
The supplemental blades 20 20, 20, 20, 20 and 2O are generally speaking similar in construction to the upper blade 20 described and are arranged side by side in slidingcontact with each other and between the side of the upper blade 20 and a lateral guiding portion 28, of the block 18, the said portion bringingthe block up to type shoulder height. The forward portions of the supplemental blades are slidableon the top of the reduced portion 18 of the small type block 18 and their apertured, downwardly extending portions are slidable on the top of the lower portion 18 of said b1ock18. The blade 20 is slidable against the side of the main mold blade upper section 20. The blade 20 has a one way or lost motion connection with the blade 20 in the form of a lug 29 at its rear end which extends laterally to contact with the rear end of the laterally extending lug 29 on supplemental blade 20*, the latter blade being shorter in length than the blade 20, by an amount equal to the width of the lug 29 in like manner the blades 20, 20, 20 and 20 have lateral lugs 29', 29, 29 and 29 respectively each blade being shorter than the immediately preceding blade by the width of the overlapping lug of the said preceding blade. The blade 20 being the last of the series, is not equipped with a lateral lug: This blade is shorter than blade 20 by the width of the lug 29 and the length of this lug isnot greater than the thickness of the blade 20. It will be seen from the above construction that when the forward ends of all the blades are in alinement their rear lugs will be nested in contact with each other, the lug 29 being in contact with the rear end of blade 20 furthermore, that a forward movement of the main blade, the upper section being moved by contact with the gag ing surface 28 of the lower section, will ac-r complish a forward movement in unison therewith of the supplemental blade 20" when the lug 29 of the upper section 20 of said main-blade has become nested with theelongated apertures provided in the downwardly extending portionsof the upper and supplemental blades, and theother end being connected by a spring 32to the post 33 fixed to thenmember 27. This member is provided also with. alocking extension 34 including. an angular projection 34 (Fig. 5) on its end, said locking extension also projecting intoisaid elongated apertures of the, upper and supplemental blades. The locking member 34 projects slightly farther into said apertures than the lever 30 so that when the latter contacts with themear walls of the apertures of any one, or more of the blades, the projection 34 of the locking member 34 at the same time contacts with the forward walls of the apertures of one or more of the succeeding blades in the series, particularly of that blade which is next in the series to the last engaged bythe lever 30, to the end that the latterblades are locked in closed, inoperative position. It is to be noted that the construction is such that the projection 34 cannot be entered into the blade apertures except at'the time that. the said blades are in closed position; the blades not held by the projection 34 either directly or through the nesting lugs but controlled by the lever 30 areopened or driven rearwardly by the force of the spring 32 acting through said lever, which spring at all times tends to maintain in .open position the blades controlled bythe'lever. Because the lever and the locking extension are secured to the same sliding element, the member 27, the lever and the extension are moved in unison when theislide is adjusted; hence, the relation is always preserved of locking against movement bladesfarther along in the series, than those the movement of which is controlled by the lever 30.-
In the device shown there are seven blades, counting the main blade-as a single blade, as it of course may be without affecting the invention herein, and the mold is capable of producing type or. seven different point sizes. In order to insure proper adjustment of the slide member 27, the latter is provided with seven notches 35 each corresponding with a blade: these notches as shown are numbered 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48-because whenthe slide is positioned with the notch 12 held by the detent 36 to bepresently described, the lever 30 and the locking bar 34 are positioned so that all of the blades are held locked in closed position except the main blade which, being 12 points in thickness, makes the mold suitable for producing 12 point type; when the notch 18 is engaged by the detent the lever 30 engages with both the mainblade and the supplemental blade 20" so that the two 'operatein unison, a forward movement of the main blade, dueto suitable connections with the mold operating mechanism (not shown) projecting into the aperture 37 (Fig. 2) of the lower section of said main blade, causin a similar movement of the supplemental lade' 20 against the yielding opposition of the lever 30 and spring32 by engagement of the lug 29 of the uppersection of the main blade with the 1ug29 of the said supplemental blade, this movement being permitted by the yielding of the spring 32; and the rearward movement of the supplemental blade following that of the main blade but due to the spring 32 and lever 30. The supplemental blade 20 is six points in thickness so that when this blade is operatively combined with the main 12 point blade themold is for 18 point type. The next supplemental blade 20 when coma bined with the main blade and the supplemental blade 2O by engaging the detent 36 with the notch 2 L produces a 24, point mold since the blade 20 is 6 points thick. It is to be noted that this'is the position of the parts as'shown in the drawings. Similarly since the remaining supplemental blades are each 6 point blades, the mold is capable of pro ducing also 30, 36, 42 and 48 point type, as the notches 35 indicate.
The spring detent '36 is pivoted. to the large type block 22 at 38 and has a tooth suitably designed to enter one of the notches 35 and. hold the slide 27in adjusted position. A spring 39 serves, as isobvious, yieldably to maintain the tooth in the notch selected. A handle 40 is provided for moving the detent out of engagement with the notched slide so that the latter may be manually po' sitioned. The detent is also provided with a stop projection 41 (Fig. 3) for engaging with the under side'of the slide to prevent undue movement of the detent, such, for example, as might bring it into the path of the movement of the cross block 13.
It will be observed that the type formed when only the main blade is operated may be ordinary type while all of the larger sizes are provided with a 12 point body 45 and 46 (Figsj8 and 9) and an overhanging face carrying platform such as that indicated in Figs. 8 and '9 by the characters 47 and 47 respectively, the extent of overhang depend-' ing' upon the number of supplemental blades operated in conjunction with the main blade.
Since the bottom of the overhangingplatform bearing the type face is cast on the top of the portion 18' of the small type block, which portion is low quad high, the thick ness of the platform proper is equal to'the difl'erencebetween the type shoulder high and'the low quad high measurements. Low quads will, therefore, suitably support the platform when the type isplaced in a form for printing, stereotyping and the like. I
When the blades are assembled the mold blade shoe'42 secured to the large type block 22 by screws 42 and the mold'blade shoe 43 secured to the s uarin block'lZ by screws has W s 6}. me a tioned to guide and protect said. blades. hen the slidemember 27 is adjusted so thatthe' lever 30 engages with the last of the series of supplemental blades, the lockin'g projectionfi is of course. unnecessary and a recess 44, shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 5, is provided'in the shoe/13m receive it under such conditions. A portion of the projection 34" may extend into said recess also when other portions thereof are locking one or more blades near the end of the'series, this being the case because the projection 34 may for strengthening purposes be wider, than the point size of the supplemental blades. 'It will be understood that various modifications may be madein the mold structure,
including the blades and their arrangement and the'means for controlling and locking them without departingfromj the spirit and scope of the invention asset forth by the claims.
